Your Friend Wants To Buy A Porsche Turbo, Audi R8, Corvette Z06 Or A Nissan GT-R. YOU Make The Call!
As I sat down for dinner the other night with a good friend of mine, our conversation turned to cars as soon as the pleasantries were over.  Like myself, my friend is an avid car guy having an impressive collection of cars.

Current autos occupying his garage include a BMW M5, M3 convertible, Cadillac STS V-Spec and his latest acquisition from earlier this year, a Dodge Viper SRT-10.

As the conversation went on, he said to me, “JJ, I really want a GT-R, I think I am going to buy one this weekend.”

I told him I thought that would be great, but asked what other cars (If any) had he considered in making this decision.  I was actually surprised to find out he had already test driven a 911 Turbo, a Corvette Z06 along with an Audi R8.

Honestly my jaw dropped with the R8.  As I have driven every car he currently owns, the prospect of driving the GT-R obviously excites me, but the R8 – now that would be fun.

So over dinner the debate over the GT-R versus the other options he gave ensued, and although I tried to change his mind, he seems resolved to buy the GT-R.

Sounds like a AutoSpies.com story in the making…

The question is, do you think my friend is making the right choice, and if it were your friend, what car would you choose for him, or at least try to persuade him to buy?

As good a car as the GT-R is, it would rank third on the list with the R8 (with manual transmission) taking the first slot, the 911 Turbo coming in second, the GT-R in third place and the Corvette Z06 bringing up the rear.

The Audi R8 is a phenomenal car, and one that you won’t pass yourself in on a frequent basis.  The combination of exotic styling with Audi reliability coupled with a serious dose of go fast hardware, if it was my money with these choices, the R8 wins in my book.

Now you’ve heard my list and ranking, how would your list stack up?  Have some fun, and tell us WHY you would rank the choices in the order you have chosen.  I know my friend reads AutoSpies.com, perhaps your friend does as well and will take into consideration your choices.

The other option doesn't belong on the list.
As I am a little reluctant with the GT-R but haven't driven it. And I know that it would not be fair to place it behind the others until I do, however my choices are based on appeal (which is subjective).

Angry maybe, but he's right.

If it's my money, R8 because it's unique. The Porsche looks no different than last years or 8 years ago.

I have an R8 so i'm biased that German engineering and Audi's handsome and well built interiors win my vote. I have sat in a GT-R before as my aquaintance has one and I will take it for a spin around the block this weekend. From initial impression the GT-R is cool and the most aggressively styled Nissan(Infiniti) in their current lineup. What bugged me the most was the cheap plastic bits. It's already hard enough to convince someone to buy the car for that price as it is but you would think they would put in better quality plastics. Beats me, functionality wise it's a marvel. Curb appeal and quality seems a little dull to me. My acquaintance also owns a 911 Turbo and that is still first and foremost his pride and joy despite the numerical differences between the GT-R and the Turbo.

I respect all the cars that 007 has brought up in this topic but my favorite are the R8 and the 911 Turbo. If the GT-R fixed those minor details perhaps it wouldn't be such a pet peeve. For a car that has a premium that goes well above $100K CAD I expect a lot. If it doesn't have satisfactory parts, it's still just a Nissan, and in my opinion it's not worth it (no matter how fast it is).

LOL Deboost all you want gentlemen but in the end of the day all I know is I've experienced it myself so my views are based on something real, not just what I read on reviews or watch on videos. It's not like I said the GT-R is pure crap. You guys can't accept the fact the GT-R's got cheap plastic then you're very naive. That's a FACT. Oh well, it's the first time North America's ever had the GT-R on this side of the water. I can't blame you guys for envy and the hype for the car.

The R8 is sold out for 2008 and 2009, so that leaves the 911 Turbo and the GT-R. The 911 Turbo has noticeable turbo lag, the GT-R doesn't.

Name the 142 car between the R8 and the Vette.
People need to respect what GM has done with both the Zo6 and the ZR1.
These cars are world class! Maybe not top three but close.

What about the Aston Martin V8 Vantage and Maserati GranTurismo? Same price bracket and a whole lot better looking than anything on this list at the moment (R8 isn't too shabby though).

But if its only out of these 4:
1)911 Turbo (too fast and refined to be ignored)
2)R8 (beautiful and civilized)
3)GTR (a feat of engineering, a little too crude for me)
4)Z06 (waaay last, would never live with that interior)

