Renault was the lone major automaker that recorded European new-car sales that increased in May. Since scrappage programs had ended that month and the economic conditions remain uncertain, it appears that many shied away from purchasing new cars.

Renault group outperformed Ford Motor Co. to become Europe’s No. 3 carmaker by unit sales. The No. 1 and No. 2 carmakers are Volkswagen and PSA/Peugeot-Citroen, respectively. In a survey of the European market, including EFTA countries down 8.7% to 1.17 million in May, Renault group sales were up 7%, pushed up by a 10% rise for Renault brand. The low-cost Dacia marque fell by 4%.
