Audi S5: 0-60 in 4.5 Seconds
The Motor Trend blog entry starts out as many other Audi S5 reviews have, talking about its style. Style is important in a coupe, but a sports coupe must deliver some performance as well. And the S5 does as it did the 0-60 sprint in only 4.5 seconds with the quarter mile coming in 13.1 seconds @ 105.2 mph. These numbers put the S5 in front of the current S4 and the BMW 335i. Check out the rest of the review for more impressions of the new S5. Read Article

DAMN, I thought it will be on par with 335i. Guess I was wrong.

I can't wait for the RS5 with TT on this engine..It will be super fast.

Keep up the good work Audi.

+13 hp translates to 0.4s quicker 0-60? I know it's a different car but wow.

wait for the 335xi Coupe coming out in October. BMW estimates the all-wheel drive coupe will be 0.1-0.2 seconds quicker than the regular 335i Coupe, giving it virtually identical performance stats to the S5 for a lot less money.

Yeah, the S4 already starts at 47k, compared to a 40k base for the 335i

I don't about the S5 road test in motor trend but the 335i is faster in every article I have read. The 335i even posted a faster lap time than the RS4 in this month's car and driver

looking bad for the 335i. First, it was the G37, now the Audi S5, and Audi hasn't even come with the big guns yet...

I notice the same slash on the lower door sill of the Audi that BMW's 1 series has it's lower door sill.

G37? Oh yeah the car that is slower, doesnt stop as well, smaller, but costs a little less. I think it will be interesting when the Audi S5 and the 335 are compared. One thing though, the Audi S5 is alot more expensive

The 450bhp RS5 should be epic. All the more reason for BMW to build that M3 CSL.

It doesn't make sense, unless you really want the bimmer to win.

Just the engines in europe, they do not have only 2-3 engines for the whole lineup. BMW and Audi have quite a few engines for the regular 3 series or A4. Like 10 different engines EACH. It's gonna be really hard for you to match each BMW engine with an Audi one or the other way around. Cause they don't really match. Some go for the performance, some for gas saving and so on. US a market who only gets a few engines.

You are upset cause instead of naming the A4 4.2 they call him S4? The same engine in the S4 it's used in A6, called Audi A6 4.2. If BMW can change the name from 330i to 335i then Audi can do the same/similar.

e90- the S5 does have a dual exaust on both sides, not just the driver side. you cant see it in the pics, but go to Audiusa.com and you will see it.

0-60 in 4.5 seconds is fast for any car, but for the Audi S5 this is great news. The 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds makes the S5 3 tenths quicks to 60 mph than the BMW 335i coupe.

Even in Xi form, the 335i coupe will still be .1 or .2 seconds slower to 60 mph than the Audi S5.

0-60 in 4.5 seconds for JUST the S5.

What in the hell will Audi come up with for the RS5????

0-60 in slowest 4.4 seconds for the RS5 seems probable with most times more than likely being in the 4.1 - 4.3 second range.

That also means another thing:

Goodbye BMW M3 in the straight-line acceleration comparison between the Audi RS5 and the BMW M3.

In R&T's latest comparison between the G37 & 335i, they pull off 4.8 sec to 60mph & 13.4@105.1mph for the 1/4 mile.

If the S5 got a 4.5 sec with 354HP, then the 450 HP TT RS5 will be around 4 flat. With almost 100 More HP , it will probaly be lighter then the S5, and ALOT more TORQUE due to the TT, its very possible.

I dont think the M3 will out perform the RS4, but if it does, it will not outperform the RS5. So the M3 might be the King for a year or so, but it will be over once the RS5 comes out.

But honestly , I would be happy with anyone of those cars. (RS4,M3,RS5,S5)

Comparing a 335i to an S5 is kind of like comparing an E550 Sport to an M5 isn't it? The S/RS line of Audi cars represent a step up above the average performance.

