YAWN: Porsche Officially Shows Facelifted 911
Here are the official photos of the new Porsche 911 facelift.

Aside from the new transmission offering and mild styling updates this facelift is a real yawner....but you be the judge.

Are you excited or disappointed?

Official release text:

Porsche has continued its tradition of only implementing minimal changes to the styling of its iconic 911 range for the latest 2009 model year facelift, but the changes taking place under the new sheet metal are quite the opposite. This is because the new 911 Carrera is available for the first time with direct injection and dual clutch technologies.
The first cars to receive the updates are the Carrera and Carrera S models, both of which are now available with Porsche’s newly developed Doppel Kupplung (dual clutch) gearbox complete with seven forward gears.

Porsche has already applied direct injection technology to the 4.8L V8 Cayenne SUV but implementing the technology in the flat-six of the Carrera models has been a more daunting task - although the payoff of greater power, torque, fuel-efficiency and emissions ratings was an enticing incentive for Porsche.

Engineers have increased the size of the combustion chambers, upgraded the crankshaft and installed new oil and water pumps in order to implement the direct injection technology, raising the redline to 7,500 rpm, 200rpm higher than the non-direct-injection flat-six.

The 3.8L flat-six gets a significant improvement in horsepower thanks to the technology, with power rising from 350hp to 380hp and torque climbing from 295lb-ft at 4,600rpm to 310lb-ft at 4,400 rpm. According to Porsche, the updated Carrera S with direct injection and the new seven-speed dual clutch transmission should hit the 60mph mark in 4.3 seconds, an improvement of around four-tenths of a second over the current model.

While more horsepower is always welcome, consumers these days want to see fuel efficiency improve and Porsche doesn’t disappoint in this area either. The 3.8L 911 Carrera S with dual-clutch transmission consumes up to 12.8% less fuel and emits around 14.5% less carbon-dioxide than its predecessor, while the 3.6L 911 Carrera experiences similar gains. The combination of greater efficiency due to direct injection and minimal loss of power thanks to the dual clutch transmission allow the two sports cars to achieve these significant gains.

A new butterfly valve has also been adopted in the 3.8L, opening at around 5,100rpm to really allow the Porsche’s bark to match its bite, although the 3.6L in the base Carrera doesn’t get this treatment.

Changes to the 911’s exterior consist of new LED taillights, slightly revised bumpers with daytime running lights and new 18 and 19in wheels. The rest of the 911 fleet, including the Carrera 4S and Turbo, are expected to adopt the same changes in the coming year.

I am sure the title will fire people up, but I say a bad decision to make.

I think official press releases should be treated with an amount of neutrality.

Anyway, about this 'new' Porsche -Why mess with a formula that works?

I mean bear in mind this is a mid-cycle refresh meant to distinguish the cars fitted with all this new technology, it isn't a new model.

Was it 'YAWN' when BMW face-lifted the 5-series by changing the bumper grille?

"Was it 'YAWN' when BMW face-lifted the 5-series by changing the bumper grille?"

Actually, no; it was a revolution in automotive design.

But in all seriousness, I agree with everything you said. Since when have mid-cycle refreshes been dramatic overhauls? You should expect minimal changes to begin with.

The changes here are incredible, in fact. Nice power bump and the new transmission looks awesome.

The skin is still gorgeous and I wouldn't have it any other way!

Porsche has the highest initial quality right now for a reason, people.. and other car company's should follow in their footsteps if they want to improve their quality. I admire Porshe's M.O.

I agree with all of you. The 911 is just getting closer and closer to automotive perfection; all it needs now is a useful rear seat. Since Porsche engineers seem to defy physics they could probably reconfigure the interior to make it happen.

Have you forgotten the air-cooled to liquid-cooled change that polarized 911 owners? Evidently, some felt that a Real 911(TM) had to be air cooled. And then there wss the total make-over a few years back that transformed the 911 from a tail-happy car to one that was much more balanced.

The 911 is true to form. It's an archetype that is, and always has been, instantly recognizable. I'm not a 911 fan myself, but I do recognize it as a world-class sports car.

The car is still a marvel in terms of functionality. The styling I'm not too sure about although I still like it. I don't love it. They should have just left the tail lights alone and perhaps offer some different wheels. Not much change was needed. It's a good car.

Porsche's quoted performance numbers are always very conservative - I'd expect when the magazines start testing the PDK equipped car, the Carrera S will have a 0-60 time of 4 secs or even in the high 3's. The new interior looks great though I'm still not sure why they didn't go to paddle shifters behind the wheel (not shown in the few thumbnail pictures on this site). And Agent 001, your comment is a YAWN - this is a great improvement - the interior is even more gorgeous and simplified, more hp and better fuel economy, more performance, etc. And BTW, the car is posh, but it's not a Posche 911

Why? It's a mid-cycle refresh. The Lexus GS only got a new bumper, new rims and the de-tuned 460 engine for its mid-cycle.

A 911 with a dual clutch transmission and a power bump would never be a yawner.

The styling is just about perfect. A great mixture of past (still unmistakably a 911 after 40+ years), with enough modern styling cues to make it contemporary. One thing great about the 911 is that it never looks dated. I see 70's Carreras on the road and it still looks cool.

The icing is the fact that this is probably the most fuel efficient supercar out there.

