2007 Holiday Gift Guide: Tom Tom 920T- Time to say no to factory NAV and go portable?
We have been preparing the AutoSpies.com 2007 Holiday Gift Guide (Coming next week) and we just got this gem today and couldn't wait to tell you about it.

We wonder if devices this good, signify the beginning of the end for integrated navigation systems, from the auto manufacturers...

TomTom Introduces New High-End TomTom GO 920 Range in North America

~ Premium TomTom GO 920 Range comes complete with most extensive maps of Europe and North America, and comes complete with Voice Prompted Address Entry and Enhanced Positioning Technology ~

TomTom, the world’s largest portable navigation solutions provider, today revealed its new high-end flagship models, the TomTom GO 920 and TomTom GO 920T. The devices come preinstalled with complete maps of the United States, Canada and Europe* on the 4 GB of internal memory. The range includes the new Enhanced Positioning Technology for a more continuous navigation experience and comes complete with voice prompted address entry. The GO 920 is compatible with an RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver** to receive up-to-date traffic information. The GO 920T includes the RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver in the box and a one year traffic subscription.

“The new flagship TomTom GO 920 range offers the best in satellite navigation,” said Jocelyn Vigreux, President of TomTom Inc. “Pre-installed maps of multiple continents and innovative technologies such as voice prompted address entry, the new Enhanced Positioning Technology, TomTom Map Share™ and plug & play traffic information, offer outstanding quality and performance. The TomTom GO 920 range is the most advanced navigation solution on the market today.”

Most complete set of maps

The new TomTom GO 920 range offers the most-up-to-date maps of the United States and Canada and a seamless map of 41 countries in both Western and Central Europe preinstalled on the 4 GB internal memory of the device. This makes the TomTom GO 920 the personal navigation device with the most complete set of preinstalled maps available in TomTom’s entire portfolio.

Traffic

The TomTom GO 920 range allows users to receive up-to-date traffic information via the RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver or through TomTom’s own subscription-based traffic service. The RDS-TMC Traffic Receiver and a one year subscription is included in the box in the GO 920T model. The traffic receiver is sold as a separate accessory for the GO 920 model.

Voice Prompted Address Entry

Voice prompted address entry gives users the option to speak the address to which they want to drive. Users can simply speak the city, street name and address number they would like to travel to, and the device will automatically calculate the route.

Best navigation with TomTom Map Share™ and Enhanced Positioning

Technology

The TomTom GO 920 range comes with the latest version of TomTom’s awardwinning software, and includes TomTom Map Share™ technology. TomTom Map Share™ enables users to make easy changes to the map and to share map corrections with other TomTom customers so that users always have the most up-todate maps available.
TomTom’s new Enhanced Positioning Technology uses movement and gravity sensors to calculate drivers’ positions when GPS signals are unavailable. TomTom GO 920 range users will have a much more continuous navigation experience as the Enhanced Positioning Technology ensures the device continues to navigate to its destination, even in circumstances where there may not be a direct line-of-sight connection to a satellite (for example, when driving in a city with tall buildings, underpasses or bridges).

Remote control

The TomTom GO 920 range comes with an improved Bluetooth™ remote control. The remote control enables drivers to operate the device safely from anywhere in the car without having to reach over to the device.

Extensive set of features

TomTom GO 920 range replaces the current TomTom GO 910/510 and offers the best in navigation and performance. The TomTom GO 920 comes preinstalled with the latest navigation software and features, such as:

- Large 4.3 inch touch screen with high quality graphics, an intuitive user interface and building footprints to view drivers’ surroundings better;
- TomTom Map Share™ Technology: that allows users to instantly correct maps, share changes with other users, and benefit from improvements made by other users;

I am continually amazed that automobile manufactures still command $2,000.00 or more for navigation system when the after-market makers max out at about $600.00.

yeah, but with this you have extra cables hanging your dashboard and obstructed vission because of the unit. I tried using a radar detector on my Audi, it looked so disgusting with the cord around there .. I had to return it and buy the integrated version, more expensive but defitenelly not screwing with my interior at all.

Plus: having a nice GPS/radar on the winshield it's just like an invitation to get a broken side window: "hey, see what I have? please brake my car and get it. It will only take about 5 seconds, and you can make a few hundred bucks."

I agree with you completely, I just think the automaker are ripping off the consumer.

rg-

1. You can hardwire radar and nav so the wire and unit are both pretty much hidden. Not to mention that most portable NAV systems have long batteries so they can run without cords when you have guests in your car.

2. By simply pulling the NAV system off your windshield and locking it in your glove compartment it erases this problem. You can't exactly do that with an integrated unit.

But yes, I completely agree. Theres really no reasoning for a $2000 NAV unit when a good one costs $300.

I would pay not to have it. I don't need it and I would never be willing to get ripped off with monthly charges for something I might only use once or twice as a new toy to try out. I find it easier to read maps. I usually stay on the Interstate and, if I do happen to stray off for a good reason, I have a pretty good memory for getting back on track. Only once in my long life did I go around in a big circle on winter logging roads in the Adirondacks in a failed attempt to take a shortcut to my destination.

001: you are kidding, right?

No add on unit will look better than an integrated navi system, no matter how smart it is or how many remotes it has.

This unit is a really cool thing for those who got their car second hand and with no factory navi, but otherwise, if you buy your car new, please do yourself a favor and add the navigation. Yes, it's expensive, but ANY car will look better with no extra items on the dash or sticked on the windshield. There is a huge market for GPS devices now, but TOMtom will have to change dramatically in the next 10 years: every single car will have integrated navigation. TomTom will either go extinct or change their business, they won't be able to hit into regular guys like me & you.

Right now, for most people, the removable units make more sense both practically and financially.

Most people have more than one vehicle or carpool and the combination of bluetooth, traffic, mp3 and nav all in one nice unit, that they can take wherever for a reasonable price is pretty compelling.

Of course, if dough is not an issue, get it integrated.

But 2G's for integrated nav in 2007?

I say it should be $999 MAX.

I think in some states (CA for example) it is illegal to have anything attached to the windshield (saved the backview mirror). Check the vehicle codes if you doubt.
Integration has a price tag on it.

Sorry, but I prefer the look of the integrated versions too much. I don't mind the cost.

Oh and, I'm looking to buy myself a holiday gift this year... (-:

I'm looking for a new ultracompact digital camera, and the Canon PowerShot SX100 IS is currently at the top of my list... doesn't look small in pictures, but I saw it, and it's quite pocketable.

I was actually already looking at the SD870 when I happened upon the SX100. I took pictures with both (alas, at the Best Buy store) and found that the SX100's were brighter and clearer, it has manual controls and it costs less.

The Sony T-Series Cybershot cameras with the Sliding Lens Cover is also quite Good.

I was pretty happy with the DSC-T200
