chevy volt to sell for $30k not $48k
Ever since GM opened the doors to its Tech Center in Warren, Michigan, where the 2010 Chevy Volt is being designed, rumors have been swirling about the new Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (E-REV). Originally beset by problems, development has moved ahead rapidly with a test mule hitting the track and word that a production-spec car could appear at this year's Paris Auto Show. And now in another victory, it seems that GM CEO Rick Wagoner has said the plug-in hybrid will not only make its original target price of $30,000, it could even sell for less.

This car sounds great until you see what PML can do, this car is already out dated before it even comes out! Check out PML's site before you deboost me! They converted a mini Cooper to an hybrid electrical car, very impressive!

Impressive for sure, but the equipment that PML used wasn't exactly cheap. Four (4) wheel-hub motors, an ultra-cap bank, a LiIon battery pack, multiple DC-DC converters, and an onboard gen-set.

Greenplease, you are right pml would be expensive if it were a one off, but if it were mass produced it would be priced competitively. Chev has so much money you think they could out do these guys, but unfortunatly not.

at that price, it'll likely have Ni-Hydride batteries.

if they do come with Li-ion, it will be as an extra cost option. UNLESS gm is going to swallow some of the cost just to get a successful launch.

Why? NiMh is no cheaper than LiIon, currently, and the production process to make them doesn't scale as well.

A123 has quoted $0.50/W of capacity, so a 40kW/h battery pack would go for $20,000. That leaves GM with $10,000 to play with for the chasis/interior.

I can guarantee you that the remainder of the drivetrain (genset and electric motor) will cost no more than $1,500.

That leaves $8,500 for the chasis/interior. I'm sure they can pull it off.

Volt is very un-GMiish for taking such risk and bestest hope for'em.

True...I think they are hoping for something much bigger to come out of this in GMs long term future. Definitely a great thing.

Will see when all the dust settles but looks very promising. May get one myself as a short distance commuter. Of course I will hope to pay $30K a year after it comes out and dealerships no longer place markups :) Can't wait!!!

I know this has been said many times before, but this series-hybrid car is revolutionary not for just GM but for the entire car industry. Think of the aftermarket possibilities for providing electricity for the batteries – different types of power plants (Miller cycle, HCCI, micro turbines, pure bio-fuel ICE, fuel cell, hydrogen, etc.), solar cells, Mr. Fusion…

For the techies out there, this is one exciting car.

When this rolls out, GM will have THREE types of hybrids on the road: the mild hybrids for a cheap economy boost, the 2 mode hybrids to improve gas milage on the vehicles that need it (SUVs and trucks), and the series hybrid. The mild is already well established, the 2 mode is trickling down the line into smaller cars (supposedly it will appear on the next Impala and possible the Camaro and G8 since it's designed for high torque rear drive), the 2 mode is going to appear in MB and BMW product soon, and the series will seriously revolutionize hybrid thinking. All toyota has is one system that they make bigger or smaller in relation to the size of the engine and its not very good when attached to larger engines. If GM isn't the Hybrid leader in 5 years, I will be very surprised. Toyota should be worried.