Looking at the stable, caddy V spec M5, M3 vert, Viper, the GTR would be a nice addition. Unless there was some to need to have the ultimate US sport car collection, no need for a Vette and Viper. The Porsche and R8 nice and smooth in their own right but thats a bit too much kraut going on with the Bimmers too. Ahhhh the GTR, there you go, the lastest in Japanese tech that will be fun to add some tuning packages to as I cant imagine this guy being too warranty sensitive. There ya go! The GTR is a technically brilliant vehicle. If you're only caught up in out right performance stats then this is the car to get. But many have said it is too technical, the engine is not as vocal as an R8 or the Porsche Turbo. Also the interior does not speak of a sportscar, rather a typical Japanese sedan with a few more gadgits. The exterior is agressive but you really have to like the "Origamy" styling. Further do you prefer a manual tranny or autoshift. From a personal point of view I feel the styling of both the Porsche turbo and Audi R8 are more flowing. Their engines are more vocal, they have manual trannys which I prefer. Frankly their limits of acceleration and handling are more then adequate for me and their interiors speak sportscars. So the GTR is relagated to 3rd place on my list. It's price is less(only if you can get it-although I just heard they raised it by 10 grand). Between the Porsche and the Audi-I'm not a fan of turbo's as much as normally aspirated. If the GT3 were in the pick I would have probably gone with that. But otherwise it has to be the R8. Handling wise it up there with the GTR.

Yeah, I guess the fact that they are a lot easier and compact is crap, as well as the fact it allows more available space, and gives more power and better airflow for the engine. The fact that it doesn't need a complex turbo or a supercharger probably makes it crap as well.

And thats crap? Please explain. How come it still works? Just because something is dated its crap? Their engines are very popular for modifications and even used in porsche 914s. And the last time I checked, tractors were using diesel engines. Are they considered crap? Thats like saying porsche should change their shape of their iconic 911, and it hasn't changed for sometime.

The 911 Turbo doesn't have anything close to the same curb appeal as the R8, nor the shock value of the GT-R. If you said, "I drive a Nissan," and then showed up in THAT, they would be blown away.

The R8 or GT-R are a novelty that already starts to wear off. The 911 Turbo remains much more desirable than a hyped up Audi or Nissan.

Star, you haven't driven any of them. Neither of I, but if the magazines have proven anything at all it's that the R8 is not fleeting. It is an incredible drive and Audi will only continue to improve upon it. It has given Porsche a major wakeup call.

S4,

you cannot assume I didn't drive these cars just because you didn't. I admit that I didn't have the chance yet to drive the R8 but I did drive the GT-R side by side with a base 911 Porsche and a 911 Turbo.
The GT-R looks cheap even in comparison with the base 911. It is not an impressive looking car and unfortunately the driving experience is not that great either. There is an "industrial" feeling that you get from driving it and aside from the fact that you can pull high Gs on a track, is not much of a drivers car. It ultimately drives like a Nissan.
What do I mean by that?

A BMW, any BMW will drive like a BMW. There might be noticeable differences between the type of BMWs you drive but ultimately they have their unmistakable "print". So it goes for Mercedes cars, Porsche cars, Nissan or Audi cars.
What I mean by that is that the Nissan engineers that built the GT-R didn't abandon the Nissan roots when they built the GT-R. The car is still a Nissan and while that can be considered good by some, when you attempt to compare their product with a product made by a dedicated sports car brand the downsides of Nissan engineering vs let's say Porsche engineering are extremely easy to be noticed.

The GT-R is good in the same way an EVO is good, and I don't mean that in a bad way. I do respect both the EVO and the GT-R but every time I hear people compare the EVO with an RS4 or M3, or the GT-R with a Porsche 911 Turbo I cringe. The EVO and GT-R are good, but not THAT good. If you want a racer car for a budget I can agree that the GT-R could be the best value but if you want the real experience that only a brand that specializes in sports cars can offer then you have to go for a Porsche or similar(Ferrari, Lotus). It is obvious to anybody who test drove these cars that the GT-R was built to pull Gs while the Porsche was built to put a smile on your face. That half a second faster on a track means zero to any amateur driver and I would gladly give up more of those seconds just so I can smile at the wheel of a Porsche instead of pulling Gs in a Nissan.

who is "we", retard? You and your "monkey"? All I see is YOU spreading genital herpes around here with your posts. Always, always coming only to insult others. Like I said before, talk cars or... GTFO!

First, I don't care if someone is impressed with the car that I drive anyway. Hell, all of them depreciate (besides a select few). I love cars, but i bought my cars to satisfy my desires and not others.

He sounds bored. I don't thing another car is going to cure it. Honestly, with all that money, I would have him get into yachts or airplanes. That is, if he isn't there already.

These are all fine cars, but if money were no object this is how I would rank them.

1. Audi R8 - not the fastest car in this group, but the best-handling and best overall car, with beautiful roomy interior and gorgeous exterior. Also the best car to drive off the track.

2. Porsche Turbo - a classic design that just seems to get better with every iteration.

3. Corvette Z06 - a great bang for the buck, and the only one of these with a classic, guttural-sounding, torquey American pushrod V8.

4. Nissan GT-R - I would have ranked it higher than I did, but its cheap interior and "boy racer" looks turned me off.

This is a tough one. Your friend already has a BMW M5, M3 convertible, Cadillac STS V-Spec and Viper. He should try to go Asian now. He has German and American covered. The Caddy has the Vette motor already. To me all three of the cars mentioned are great cars.

Those of you talking bad about the Vette, I saw a Z06 la