Every Porsche needs 50-100 more horsepower. The chasis in the Boxster/Cayman and the 911 (which are perfect) are being wasted. Use small turbos (e.g. 335i style) in the lesser models, bigger turbos in the higher end 911s, use high reving NA engines in the GT3. I don't care how they do it, but they need to get it done... I won't be able to sleep at night knowing my neighbor can smoke me at the track in his Vette for half the price.

Porsches are subtle, which is what makes them great. Why does the corvette have to show off around 911's, because they will never be held in such high regard as a Porsche. The driver who knows what his car will do, and doesn't show boat it holds a much more delicate arrogance than the guy trying to bait you. You let the kids play around you, while you just enjoy your cruise with you and everyone around you knowing you're driving a much more sophisticated piece of automobile. Then when the moment strikes just right, you down shift, kick the revs up, and dance away into the night leaving the corvette wondering what just happened to them.

ZBL is correct. For the money Porsche could give us an extra 50hp with a small turbo and maybe increase efficiency as well. No offense godfather but you sound a little fem with your "delicate arrogance" comment. You sound to be concerned a little what other people think about your car. Who cares. Drive what you want. I love Porches I have owned all incl 911turbo but I chose to buy the new Vette because I liked it and the power. The biggest suprise I got and still have is that I got this feeling of what a great deal I got that I've never really had before. Anyway with the xtra HP now on the 911s I will consider it now. It would be nice to have the rear seat for young (small)kidz

Nice power bump...350 to 380 and the 7 spp dual clutch tranny, very nice indeed.

I think the 911 was due for a decent power increase and some new transmission technology now that you can buy a manual 335 or a G37 that packs 300-330 hp for $30-40k less. Is there any power bump in the 3.6 or is it only the 3.8?

"yawn" all you want...but the 911 is one of the few if only designs that is truely timeless. It still has road presence and it still turns heads even though the design hasn't changed much in over 40 years. A car like this needs to make no apologies for the way it looks...even in this day and age.

The design has been forced on the public? Are you kidding me? What, Porsche forced people to buy their cars when there were other vehicles to buy? "Purchase our vehicles or we will bomb your house!"

If 50 years is not timeless then what is timeless to you? The 911 really looks like a Beetle? Crap, while this whole time I was browsing the GT3 brochure I could buy a vintage Beetle because even people who are into cars can are still stupid enough to mistaken it as a 911? Wow, so that means I can add a bi-plane wing with a small gurney flap and go track day racing and no one will know the difference. Genuis!

But wait, if the 911 is a luxury car how can people mistaken it with a Beetle because that car is very sparse. What a conundrum. Maybe I can convince people that its sparse interior means I have an RS model. Genius!

Do you really think a 911 is a luxury car? Then what is a 5-series or an S-class? Truth be told the 911 may have nice interiors but luxury isn't exactly a word I would use.

I can see why some have adopted the Jeremy Clarkson approach to the 911s styling. It is a facelift is just that - a facelift and not total facial reconstruction. It is expected the car will look the very similar since it is still based off the 996 platform. Since this is a facelift I would bet my all my money the successor to the 997 will be an all-new platform.

The current F430 looks so similar to the 360 minus the lamps and fascia differences yet no one yanwed at the 430 Scuderia. Maybe it was the horsepower and race inspired purpose of the vehicle. Seriously, look at a profile pick of F430 and 360 then you might catch my drift.

This facelift is a large step forward with the added technologies. My gripe about the dual-clutch, I have said before and I will say it again, there are no paddles on the column but shifter buttons on the steering wheel. It looks nice but I just know it isn't as useful as paddles. Atleast you can still use the gear lever to upshift or downshift by applying forward and backward inputs. A missed opportunity if you asked me.

I thought that too, but I saw the demo on Porsche's website and the shift buttons look quite ergonomic and easy to use and blend nicely into the steering wheel. They aren't like the tiptronic steering wheel shift buttons on the 996/997. They are positioned closer to the center of the wheel, larger, and curved to fit your entire thumb when gripping the wheel at 9 & 3.

However, I do agree that changing gears while maneuvering the wheel might be more difficult than with paddles. I think they opted to go for the cleaner daily driver sports car look instead of the track day race car look. To that extent, I think it works. Not sure which I would prefer...I'd have to drive it to decide.

I was just about to say the same. I would have to drive it to see how those buttons work for me. I've never owned a flappy paddle car so I dont even have a comment as to the usefulness of paddles but from the pictures alone, I can tell that the 9&3 driving style might be a little awkward with those buttons there.

Ground breaking Nissan Maxima....I'm sure your kidding. Not to say that the Maxima looks bad but I would hardly call it groundbreaking! As for the 911.The reason why it looks similar today to when it was introduced in 1963 is that people keep buying the dam car!If 911 sales consistently tank you can bet the car's styling would have changed. It is still an amazing car and truly amazing how it has been updated for all these yrs to not only compete with today's best sportscars but to better them in many ways. The GTR does have the legs on the 911 but it is not an attractive car inside or out and it needs awd and twin turbos to do it.A 911 is a quality car with a quality engine. It's handling still fights off the laws of physics. The improvements to the Boxster Cayman are next.Porsche is still the standard barer to whom all sports cars need to be judged.

Porsche 911 styling has always been evolutionary, as you can still see the 1965 911 in the styling. How many other cars look like the 911 or have the engine mounted behind the rear wheels? A 911 with 355 HP ca run with any car with 420+ HP. The new Dual Clutch gearbox ( a Porsche invention 25 years ago btw) along with direct injection is going to be a treat indeed!
