At the Beijing Auto Show, Hyundai Motor Co. displayed the Verna a.k.a. the successor to its Accent entry sedan. This model features a sloping roof, distinct character lines and Hyundai’s own new generation Gamma gasoline engine with multiport fuel injection.

Hyundai developed this car specifically for the Chinese market. It is slated to go on sale as the Verna later this year. Spokesman Oles Gadacz said that the US market will get a modified version of this car; however, he declined to provide a timeline for the launch. What’s definite is that the subcompact will be redesigned for the 2011 or 2012 model year. Powering the Chinese version is either a 1.4- or 1.6-liter engine. The model is offered with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.
