Would You Buy A Hummer If It Looked Like This?
Scheduled for introduction at the 2008 North American International Auto Show, the HUMMER HX concept reflects the innovative minds of three new GM designers - David Rojas, Min Young Kang and Robert Jablonski - whose first assignment was to provide a vision for the future design of off-road vehicles.

Fresh out of the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Mich., the designers' first test in GM was to design a fun, nimble and innovative HUMMER concept.

"HUMMER appeals to young people globally and served as a perfect first assignment for our newest talent," said Ed Welburn, vice president of global design and product planning. "Today's graduates from top design schools are ready to hit the ground running. The HUMMER design challenge gave our newest designers an opportunity to sprint."

The task presented numerous challenges to the new designers, from creating a vehicle for a brand known around the globe for its iconic design, to ensuring the model would live up to the market's expectation of HUMMER off-road capability.

To help ensure designs were true to the HUMMER brand, these designers were given limited design direction by Carl Zipfel, an ex-professional motocross racer and director of the HUMMER design studio.

"Carl definitely set the tone," said Rojas. "While he gave us creative liberty and challenged us to develop innovative ideas, he also defined three HUMMER proportions – wheelbase, approach and departure angles, and stance – and assigned one to each of us. It gave us a chance to collaborate, but also take our own direction."

While sketching and sculpting together in the HUMMER studio, these recent graduates drew upon the creative energy of each other, further improving their individual designs, as well as that of the final concept.

"We drew inspiration from one another," said Kang. "As you're designing and sketching you try to absorb what the other designer is doing and try to make it better."

David, Min Young and Robert's collaboration inspired the HUMMER HX concept, which presents extraordinary efficiency without sacrificing the unique essence of the HUMMER brand, the world's most capable off-road vehicles.

"While we took inspiration from the HUMMER heritage and DNA, we each wanted to evolve it in a new way," said Jablonski. "We agreed it should be contemporary, compact and definitely open air. It came out great."

After three months of sketching and sculpting theme work for the new HUMMER concept, each designer had the opportunity to present scale clay models to Bob Lutz, GM vice chairman and Ed Welburn, who chose which design would ultimately become the HX concept.

In its final concept form, the E-85 FlexFuel capable HUMMER HX embodies the off road spirit of HUMMER in a fully customizable package. The HX offers an open-air driving experience via a pair of removable roof panels above the driver and front passenger and a modular, removable rear roof assembly enabling a quick conversion from closed vehicle to open vehicle SUT. It also features a slant back assembly with removable doors and fender flairs.

"Working as a team, you realize it's more than one person influencing the vehicle," said Rojas. "You can see the inspiration from each of our designs in the final concept vehicle. We're all proud to have the chance to see our sketches become reality."

things are getting better for hummer i think because of gm pulling out new people and letting them create a suv right in the begining. adding inovative things for example: "The HX offers an open-air driving experience via a pair of removable roof panels above the driver and front passenger and a modular, removable rear roof assembly enabling a quick conversion from closed vehicle to open vehicle SUT. It also features a slant back assembly with removable doors and fender flairs."

i was moved by the fact that it plans to use e-85 fuel. that is probably a stone that was left unturned when the h2 was freshened for '08.

gm has really turned it around these past few years.they are making better cars (e.i. the 10best winner Malibu, New G8,) but also advancing in tech. like e-85 fuel, on-star, and hybrid, and the volt.

i would ost certainly buy a hummer like that.

way to go gm. Lutz, you must be proud!

E-85 is not a good thing - worse mpg (in a Hummer???), drives up food prices, destroys the rainforests and trees that have been around for decades...not a good thing.

I would only buy this if my girlfriend had a name like Barbie or Cindi "with an I" and mine was something like Billy Bob or Butch.

Then and only then will this silly Kidmobile fit into my lifestyle choice of Transportation.

This Vehicle Design is only fit for McDonalds & Burger King Kids Meal Toys and not on Roads as actuall Vehicles that are Driven.

"we all have our own views on things."

But sometimes, views are simply not rational or justified.

What makes you think E85 is practical to use in the long term? It's not even practical to use in the short term.

E85 is a just another hype; it takes a lot of oil to produce them. Besides, it's not available in most part of the U.S. anyway. All those money associated with the marketing of E85 should be be used to develop better form of hybrids, such as diesel+electric powered vehicles.

hummer is a great company with lots of potential. but its stupid. too expensive. this suv looks like a peice of crap. Land rover is better!! land rover has more quality craftmanship a gm could NEVER have. Landrover is the best!

