An ongoing rumor for the past year or so has been that Porsche will build a Panamera coupe. Oh-kay, now what?
We have spotted any testing nor has there been any confirmations. Just a lot of hubbub and word from "sources."
Well, it seems that the rumormill continues, thanks to Autocar. According to the British publication, it looks like the 928, which may be dubbed the 929, will go head-to-head with the likes of the Aston Martin DB9 and Ferrari California around 2014/2015.
Here's where things get interesting: Not only is Porsche looking to produce a coupe, it is said to also be considering building a soft-top convertible. Given that this car will likely have a higher price to enter -- I am guesstimating around $175 - 200k -- it should not compete with the likes of the 911 or create demand destruction.
Oh yeah, there is also a catch. There's no way that a Panamera coupe will be coming with the first-generation car. Expect Panamera derivatives to make their way into the lineup with the second-gen product, says the source.
Any thoughts on this, Spies?
A two-door, front-engined Porsche GT coupé is being planned as part of the second-generation Porsche Panamera family, highly placed sources have told Autocar.
The model is pencilled in for launch after the replacement for the Panamera four-door, scheduled for 2014/15.
Porsche is planning the new two-door GT on a short-chassis version of the next Panamera’s underpinnings. It will attempt to capture the magic of the 928 coupé from the late 1970s...
