Would 007 Drive This? Toyota SR 2000 Concept: Is It A Stud Or Dud?
The TOYOTA 2000 SR concept is a tribute to the mythic TOYOTA 2000 GT, considered the first ’Japanese Supercar’ as it revolutionized the way that Japanese car manufacturers were viewed in regards to their skill. In its production, Toyota proved to be one of the Japanese most ambitious companies.

As we all know, TOYOTA has settled worldwide as being the top selling company, despite not having a strong and visible history behind. We consider that it was time to show a Concept that benefits the heritage of the TOYOTA 2000GT, the first Japanese model that could rival European and American SportsCars.

The SR shows an example of SURE DESIGN's capabilities applied to a high performance sports car with an understated look, geared towards a future concept of sustainability and adaptation to its environment.

With a two-seater hybrid coupe in mind, light and sensible, the SR offers a solution that balances the exciting shape of a sports car with good taste, coherent aesthetics and advanced technology. Its characteristic expression, unique and unmistakable, comes from its pure form, with a delicate smoothness to its surfaces and lines of great character that results in a sophisticated automobile, with an athletic styling. Clean, agile and elegant.

With the impressive TOYOTA 2000 GT in mind, the new SR silhouette is defined by its expansive bonnet, which houses the engines.

The wrap-around cockpit and wheel arches sit on voluminous sides, which give it a robust aspect. An almost technical appearance is integrated in the compact, fluid and aerodynamic body. The roof falls off abruptly and the rear of the car, shortened to improve aerodynamic efficiency, ends with a single piece. The wheel rims, light and technical, seem to move even when stationary.

The body, which is composed of a scarcity of pieces, highlights its uniquely styled doors which provide access to the passenger area and boot, glass surfaces are kept to a minimum with weight saving in mind.

The SR is propelled by a hybrid engine: A 3.5-liter V6 turbo front mid-engine position has been adopted, that boots up to 610 horsepower. It is designed to run on bio fuels with rear wheel transmission on circuits and race tracks, with the characteristics and behaviour that of a high-end super sports car. The second front-mounted electric motor would be capable of independently driving the front wheels which would move the SR around cities or countryside in pollution free mode, at moderate speeds and absolute silence.

PS. This car is a styling exercise, and not meant to be in production.

Editors note: You know this car really strikes me as almost Bondish in a way. Now we all know the 007 drives only decidedly British cars as of late. But what if by chance in a reflection of the world market, he chose this as and upcoming ride? It is a little known fact he has used the S2000 in the past before.

A Blast From The Past 007's GT 2000

Can anyone think of a better marketing coup for Toyota than to be the new feature car for James Bond the worlds ultimate spy.

Yes, it is an interesting ride, but if a Toyota ever became a Bond car, the James Bond film empire would be crushed.

They've painted themselves as low cost, high quality, bland cars. And it works for them. They shouldn't try to be something else.

Misinformed? 004 got it right. Toyota hasnt made an attractive car since the supra. Just look at Lexus' lineup. And the Supra is only attractive without the wing.

This concept is hideous.

i can't find any information about an OFFICIAL stingray designation, but this one lists 1963-1980 vettes as stingrays.

as well, i think they were saying the 2000sr was copying the vette, not that the 2000gt copying the vette.

It has the looks but it's a dud because it's a hybrid. Much shoulder room is sacrificed for doors that protrude to the side -- If I'm wrong about that then the car is too wide overall.

interesting. i like it a million times better than that bologna lexus super car THING. this car has some styling quirks to be smoothed out, but i think as a styling exercise, it's a hit. i hope to see a TOYOTA badged sports car in honor of the supra/2000gt rather than the stupid lexus "supercar".

yes, i do see stingray in this car. but hell, if gm is too stupid to utilize it more than they are, kudos to toyota for recognizing a beautiful flowing design.

Looks clean, smooth and dynamic (and futuristic), but I'm still not very fond of the design. Despite the aforementioned qualities, it does look a little "tame" still.

Dud, I like the fact that they used a lot of flowing lines and bulges however, the way the entire project was excecuted is just plain sloppy.

Eh, you don't need lots of money to design nice looking cars, most of the worlds best looking cars come from lower volume manufacturers.

Nice design and car! I hope it is a hybrid that delivers the performance! Whoever thinks hybrids are useless and don't have the capability to compete in performance, need to refresh their thoughts from an archaic thinking mind set. This is exactly what I was talking about in the other thread that up until now cars lack in more than 1 criteria and something like this is a step in the right direction! Too bad the rate of growth was slow, up until now. In this case, kudos to Toyota for being a pioneer in hybrid performance.

looks like a cross between a 2000GT and a Miura... def not as pretty as a Miura, but there are some details leaning there. But yea there is a lot of 2000 GT in a futuristic way... they should keep going w/ it. Once it got toned down it may look quite nice.

Just in case if everyone didn't know... This design is not even final! So, it doesn't even logically make any sense to criticize it to the death from the way it looks. The important thing is the innovation in technology which, unlike the overall *look*, will probably not change that much if it makes it to production. And it will only get better.

I thin it is a "stud" in terms of design. The shape is very distinctive and elegant. But it's the details, such as the headlamps (or lack thereof) that keep it from being a Bond-like car.

Sorry but to me this car has the same issue the LF-A has, the design is too out of this world & creative.

Give me something a little more traditional & not so excessively modern that it's tacky, like those concrete houses that look so futuristic they're out of place in the neighborhood, emotionless, & cold.

Dud.

The LF-A is a beautiful concept (to me it looks exotic). I heard Lexus are taking their time testing the mule version, and soon going to put the final version on the market. When they do, I wouldn't mine owning one =) Reminds me so much of the TT(MKIV_2JZ-GTE)Supra... Oh how I wish toyota would bring it back.

BTW... everyone have their own taste and cup of tea.
Toyota and Lexus just happens to be mines. BMW and Mercedes are ok to me if I want a V12 or V10, of course I go buy an AMG or M... but V8 or V6, I stick with Toyota;Nissan or Lexus; G37 Skyline.

"LE34" 1st of all the Germans wouldn't make something that looked like this, they're more traditional with there styling which is why I've grown up liking German cars over Japanese cars. So yes it's another Japanese concept that I don't like.

That said I personally haven't liked any of BMW's concepts over the past 10 years, I love their cars but hate their concepts. The only BMW concepts I like are the ones that are basically the upcoming production models (X6, Z4 Coupe, & I don't think the CS is to bad).

As a design study, it works rather well:

- The side profile is exotic and aggressive.

- The front is clean a purposeful.

- The rear looks a bit unfinished though.

Verdict - Pseudo Stud
