When plenty of manufacturers are turning to electric motors and hybrid technology, Mazda is saying "no way." With its SKYACTIV engines and transmissions, Mazda is going to be propelling itself into the next-generation of automotive innovation.

Besides the Mazda3, the next vehicle to benefit from SKYACTIV tech is the CX-5 small sport-utility vehicle. The great-looking SUV was first seen by the press as the Minagi concept. Eventually it made its way to the 2011 New York Auto Show in style, where it received more positive press.

It looks like Mazda may be onto something.

Now that Mazda has come out and said it will be powered by a 2.2-liter diesel motor that produces 173 horsepower, it has definitely popped up on our radar again. That's great and all but what really matters is if Mazda is thinking about bringing the CX-5 to the States with a diesel powerplant.

This means we've gotta ask:

To diesel or not to diesel? What should Mazda give the CX-5 for the U.S. market?


Look out Landrover! Mazda is set to join the space race in the compact SUV market with a new 4x4 that will take aim at the Freelander.

Based on the Minagi concept car (pictured) the CX-5 will also be Mazda's most advanced and economical models yet. While there are still no official images, the firm has revealed its plans for the engine line-up.

will become a class leader for economy, emissions, and performance – with the 173bhp 2.2-litre diesel version producing less than 120g/km of C02...
