After more than a year of Tundra owners reporting severe frame rust on their 2000-2003 Tundras, Toyota has quietly launched a limited service campaign to replace rusted 2000-2003 Tundra frames free of charge.

Specifically, this program will replace the entire frame on any 00-03' Tundra that has perforation due to rust, provided that any single instance of rust perforation is 10mm or larger in size (about the size of a marble).

By offering to replace Tundra frames free of charge, Toyota has closed the chapter on trucks with frame rust. Both Tacoma and Tundra frames of the late 90's and early 00's suffered from tremendous rust, and by offering free frame replacements on vehicles far outside of warranty, Toyota has demonstrated a commitment to customer service and quality.

If only Toyota had acted much sooner. According to documents filed with NHTSA, Toyota became aware of frame rust issues in late 2008. Nearly 18 months later, Toyota announces a program to address concerns.

If only Toyota didn't need a year and a half to do the right thing...
