Jaguar And Land Rover To No Longer Report U.S. Sales Figures

and Land Rover divisions no longer will report U.S. monthly sales, citing a strategy that stresses quality over quantity.

The U.K.-based luxury auto makers continued to make public monthly tallies following their sale by former parent Ford Motor Co. to Tata earlier this year, but have ceased the practice as of this month.
 

In August, Jaguar U.S. deliveries rose an estimated 1.3% over year-ago to 1,377 units, while Land Rover’s sales of 1,961 marked a 59.6% decline, according to a Ward’s estimate.

Jaguar and Land Rover spokeswoman Barbara Barrett says in an e-mail response that the divisions are niche auto makers and as such no longer are compelled to report sales figures.

Jaguar, at least, has been doing rather well lately so I don't know that I find the statement that they are trying to hide their sales problems compelling. This is particularly true after reading the article which states that this move was considered before Tata purchased the marques.

I have been thinking about this move and the reason(s) for it. Although, the XF was anticipated to have exceptionally high resale- it may stop resale retained value speculation by removing any effective information about supply.

It's not like Jaguar or Land Rover sales were huge anyway. With the amount of cars they produce and sell you would think that they could have focused on quality much easier than other brands.

Nonetheless, I like the direction Jaguar is taking. The XF is stunning.

I had the pleasure of having dinner with Rutan TaTa( founder and owner of TATA). My father has been good friends with him for a while and was visiting LA for some business. Anyways we had a discussion about Jaguar and Land Rover. He says that Jaguar and Land Rover in Europe and Asia are still considered premium brands like Aston Martin, Mercedes and other luxury brands. Its just that Ford really dilluted the brand in the US by coming out cheaper affordable models. His plan is to get rid of the affordable entry level models and focus on the high end models such as the XJ, XK and XF. Cut the production down on them and make them more exclusive. Same with the Land Rover.

Make them more reliable and maybe they will have some sales to report. The Land Rovers are just terrible quality wise, although the design is appealing.

what does focusing on quality not quantity have to do with releasing sales figures...besides nothing, I wonder if they are afraid the XF wont be as succesful as they thought....I hope the best for Jaguar the XF is really a big step in the right direction

Jaguar/Landrover are trophies, they don't need to have high sales or to even make money.

Jaguar will probably drop the S-Type along with the X-Type. RangeRovers seem to be selling well but I doubt the voluem justifies the factory costs.

Benz outsells Jaguar by a wide margin. There are far more Benzes on the road than Jags. Jaguar only offers 3 models compared to MB's extensive portfolio...

By every definition, Jaguar IS more exclusive than Mercedes-Benz, just perhaps not in the exact way that they would like to be.

You need a dictionary. Less supply = more exclusivity.