I'm with you fastonekiller, at least the H1, the real Hummer (as opposed to GM's failed clones), has a proper 4WD system. I hope the government auctions off to the civilian market any surplus HUMVEES that are eventually left over from the Iraq war. They should exempt these surplus military velicles from safety and emissions standards.

That's just great, Hummer's attempt to make a Bronco, woo hoo...and it runs on E-85(which is good) but can anyone tell me where you can by it? Thought not. Truth be told, 99% of these will never see a gravel drive way, much less off road action. So, as much of a waste of money that it will be(like the H2 & H3) people will buy it, and buy a lot of them , because just like the H2 it'll look good with 24's, but that'll be about all it will be good at.

The LR3 is at least a great family car/grocery getter. Land Rover knows people don't buy it to go off roading. The Hummers, on the other hand, serve no particular purpose.

S4 - you just contridicted yourself...both are off road capable...yet you admit that no one takes their LR3's off road (probably 3% of all buyers). Yet Hummers serve no purpose? They feed peoples egos the same way LR's do. Just a different type of customer, that's all.

No, I didn't contradict myself at all.

I'll say it again: LR2 is a great family car. It has all the space anyone would want. It's also off-road capable, but Land Rover knows most buyers don't take it off road. People don't buy it to feed their egos... they buy it because they have kids, but want something nicer than a Suburban.

On the other hand, the H2 has a cramped interior and is impractical, but it's a good off roader, right? Well, nobody takes it off roading, so like I said, it serves no purpose. And today, it's frowned upon, rather than admired.

1. No, I wouldn't buy any car that looked this ugly.
2. No, I wouldn't buy a car(SUV) that gets 14mpg if its lucky.
3. No, I wouldn't buy an H2, H3, HX, ...H100, H101...Only H1
4. No, SUVs are not my cup of tea, let alone a Hummer. Would get a G Wagon.

I wouldn't buy a Hummer if it looked like anything. I hate that company. How can GM sit there and pretend to be green with their "great" E85 and "fuel efficient" hybrids, when they have the Hummer H2 sitting there, which is so inefficient that it wasn't even rated by the EPA?

it looks alright, but looks are not the problem for Hummers. The problem is that they are oversized, ostentatious, gas hogs, with very little real utility. Throw in the new hybrid engine, and then they'll at least have one good thing to talk about. (and I agree with Rupert about the E85. I think more and more people are waking up to this myth, even as more and more mfrs jump on the bandwagon-even my beloved Toyota.)

Hybrids don't work in big, heavy trucks.

What is there to understand about that? It would get 2MPG better at best.

I dont think I'm making a huge stretch to say that the GM two-mode hybrid works pretty well in the full size SUVs, not having drven one myself. I do believe GM has the ability to make eco-friendly cars (EV-1), and I am giving them the hugest benefit of the doubt that this thing really delivers, albeit at a large price increase. EPA mileage is screwy, so time will tell if the new system delivers in full sized SUVs (eg, I dont believe for a second that cars like the Corvette get the EPA mileage, if they are driven the way they are intended.) But if it works, then I hope GM transfers the technology to these Hummer beasts.

It's too bad hummer AM decided to merge with GM back in 1999 but worse than the demise of the Denali and Yukon competition, was the decision for hummer to not redesign the h1 Alpha but bring in the h2 in 2002. A demise for a great name that was not misused before 2002. Hummer, (a true mans car) long gone thanks to the new suburban wives club.

There is NOTHING special about this concept. The made it a 2 door instead of 4, slightly narrowed the front end and made its signal lights look like those of the Toyota FJ Cruiser, then put even bigger tires on it.

So, the article has so much brag about the concept when there is nothing special about it. Just the usual old empty words coming out of the "big" 3 sadly.

Well Hummer is not for everyone. No car IS for everyone. Hummer is a fine product and the H1 was a life saver in the Military! Literally point in anywhere and it will go! Civilian version more of the same with more luxury. The H2 is a revised Tahoe with more ability which makes it heavier and burns more MPG. The majority of H2s are pavement pounding status symbol GM will make improvements to curb the critizism of MPG and better the Hummer image.

The H3 is surprisingly nice. A girl I am dating has one and loves it. I am surprised it took this long for Hummer to come out with a Wrangler competitor. I believe the H1 can be purchased by order only.

I guess all of the GM haters are here to put in their 2 cents...lol.

I would buy an H1 Alpha in a heartbeat! This forums is mainly car people, no SUV or truck people on here. Being a huge Jeep wrangler fan, Hummer and Jeep go at it quite a bit. Even though I am a big Jeep fan, even they have sacrificed quality.
For a school project, I designed my own Hummer and everyone in the calss loved it. I was thinking about sending the idea over to Hummer, but they would probably laugh at me. My idea would change Hummer for the better.
