According to the latest reports, the next-generation Mazda RX -- dubbed the RX-9 -- is said to get a bit of an upgrade. Rather than be as dependent on fuel, Mazda's preparing some hybrid technology that will make the RX-9 a fuel sipper.

Look for some Li-Ion batteries to make an appearance and keep some electricity streaming to the range extender.

Another big change: the RX-8's innovative rear doors will be axed. With any luck, the next-gen Mazda will take comes cues from the Shinari concept.


The Mazda RX-8 will be replaced – but this time, the super-smooth rotary engine will be much less thirsty, thanks to hybrid technology borrowed from Toyota. And a Mazda source in Japan has confirmed that development of the newcomer – likely to be dubbed RX-9 – is well underway.
