2007 Audi S5 Driving Experience
Verona, Italy – “FIGHT!” It’s that one word yelled at the top of the lungs that can bring every kid in the schoolyard running. On the playground of the auto industry, there’s no better grudge match than two-door performance coupes. Whether it’s the brawl of American muscle cars, the Judo sparring of high-tech Japanese sportscars or the rapier dueling of European performance coupes like Audi ’s new S5, it’s enough to make any red-blooded car buff drop his dodge ball and crowd around.
For years, Audi has chosen to stay out of the ring, with nothing to pitch against BMW’s own 3 Series coupe. But now, Ingolstadt is back to square off against its Munich rival, not to mention the rest of the field. The company has fast-tracked the new S5 coupe to market, arriving months before the much-vaunted next-gen M3.
An S-badged coupe is kind of a big deal. It’s been twelve years since the European-only S2 coupe left market, and a full 23 years since the original ur-Quattro marked the most recent offering in this segment for the U.S.A. Since then, BMW has enjoyed a mainly un-rivaled dominance. Whereas the first Quattro taught the original M3 that blistered fenders were cool, today’s S5 finds itself more squarely facing the turbocharged BMW 335i, leaving the M3 fight to the rumored, much-anticipated and highly likely RS 5.

This car is extremely handsome. It reminds me alot of myself...
If BMW were to offer a 335i Coupe with an "M" package of some sort, I'd be hard pressed to pass that up for this, specially considering the $.

BMW already offers full M-sport packages, Aero-kit package and Individual GmbH packages.
Aero-kit:

let me get this str8 ... The Audi S5 will have less headroom and leg room than the 335, it will perform about the same in acceleration and handling, & will cost about $5 to $10k more than a full loaded 335 coupe. Makes sense to me. I do like the aggressive front end of the Audi S5. I am still not to keen on the back or side profile. I dont think it flows naturally from front to rear.

No, it won't. Fully-loaded 335i coupe is $56K, which is a few thousand more than what the S5 will cost. I figure that at around $55K (with a few options), it will be just as well-equipped as a similarly-priced 335i coupe, so it makes more sense than you think.
BTW, BMW quotes 5.3 seconds for the 335i's 0-60. I know they always underestimate, but so does Audi, and Audi quoted 5.1. It will be slightly quicker than the BMW.

I specced up the S4 cabriolet and 335i convertible and they come out the nearly the same, BMW scrimps on options like heated seats and stuff.
I expect the same for the S5 and 335i coupe.

Tell you the truth I wondered why Audi priced the A/S 5 this way... it just didn't make sense if they wanted to take sales from BMW. When you check it out though - they priced it in the same range as the CLK Benzez. If the reports are correct of $40k for the A5 and $55k for the S5 (an RS5 would probably reach $65k) this is much closer to the CLK 350 and 550 (and most likely the RS would be right near the AMG). I guess Audi was telling the truth when they said in the U.S. they want profits more than volume.

I think the audi wins this comparison because it looks more aggressive and is far more exclusive.
I see more 3series BMW's in LA then any other car.
Cmon I dont think BMW and Audi fans should be arguing.
I own both and i can say both are equal.
3Series is has better handling.
A4 just is unrivaled in winter / rain.
What i think most of you are too focused on is how it goes around a track. i bet 95% of everybody on here as never even driven a car or specially their own around a track.
P.s.:
Lets hate on Lexus lol.

thanks for the unbiased opinion. It's like me - we've had an Audi in our family so I prefer German cars. The same with Honda and Toyota - we've owned both and I've spent equal time in both - so I can unbiasedly say I prefer Honda's (even though there was nothing "wrong" with the Toyota).
I also agree that most people (not on this site per se) that buy these vehicles will NEVER explore the limits, nor do they know how. Most people buy these cars in this class as status symbols. While no one went to the track - believe me that Audi in our housen did get pushed and driven. I can say the same for relatives of mine that own BMW's and Benzez. I know they push them (and they' let me also ;-) - but most people I know just "play around in them".
