The original CLS was a complete and fabulous scam. Mercedes-Benz realized that it could charge a premium for a version of the E-Class sedan so beautiful that it couldn’t even be called a sedan. The four-door coupe was born, and because the Germans can’t help themselves when they see a good idea, each of the three German luxury marques now makes a low-roof, style-focused, elegant four-door.
Of course, Germany isn’t known for art and sex—in fact, only the Germans could come up with the über-nerdy idea of taking a staid luxury sedan and then purposefully engineering a sexy variant. Then again, only Germans could make sedans with this kind of performance. Equipped with twin-turbo V-8 engines and all-wheel drive, these are all-weather supercar slayers with supermodel looks.
We named one of this trio a winner, but there is genuinely no loser in this group. These are three of the finest automobiles in the world, brimming with technology, safety, and speed. It just so happens that we like one best.