Very true, but what will the RS5 compete with then? It is a much fairer comparison to compare M3 to S5 because they have the same displacement but usually the RS models compete with the M models.

rg12345rg12345 - 7/17/2007 2:38:13 PM

Check the new prices WILL. The new M3 won't be 50k anymore, it's suppose to hit wel over 60k. The RS4 is at 66k, with the RS5 close there. It will be a few thousand dollars difference, but u get more car in the RS5 then in the M3. It's bigger, wider with more stuff inside. The A5/S5 is bigger than A4 series, it's actually closer to A6 in dimensions.

MotorTrend ALWAYS gets faster and better performance figures than the rest. R&T (my choice) and C&D are more credible. Besides MT's editors suck - too subjective. Why would you compare the S5 to the 335i? It should be A5 to 335i and S5 to M3. These are the crap comparos MT always puts out, they never make sense? Besides the S5 costs WAY more $$ than a 335i. Audis are overpriced - but nice!

The S5 will be closer in price to the 335i then it will be to the M3, so both comparisons would be unfair. The S5 is in between the 335i and New M3.

The best comparison would be between the Old M3 and S5, as far as power and price go.

First, that 6 feel like an V8. Second, it produces plenty of power, with *supossedly" no lag, just like an V8.

It's more about the output than whats inside, cause you can have an I4 with a nice turbo and will overrun an V8. If you go like that than the 335i cheats since it has turbos? I mean it's not an I6, is it? Just the I6 alone would only get 250hp, not 300+++. Right?

You didn't bother running (a few years ago) the M3 (6 cylidres) against any other car in it's class (audi, MB etc) although they where having V8? Cause the M3 was winning. Now it's a problem?

How would you rate a poor little I6 from .. Porsche? Cause it looks like it's better than many V8 out there. Or V10.

GermanNutGermanNut - 7/17/2007 1:12:43 PM
+5 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
I agree the comparison is kind of dumb, but then the RS5 is surely going to rip the new M3 since it is reported to be coming with a twin-turbocharged version of the RS4's 420 horsepower V8. The RS5 is reported to have 450 horsepower (30 more than the RS4) and 500 + lb/ft. of torque.

Can you say bye-bye BMW M3 in the straights.

Larry, bottom line is that Audi is increasing sales at a higher percentage than any other premium German luxury brand.

In fact, Audi can even outsell Mercedes-Benz worldwide this year depending on how the second 6 month numbers go.

BMW will easily be #1 globally but Audi will be moving into second place very shortly.

Audi is trailing Mercedes by 76,000 cars in this first 6 months, (575,000 MB vs. 509,000 for Audi) also the average price of a Mercedes is a least double the price of an Audi,
In my opinion sales are not a reason for judging an auto brand. For examples in the 70's and 80's Cadillac and Lincoln were the US market leaders, but I preferred BMW, and Mercedes products.

Hmm, the average price of a MB is not double the average price of an Audi.

And btw, Audi outsold BMW in Europe in the first half of this year.

You must be living on the Moon lately .. actually not lately, since ever.
Cause MB never had prices double the Audi prices. NEVER, not even close there :)
For any single Audi you can buy you can find a match in MB line within the same style/class with just a few thousands more.

I imagine the A5 is slow, like the current A4 3.0, 0-60 somewhere in the 6-second range.

Does anyone know what the engine will be in the A5?

A note on Car Mags:

Car and Driver always gets the fastest times front what I've seen, Motor Trend next, and Road and track is usually all over the place (quicker on some cars, much slower on others).

Basically, I go by the fasted posted time by whatever Mag has it. Weather, road conditions, etc. all have a hand in this as well all know.

Audi says 6.1. But it also says 5.1 for the S5 (both are 0-62 times), the A5 will probably get it done in the higher 5 second range.

this might be true if you average every model MB has, including the SLR's 450K price tag, to every model Audi has,But in the same class its a few thousand different.

Larry's smoking some good shit, or he has horrible math skills.

yes and no.
It will help with the launc so it might have alittle bit better of a 0-60 time, but it will also add weight, so who knows.

it will be more sure footed handling wise, but it does take away alittle bit of fun compared to RWD.

How come nobody mentioned the fact that Audi has said 0-62 will be 5.1 seconds. Which does not translate to 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. Why would audi say one thing and this guy say another?
