Seen in different colors and different wheel options, it's an interesting take on the wagon and I'd venture out to say this is Mercedes' best answer towards cars like the Audi A7, BMW 5-Series GT, and Porsche Panamera since they all have rear hatches instead of trunks.
Pure speculation here, but I'd guess that Mercedes didn't want to ruin a good thing with its four-door coupe styling and decided it was in the CLS' best interest to keep it as a standard sedan and release a "shooting brake" for those who want the utility of a hatch.
