Audi A4 "the sportiest car in its class".
Audi is on a mission to reinvent itself in the United States, and the 2009 Audi A4 is an important part of that quest. The company hasn't yet grabbed the entry-luxury market by the throat in America as it has in Europe. After spending about a billion dollars thinking about its stance relative to the Bavarian competition, Audi thinks it has the solution in the redesign of the A4, its best-selling car.

Initial impressions revealed nothing but good news. Even hidden under heavy camouflage in spy photos, the 2009 Audi A4 began to excite. It became obvious that the car would borrow many of its razor-sharp lines from the A5 coupe, like its aggressive flat face and austere Bauhaus lines.

Then the new A4 made its worldwide debut at the
2007 Frankfurt Auto Show. Audi's chairman of the executive board, Rupert Stadler said that dynamics, performance and technology would be the new corporate mantra. The company went further to proclaim that the 2009 Audi A4 is dramatically more engaging to drive, and is the sportiest car in its class. Audi is genuinely hoping to usurp the BMW 3 Series as the driver's choice.

Audi has good reason to have high expectations. The new car is built atop an entirely new all-steel chassis, which Audi calls a Modular Longitudinal Platform (MLP). The new design allows for the placement of engine and transmission a full 5.9 inches rearward by mounting the differential forward of the gearbox, which in turn allows the front wheels to be located closer to the nose. This translates to better driving dynamics.

On the topic of differentials, Audi has changed the all-wheel-drive system around, too. The company states the purpose of the new 40/60 torque split is to increase stability in low-speed corners. But the unwritten goal is, of course, to come closer to the rear-wheel-drive feel of offerings from BMW and Mercedes.

We drove the revamped A4 last October and were immediately able to spackle some concrete behind Audi's bold claims. We wrote of the handling as "a revelation," saying that the car turned in briskly and inspired real driver confidence.

If the chassis is something to write home about, the powertrain options are short of revolutionary. As before, Americans will have a choice of a turbocharged, two-liter four-cylinder in front-wheel-drive models (initially) or a 3.2-liter V6 for the AWD A4.

The grass is greener in Europe, where buyers can opt for three different turbodiesels: a 140-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder, a 190-hp 2.7-liter V6 and a new "clean" 3.0-liter V6 that makes 240 hp and 369 pound-feet of torque. We wait with the Europeans for the S4, which will likely carry the same 354-hp V8 of the S5.

With $3 billion and three years invested in a complete redesign, the refocused 2009 Audi A4 is sure to make our radar in the months before its release. And its new performance-geared promise makes us all the more eager to put it under the gun of our test equipment.

Great lineup of (turbo)diesels...

I'm just not 'warming up to' the looks this time around, as I don't care for this new 'Droopy Butt' design language that Audi debuted on the Q7.

Stylistically, it's somewhat a step backwards for Audi, and as nicely put together as Audi interiors tend to be, from design standpoint, they seem to be resting on their laurels a bit too much with their latest offerings.

Other opinions may differ, but these are mine.

Just leased IS250 for my dad vs. current 2.0T A4. The 4 cylinder engine is too noisy and unrefined. My sister has the A4 and the IS has far better drive.
I am not a Lexus or Audi fan so I have not bias...

has any [car magazine, blog, company] done a comparision of the IS-F, M3 Sedan, C-Class AMG, and the A4?

ALTERNATE TEST: IS350, 328i, C-class, A4?

The RS4 was compared to the IS-F, and it won.

Neither of the two entry level A4 models will be competing with the 335i or IS350. The A4 3.2 is competing with the BMW 328i. The upcoming B8 S4 will drop the V8 in favor of a twin turbo V6 with ~330ish hp. That will be competing with the BMW 335i. Finally, the RS4 with its upcoming 4.2L ~450ish hp V8 will be competing with the M3 Sedan. There will also be a similar engined RS5 to compete with the M3 Coupe.

i still remember the days when the s4 competes directly with m3 with the same asking price etc etc.

so since when does a $10,000 more expensive car (s4)compete so closely with a cheaper car (335i) which is also more fun to drive?

it must mean either audi diluted the 'S' badge altogether or that the S4 is just an anomaly in audi's S lineup and it's not worth the money to get one.

they started competing because the posters here said so lol....the S4 for years has competed with the M3, now that the RS4 is here it is supposed to be the M3 competitor and now all of sudden Audi has 3 entry level cars turbo 4, v6, and s4.....sound rediculous and unlogical oh yeah....the turbo 4 competes with the 328i it always has the v6 will compete with the 335i,

The S models never competed with the M models, the RS models always competed or surpassed the M models.

