Wow! Lexus IS-F in Action At Nurburgring
For those of you that quickly discount the words "performance" and "Lexus" in the same sentence, better watch this short video.

I'm telling you right here that the IS-F may be more on the mark than you think, just watch it literally fly down the straight at Nurburgring.

A special thanks to Troy for the tip.

What impression am I supposed to take from this? I don't doubt that the IS-F will be a very fast little sedan, but this was just a video of the car going straight at high speeds, with no handling involved... M3, RS4, C AMG, etc. (or even any other stable luxury car) could go that fast in a straight line.

Just about to say that. Theres really nothing special about a sports sedan that can drive straight a relatively fast, its the ability to take corners stable and at a high speed that sets certain sports sedans apart.

HAHAHAHA.... And that is going to show us what? That a car can drive fast on the Nordsleife (the Nürburgring is an F1-track). Wow, I really didn't know that! Anyone ever been there? It's an awesome track, but any one who have actually been there (and probably most who haven't) will confirm that this shows nothing. I'm sure the IS-F will be fast, but this definately isn't the proof... It was hard just making out that it was the IS-F at all... Had to watch it three times before I could see that it was an IS at all...

BTW: I hope all that plastic on the engine will disappear in the production model! What good is it to have a performance V8 if you can't show it off?!

I've been there multiple times. It's a huge and scary track but after about a 150 laps you are starting to know you way around it.

+3 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Haha.. Yes, it is pretty scary... My brother took me for a "little spin" in the Karrousel in an M6 once... Now that was scary, he had to have it transported home on a flatbed because of a ruined 19" rim (not something he was particularly proud off) which is pretty expensive when you live in Copenhagen (1400 km)!
I've also blown the tranny in my souped up Nissan Sunny GTI-R once spewing a gallon or two of tranny fluid out over the tarmac just before the bridge (wasn't very popular afterwards)!

150 laps? hopefully in something a bit more nimble than an A8 then ;)

I haven't driven 150 laps on it Sailor! :) It was a statement from the locals there.

Personally I reckon I've done the track about 40 times and still it scares the crap out of me. Last time in the A8 I was being overtaken by small VW Golfs at over 200 kmh... in a track that is THAT wide! But the most impressive thing has to be the ring taxi. (E60 M5 with Sabine wheels) She is one talented driver.

Lets hope for no wagon versions of the IS. The last one IMO was really not needed, a coupe would have done much better. Anyway this vid isnt really appealing. We knoe the IS-F will be fast, but how about showing us some tire screeching and maybe a little drift out the corners.

Ok, the IS-F with no doubt will be fast, the movie doesn't explain anything really. But, for the IS-F to truly rule in speed and performance, first thing it needs to have more horse power than the M3 from its bigger engine V8. The M3 with a 4.0 V8 is making 420 hps, the IS-F with its 5.0 V8 it better make more than 450hps.
And as far as handling, they better tune up the suspension for a true sporty feeling, otherwise it won't beat the M3 in performance and speed.

Of course, with no doubt it will beat the M3 in other areas, quality, design, reliability and price, but as a sport sedan, it does need the true sporty performance.

You mean no doubt it will beat the M3 in all the boring stuff? I'm not so sure of that... Performance engines is a completely different ball park! And I can not stress enough that BMW is among the best in mechanical reliability! The reliability reports people keep refering to even says that. It is their quality that haven't been up to par for a few years, but they claim that they've improved greatly in these areas as well.

As to the performance; it better have 450 hp+ with that big an engine, anything else would be pathetic! But the real test will be the weight of the thing! It can have all the power in the world, but if it weighs the world as well, it won't matter... Weight matters far more than horsepower!

Lexus says the IS-F will have "400+" horsepower. Usually, a "+" doesn't denote 50 horsepower. I'd be surprised if it had over 420.

That was really fast, I wonder how fast can it goes from 0-60? probably mid 4.4-4.7 seconds range. I guess we have to wait for the test result to come out, than we know how it is.

And I wonder if people could stop wondering long enough for the bloody thing to be released! We don't even know when Lexus plans on selling them or how much power it will pack! How can people possibly estimate anything without even the most basic of information?!

You mean like that LS460L "pre production car" that couldn't brake a few months back?

Yup... They are among the best in engine reliability, but if you take a completely new engine and then thrashes the hell out of it, overheating is very possible... It actually just goes to show that the engine is very well tuned... Had they broken it in, it wouldn't have overheated (but don't tell anyone, because it will ruin your argument). But people who have never owned a new car (or any car for that matter) wouldn't know that... So I won't blame you for your attempt at taking a punch at me!

Why don't you try throwing an brand spanking new IS350 around a track and see what happens to it?

Anyway, it isn't my claim... Try reading the text which accompanies the reliability reports (if you can - Now see, this is making fun of you) and it clearly states that BMW's problem is quality control not reliability, so some trimming might come loose, but the car will keep rolling. And I have yet to see a Lexus with 4-500.000 km on the clock... I've seen lots and lots of Benzes and BMWs which have done 400k+... So until those start showing up, don't come here and talk about reliability!

RupertRupert - 5/21/2007 7:18:33 PMView My AgentSpace
+6 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Overheating has nothing to do with engine reliability, they probably didn't even warm up the car, just took it out cold. Overheating requires a top up of coolant, no big deal.

Sailor, it's not even the interior parts that are faulty- BMW's are excellently built. Very solid cars. It's just things like the navigation system glitching or the A/C not working one day, etc...

I've never owned one, but I plan on it eventually, and I'll give a reliability report. I can say that my Audis have been very reliable. No mechanical problems of any kind.

Lexus ALWAYS understates their 0 - 60 times by at least .5 seconds. Here are the results of the 5 Top Luxury Cars in this test which was reported in the January Issue of Car and Driver. Please note these tests were all done on the same day at about the same time and at the same altitude. The results reflect the average of 3 runs and all cars are the 2007 vintage.

Mercedes S550 5.6, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.1 (Benz show 5.4 in their specs)
BMW 750iL 5.7, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.2
Jag XJ Super 6.0 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.5
Lexus LS460L 6.2 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.6
Audi A8 6.8 0 - 60 quarter mile 15.2

Note that Lexus, as usual, is more than the 5.4 the manufacturer CLAIMS to get by .8 seconds.

Also note the LS430 (prior model the LS460 replaced) was rated at 295 HP and was actually 278 when Lexus corrected their rating. And there were no refunds or apologies from the so-called "quality" car company. ABC - Always Be Careful what you buy from the Lexus people.....
