Sometimes I can't help overhearing.

"See that," the guy at the Tim Horton's was saying to his girlfriend as he walked past and jabbed his thumb at the BMW. "That's the ultimate car."

There should be a certain point where the pinnacle of performance peaks against the ultimate in luxury. There should even be a point where those two qualities begin to conflict and cancel each other out, where taut performance becomes hampered by sumptuous styling and the trappings of comfort.

But somehow, I haven't found that point yet. At least, not in a BMW.

For 2006, BMW has refined its top-of-the-line 7 Series with refinements in both performance and amenities.

The new car takes its first step forward by taking a half-step back.

In 2002, this current generation 7 Series debuted to both acclaim and criticism, inevitable whenever a brand icon undergoes major changes.

Designer Chris Bangle's "flame styling" has been muted somewhat in the 2006 7 Series, returning classic BMW overtones mixed with a progressive new sense of style and a leaner look.