It's just that BMW was slow with updating their M3 models that Audi incase of the S4 started to catch up to them with just the S4.

Audi has been making RS models since 1994, just not in the US.

1989
Audi S2 - 210hp
BMW M3 - 200hp

1994
Audi S2 - 230hp
BMW M3 - 286hp
Audi RS2 - 314hp

1998
Audi S4 - 265hp
BMW M3 - 320hp

2000
Audi S4 - 265hp
BMW M3 - 343hp
Audi RS4 - 380hp

2002
Audi S4 - 344hp
BMW M3 - 343hp

2005
Audi S4 - 344hp
BMW M3 - 343hp
Audi RS4 - 420hp

2007
Audi S4 - 344hp
BMW M3 - 420hp
Audi RS4 - 420hp

thanks for taking the time to prove my point, about the S cars competing with the M cars from BMW, ill agree with he fact that the rs4 cars are a way to surpass the M, and AMG cars...the RS4(last generation) and new M3 have close to the same power output im sure that when the new RS4 is released it will have more power than the new M3, but the last generation M3 and S4 had very close power outputs with the S4 having more power. So yes the M3 and S cars for years have competed with the RS cars being much more focused performance cars than the S cars. With that said the 2.0t, and V6 have always been the cars to go against the lower end C class, and 3 series, nothing has changed....

"so since when does a $10,000 more expensive car (s4)compete so closely with a cheaper car (335i) which is also more fun to drive?"

HOW DO YOU KNOW IT WILL BE $10,000 MORE EXPENSIVE?

You're thinking about the S5 and the 335xi coupe. Well, listen to this: when both are loaded with every option, the S5 is only about $700 more than the 335xi coupe... but it gives you 54 more horsepower, 19" rims, a better interior and sexier style to play with. And for the record, it is quicker--S5's fastest recorded 0-60 time is currently 4.5 sec.

However, the new S4 will most likely be ~$5,000 less than the S5, for a few reasons: Audi four-doors have traditionally been less expensive than the coupes, and the S4 will have a twin-turbo six instead of the S5's costlier, heavier V8. It will probably be even quicker than the S5, because the normal A4 weighs less than the A5 with the same engine.

There you go...

S4 .. you are incorrect in regards to the 335xi coupe vs the audi S5. You say all the options which means the BMW will have more equipment than is available on the S5. If you price them out comparatively, then you will notice the S5 is actually about $5k more than the 335xi coupe. Then include the maint for the next 4 years which saves you an additional $2k ... For that $2k, i can chip a 335xi coupe and bring the hp via dinan up to 384 hp and 421 lbs of torque ...

Notice how I wrote that. I think that easily makes up the $5K difference that you stated... with no proof, of course.

Also, why not stay on topic? I was proving my point about the S4, not only talking about the S5. Do you have anything to say about the S4?

a 335xi sedan is $8000 cheaper than a 2007 S4. put $2000 aside for a dinan upgrade, include a dinan warranty that matches bmw NA's 4 year 50,000 mile warranty, and $5000 for a hartge LSD, $1000 for michelin PS2 and i'll bet you anything that this 335xi will smoke any brand new S4.

the real question now is whether both cars are being sold at MSRP out the door.

are you people high. The IS350 doesnt compete very well vs the 335. Have you even driven the cars, and I mean really driven them? The is350 is slower, too much body roll. It feels fast in a str8 line but not when you drive the 335 and the car back to back over the same course and try to mimic the same speed. It is night and day ....

About the IS250 x package. So? The car is still underpowered and slow ... Also, when exactly did the IS350 best the 330 or 335 in a comparison test.. none ...

bulldogzbulldogz - 1/8/2008 11:46:36 AM
+3 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
Dude, the 330 was embarrassed by the IS350 in literally everything incl. breaking, then the cries came "b..bu...bu...but wait for the 335, this isn't fair!". And sure enough, the company that explicitly said that they wouldn't again resort to turbo did just that. Is it a great engine? Yes, but God help you when you go out of warranty. Oh, and just to let you know, my wife's 330 overheated (malfunctioned temp gauge per BMW) and was fortunate enough to get them to pay half for a new engine to the tune of $4500. So please don't tell me they're bullet-proof, they're aluminum and don't withstand high temps too well (BMW's words btw).

