Now although I may know my products, I had never been to a race. Until yesterday.
That's because I ventured out to the 2011 Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park. Being my first race I wasn't sure if I'd have a good time or just become bored after a while. To say the least, I had a blast but today I resemble a lobster. Next time, I'll remember to bring the sun block.
Aside from that, the cool part about the race is getting to understand the racing culture. After the teams run a formation lap, as a last check to see that their respective vehicles are fully functional, the driver's line up and the crowds can walk the grid and see the cars up close. It's an incredible opportunity to see these racers and peek at the Spartan interiors.
In the stands, the beer is flowing, hot dogs are abound and the smell of brakes and rubber fills the air. Heading back into the paddocks after the race you see amazing, stripped race cars being taken apart and examined.
With that said, I've already marked it off on my calendar -- I'll be in Baltimore during Labor Day weekend for that ALMS round. Considering it'll be running through the city and the Inner Harbor, I bet it'll make for some excellent shots and a competitive race.
