Canada to get BMW 335d and X5d in November -New Photos Included
During an internal client advisors training that was held in Vancouver, BMW Canada confirmed that the long-awaited BMW 335d and X5 xDrive35d will be available in November.
For the past few weeks, conflicting information were being published and I promised that I would not speculate on the launch date anymore for the U.S market, but we can assume that BMWNA will most likely release the diesels in the same time.
JM Wong, a BMW Client Advisor, shared with us his opinion on the BMW 335d.
"Personally, I find the 335d to be a bit boring because after driving the 335i, it is hard to drive a less power 3 series besides the M3 of course.
If a BMW client is looking for performance in a diesel, this is it. With 265hp and 425lb-ft of torque at 1,750 rpm, it makes the same kind of thrust as the 335i. I drove it pretty hard right of the start and find there is a little hesitation compared to the 335i.
What impressed me the most was the pull when you hit about 1,800 rpm you don’t feel like you are driving a diesel. As for the X5 xDrive35d, there is also a lot pull at about 1,800 rpm. It has more torque than my 2007 E70 X5 4.8i."
According to J M, BMW Canada expects to sell more X5 diesels than 3 series sedans, but of course, the pricing will most likely set the sales’ course. There were many petitions and complaints over the years regarding the U.S pricing vs. the canadian ones and I look forward to see again if the gap will be smaller or the “tradition” will stay.
Our article on whether the BMW 135i price will be lowered in Canada has some of the most informative and useful comments and if you live in Canada, I stronly suggest to scan through them.

I love the facelifted 3 series. The rear looks light years better than the current one.

When you look at the photo of the gray (old) one and the white (new) one parked on the side of the road, you can really see how much difference a very slight change in the taillight can make. The rear of the old one looks like it ate a bag of lemons; the new one looks beautiful without a lot of work. Hats off to BMW for straightening out Bangle's awful, ill-conceived designs.

Now, I will consider buying a 3-series, all they needed to do was fix a little thing like a taillight and now the car looks great. Good job BMW!

not really wowed by this...back end still doesn't look good, we're just happy it isn't what it was previously. don't know...nothing amazing about this. The original should never have had the orange in the headlight cluster so I don't see this as a facelift as much as relieving us of the cosmetic faux pas they left us with the first time around.

Will it have brake-energy regeneration and auto start/stop like in Europe? If so, the mileage should be great.

The X5d is alright, but its no better than an RXh.
According to www.lexus.co.uk and www.bmw.co.uk both cars have the same milage but the RXh is cleaner.
Granted the X5 can probably tow more, but I doubt any European has anything to tow.
The 335d gets about 12% higher mileage than the GSh (not the same class but the 3 should win easily), but is .7 sec slower (The 535d performance is about the same). I'm thinking this forum will be focusing more on mileage than acceleration since BMW wins the mileage category.
335d performance is on par with the Camry-hybrid, mileage and all.

Why wouldn't europeans have anything to tow?
And isn't a Camry-Hybrid a 4 cilinder?

Diesels get good real-world mileage and performance unlike hybrids. Case in point the Lexus LS 600h vs. Audi A8 diesel comparison made by AutoExpress magazine.
"But the LS wasn’t as fast as we expected. The hybrid system develops 439bhp, yet it didn’t accelerate any quicker than the Audi. This is largely due to the fact the Lexus weighs 465kg more, at 2,410kg. Still, if you look beyond the seven-second 0-60mph time, the LS is still a rapid car that builds speed effortlessly.
Where it really falls down is on a key part of its claimed benefits. Unless you treat it incredibly gently, you’ll never get close to Lexus’s claimed economy figure of 30.4mpg – we managed only 19.4mpg over the course of 1,100 miles."
-
"After covering more than 1,000 miles, the LS600h’s average consumption was only 19.4mpg. This is highly disappointing from a car that claims to achieve 30.4mpg."
"The Audi averaged a far more frugal 31.5mpg, proving that the A8’s light weight and diesel power are a better formula for real-world economy. This means a huge 624-mile range."

I drove a 335d and it was a beast. The torque was very nice, you could really feel it. It just didn't rev as high. As far as it being a little slower...I'm a grown damn man I don't race off at every light anymore. Its plenty fast for what I do.

The "insider" in this article is an idiot.
"'Personally, I find the 335d to be a bit boring because after driving the 335i, it is hard to drive a less power 3 series besides the M3 of course.
If a BMW client is looking for performance in a diesel, this is it.'"
WHAT?
"'As for the X5 xDrive35d, there is also a lot pull at about 1,800 rpm. It has more torque than my 2007 E70 X5 4.8i.'"
I had no idea!
Anyway, the new 3 looks great, well done BMW.

heyhuub,
What do mainland morons have to tow? Boats, 4wheelers, other toys that N.Americans can afford?
Yes, the Camry-hybrid is a 4cylinder. Just goes to show how wasteful Europeans are, always finding new ways to burn oil faster when the same can be achieved with a smaller engine.
Turbospyder,
You post an old article and you think I'd forget. I recall the last time someone tried to use it, I mentioned that there's no way they did this test unless is was majority highway driving (range and the # of days to do the test don't add up). Its the usual European bias. Either load down the hybrid with cement or drive them on the highway where the gas engine always has to run. Same old trick as the GSh vs anything diesel. Only Europe can't get the LSh to do good 0-60s, how convenient.
If you read the article, you'd also pick up on a bunch of double standards. Audi isn't as refined but since its a German car, its OK because thats what the driver wants. Same 0-60s, cleaner, same residual, better tax bracket and quieter but they don't bother mentioning this or the fact the LS weights 500kg more, they'd rather focus on the TDI's better highway mileage.

The Lexus might be cleaner at the assumed 30 mpg but not at the real-world 19 mpg. And here's some American "bias" to go with the European bias.
Autoweek on the LS 600h:
"Problem is, for a hybrid, this big Lexus turns in abominable mileage numbers. We couldn’t get close to its published EPA combined 21 mpg."
http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070627/FREE/70626008/1006/VEHICLEREVIEWS
-
MotorTrend on the LS600h:
"And despite being fitted with $3000 worth of active anti-roll bars, the LS 600hL seemed to roll as much or more than the other cars here, even when set to 'sport' mode (it's borderline nautical in 'comfort'). Charging hard up the hill depleted the battery quickly (actually, pressing the gas pedal on any type of road kills the battery quickly), and horsing the CVT through its eight virtual gear ratios with liberal doses of carpet-crushing throttle provoked an unseemly 'hybrid system overheat' warning. We didn't find the hybrid gear equal to sacrificing a golf-bag's worth of trunk space for and, after this session, all editors were ready to red-pencil the 600 badge down to a 500."

Pretty laughable if you think a CAmry-hybrid can keep up with the 280hp 335d.
I thought you where talking about some V6 Camry, but i guess you're just delusional.