Did I mention this was only 15 minutes of driving, and that the car had been in the shop only a week earlier to be winterized?? (Hence their agreement to pay as it was a year out of warranty).

And if you think the IS350 has a cheap interior, you're alone. That is one of the primary compliments all auto reviews give it, I wish the same could be said for the 3-series though.

THE OPINIONS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE ACTUALLY SAT IN IT AND DRIVEN IT:

Every magazine has said the new A4 raises the bar again with its gorgeous interior, unflattering press shots regardless. I'd like to have a word with the guy who chose to smatter a black interior with aluminum trim all over the Internet... how about a more creative color that shows off the A4's materials?

I got my latest issue of European Car mag today, and in it was a tidbit from an interview with an Audi exec. He said that yes, the next lineup of cars will have turbos, and also that we shouldn't expect massive power increases à la the competition. Audi is more focused on lowering weight, improving handling and upping the fuel efficiency at the moment... which I heartily endorse. The new A4 showcases that; the old 3.2 was painfully slow compared to the competition (try 0-60 in 7 sec), but the new model will be able to break six. The same applies to the new TT; it has the same V6 but is much quicker.

umm... it was audi chairman who proclaimed that the a4 was the sportiest car of its class, not edmunds.

we should just wait for the class shootout or the actual office release of the a4 to see.

Ohh come on... Are you just another one-brand-cowboy who is constantly looking for something to complain about with all other makes?! THE CAR IS TOO BIG?!? I've heard many strange excuses to dislike a car, but I think that is one of the more colorful! So you buy a compact exec sedan because you can't really afford the big brother (which is the only real reason not to buy that one) and you complain about it being too big?!? It doesn't look any bigger than the competitors, it doesn't cost more, all it does is offer an extra bit of leg room and boot space, and now that is suddenly a good thing?! Would you rather have a 3-series or an IS where you can't get anyone above 6 feet in the rear seats(believe me, I've tried in both) just because they are smaller?! Come on! It is a great car and there is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with the size of it (the next IS will most probably be the same sie BTW, it is called progress)...

anyways this article is about the new Audi A4 and not a comparison bout the 3-series vs the Lexus ..

I like the A4 and think this is a nice change in comparison to the BMW. I wish Audi would make a more competitive engine . It is good to see that they are finally realizing that in order to compete with the BMW, that the wheels have to be pushed out as far as they can go + the engine and transmission have to be set back more. This provides better balance = better handling ...

Do I dare ask what you drives? It shouldn't by any chance be the much-better-sized-standard-setting IS350? Don't worry, I'm not slamming the IS, I like it, I just get a little fed up with people tooting a special car just because they bought one and they have that "I'll be damned if I have to admit that something outthere might be better than my car"-attitude which seems to be ohh so popular with the one brand fanboys here...

the reason why the new A4's 3.2L engine only produces 265 is because they're recycling the same old engine that's been around for nearly a decade. there's nothing new internally and the engines are probably collecting cobwebs in audi's factory.

Audi needs a new, more powerful V-6 to stay competitive with the economy and performance of BMW's wonderful twin turbo V-6, Lexus's smooth and strong top of the line V-6, CAdillac's new V-6, and Infiniti's strong and sporty 306 hp 3.6 liter. The V-8 S4 can't compete on the same fuel economy level as these engines or price wise, especially considering the prices of the CTS and Infiniti, and even more so considering the Infiniti's performance. (+ I heard that to keep the Infiniti ahead of the game they are going to drop the G37's engine in the G35)

market leader, the c class has always been behind the 3 and A4. the C has been the joke of this segment for years. The new C class finally is very respectable and near the top of the class with the 3, but the new A4 will also be up there.

HAHAHAHAH AmazinIdiot posting purely subjective and opinionated comments with no objective data to support his claim...AGAIN!!

amazinIdiot, do you have any more subjective opinions you care to share with us that can't be proven by actual facts?

Cheapest? You were obviously proven wrong on that point amazinIdiot.

