Mercedes-Benz is one of the brands that started it all. Many claim it is actually the first manufacturer to build a properly functioning automobile. I guess it ultimately depends on your metrics.

Sure its ergonomics were a bit ridiculous but, after all, it wouldn't be a Daimler without that "quirk."

But if you've been paying attention in recent years, it seems as though the marque has lost some of that sex appeal and lust factor. And I am not the only one noticing -- buyers have jumped ship to Audi, BMW and the all-new Porsches coming to the marketplace.

However, it looks like Mercedes-Benz is onto something with its all-new A-Class. This isn't so much of a philosophical conversation as it is one about sales. According to reports, Mercedes has topped 90,000 units in the order books for the A-Class.

To compare, the all-new Volkswagen Golf has only 40,000 units in the books -- granted they were behind by several months.

Now if you want to get philosophical about it, it's clear that the A-Class will mark a shift to a more sexy Mercedes. Just look at its interior!

If this all means nothing to you, get a load of this. Agent 001, who isn't about to have a love fest over the three-pointed star, has told me on several occasions that the all-new A-Class is his favorite Benz in years.

With all that being said, I am a bit curious:

Germany's Daimler (DAIGn.DE) has almost 90,000 orders for the revamped A-class compact of its Mercedes-Benz luxury division, Die Zeit reported, citing Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche.

That would compare with advance orders of more than 40,000 for Volkswagen's (VOWG_p.DE) overhauled Golf hatchback, which is vying for customers with the A-Class in the competitive compact segment...
