The British round of World Rally Championship, Wales Rally GB, is in a dire strait. Welsh Assembly Government, the long-time financial backer of the rally, has withdrawn funding for the event this year which is set for the latter part of October. The withdrawal came even when Welsh Assembly has a standing contract to support the rally from 2007 to 2011. Consequently, the organizer of the rally, International Motor Sports, has started legal proceeding against the Welsh Assembly for breach of contract. There are reports coming out that the reason for the withdrawal of support is because Welsh Assembly needs the funds to be able to host the Ryder Cup golf tournament at Celtic Manor in October of next year.