Geez, your lack of supporting factual data to substantiate your claim amazes me.

Looks like someone will never realize that unless you post objective data to support your claim, your comments can never be taken seriously.

i LOVE THE LOOKS OF THE NEW A4, ALWAYS HAVE, as I am on my second one and 3rd Audi to date. I think it looks the best in its class and hopefully the new platform will help alot with the handling.

I just wish the A4 could get the rumored V6TT instead of the S4. I am an Avid Audi fan but the S4 should not compete with the 335i, it should be the A4 vs the 335i.Why does someone have to spend the extra cash for an 'S' version to get the same performance as the regular 3 series. Yes the current s4 is only about 4g's more then a similiar equipped 335Xi, but the lease prices are about $400 more a month , because of the 'S' tag.

I feel if audi put the rumored V6TT in the A4 not the S4, it will be the best car in its class, to me it already has the best looks and interior, now it just needs the performnce to go with it!

I AGREE!!! But I also think they should dump the A4 3.2 altogether and turn the S4 into the mid-level model. It should just be the A4 (2.0T), S4 (3.0TT) and RS4 (4.2). Period!

A4 should be $30-40K, S4 should be $40-50K and RS4 should be $55-65K.

I agree, would love if the S4 was in the 40-50k price range. But do you keep the 4banger turbo or go with a new V6 for the A4. I would keep the 2.0T , it outsells the 3.2 probably 5-1, if not more.

What I would really like is
A4 2.0T 220HP
A4 V6TT 310HP
S4 V8 390HP
RS4 V8TT 475HP If they can get 420HP N/A, 475 would be very easy with 2 turbo's added on a new 4.2.

This is what I want:

A4 2.0T 230HP ($30-35K)

S4 3.0TT 330HP ($40-50K)

RS4 4.2 450HP ($60-70K)

I agree the Audi isn't the sportiet, but it also isn't the cheapest you amazinIdiot.

amazinIdiot, why are you not bringing up the 350 horsepower twin-turbo V6 S4 with an official 0-60 time no slower than 5.2 seconds?

The S4 will be just as fast as your 300 horsepower twin-turbo 6 and the BMW is so much cheaper it makes me wonder can those 335i owners really afford an S4. The S4 currently starts at $48,610 which is almost $10K more than the 335i sedan and nearly $8k more than the 335i coupe

C'mon do you have any actual pricing data directly from either Audiusa.com or bmwusa.com to help substantiate your arguement and refute my claim?

I'm waiting to hear from you amazinIdiot...

SHOW ME ACTUAL DATA THAT SUPPORTS YOUR CLAIM MORON!

they don't have a TT v6, so i don't know what you're talking about. and the prototype engine they have in development isn't even out yet, and the specs are just speculation, nothing more.

it doesn't matter if the s4 is more expensive than the 335i, because in the end, an audi is just an audi. it won't have a blue and white rondel.

in fact, you can even think of the more expensive s4 as overpriced and overhyped. if you allow yourself to be humble for once...

1. First part is ridiculously shallow. You don't see my trading in my car for a 335 because of the badge on its hood.

2. The excellence of a car (or lack of) is not universal. I love my S4, it's incredible, and I think of its $65K sticker as a bargain. The V8 is glorious, the interior is beautiful, the rear seat is useful, the handling is confident, it tracks through the winter like a pro and I love the way it looks with the top down.

"overhyped?" The S4 has barely been hyped at all. If anything, it's underrated.

The new A4 is a very beautiful car! To start with, I didn't really like it as I thought the changes were too subtle, but I've really grown to appreciate exactly what they've done here! To me, this is the best looking car in it's class right now! I'm still looking forward to a test drive in one! If I were looking for a car in this class, this would definitely be at the top of my list... Unfortunately, the A6 doesn't hold the same status in it's segment to me, so I think I'll keep steering towards that 550i I've been dreaming of for the last few months!

Anyway, congrats to Audi for making such a good looking, and apparantly, well handling car!

New A4 is a great car and will be a great seller for Audi. I don't get why most of the 14 year olds on this site not wait until they can drive and drive it for themselves, before making idiotic comments.

Is it the sportiest in the class? probably not, but is it sporty, I bet it is. Its a great improvement from the old A4, and it continues Audi's climb. Why does every success for a company have to be met by dumb comments trying to bring it down?
