Why do so many BMW owners like to rebadge their cars in an attempt to appear that they drive a better model than they actually do?

I'm going to be switching to BMW but it does annoy me that BMW owners rebadge their cars to make them appear like a better or higher model.

For example someone will be driving a 325i and rebadge it as a 330 or someone will drive a 650i and rebadge it as an M6.

I just don't understand it and how did BMW get the clueless blonde airhead yuppy/real-estate agent image?
