The Obama administration today will unveil its several hundred-page proposal setting fuel efficiency standards at 35.5 mpg by 2016 and proposing the first-ever federal limits on tailpipe emissions.

EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will unveil the proposal at the White House briefing room at noon. EPA and NHTSA will post the new proposals on government Web sites at noon.

The government said the policy will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 950 million metric tons, save the average car buyer more than $3,000 in fuel costs and conserve 1.8 billion barrels of oil.
