By next spring, the entire work force (about 4,700 members) of New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) will lose their jobs, according to Nikkei business daily. NUMMI is the joint venture between Toyota Motor Corp. and the former General Motors Corp. in California.

Late last month, Toyota had indicated that it will end output at the California plant it has shared with GM for 25 years. Immediately after making the announcement, it received plenty of criticism from labor and politicians. Production will be halted at the end of March 2010. Reasons cited include the overcapacity of the carmaker’s plant as demand is very low during this recession.
