the LS460 is the green choice.
best mileage overall of all three LS models.
still don't see the point of the hybrid for $40,000 more.

no, some of us still don't. $40k extra for the same performance as the base car (performance that is worse in every statistic than every competitor), virtually identical fuel economy to the base car (no one buys $100k+ cars because of fuel economy), and a trunk that's half the size of all the other cars in the class (it's literally smaller than a Honda Civic trunk)? No, not seeing the point of that. If anything the negatives of this car just solidify the LS460 as a better choice, like "we're going to build something so pointless that it'll make the base model car seem like the value of the century".

BUCK, the 760 actually IS a higher performance version the 750. And there's options you can't get on the 750 that are on the 760, which is not the case with the LS. From my understanding the only thing the LS600h comes with that you can't get on the LS460 is all wheel drive, and options aside the eprformance figures for the two cars are virtually identical. So you're paying $40k extra for AWD, negligible fuel savings (like that would matter in this class anyway), and identical performance, and as a bonus you lose half the trunk (which is typically one of the main reasons someone buys a huge car in the first place). Awesome. Where do I sign up?

You beat me to the punch guy, but damn, I never get tired of being right.

One point that everyone (including me) overlooked is that the LS motor is 221hp while the GS motor is 197hp. Pretty amazing considering the LS has to compensate for 4 cylinders while the GS only has to cover 2.

You can also note that the only V12 that will outrun the LSh is the twinturbo V12 from MB.

All the while still weighing over 5200lbs. Can't wait to see what it does with smaller, more powerful batteries.

Here's the original test of the V8s. Note the A8 has the best braking at 171ft. The LSh outweighs it by 700lbs and matches the distance. So much for (as someone else put it) the Lexus' crisco lathered rotors. As we said, Lexus will correct it.

The problem here is that Lexus said that is a V12 compeititor and we all know that Mercedes is the V12 in question. Lexus has never even acknowledged Audi so that A8 W12 has never mattered to them. The car has the same acceleration up to a point as the LS460L with a lot more weight for a lot more money, yet the LS460L gets better MPG figures. Again, what is the point of this car? The LS460L has never, ever matched the factor numbers which makes it and this 600 version nearly a dead heat in performance so the 600 version is pointless because it will take years and years to recoup the huge initial investment over the LS460L, if you ever could. The fact remains that it doesn't provide the V12 performance of a S600, it isn't even close and C&D says that clearly: "unless the V-12 in question is in a Mercedes-Benz twin-turbo model, and in that instance, Lexus should expect to get its butt kicked". That says it all right there. The only advantage is some extra MPG over a S600, yet we're talking about a 100K car so owners are pinching pennies to begin with. This car just like the LS460 has never, ever lived up to clueless hype offered here. Never.

The LS600hL is a great alternative to a loaded S550 at the same price or even the 760Li or A8L W12, but the S600 is still head and shoulder above it in every way except MPG.

well actually the lexus numbers show like 5.3 ish while the regular LS460 is suppose to get 5.5 ish

its just a matter of whether they can replicate it.

You guys keep bringing the S600 in here. But if we go with naturally aspirated V12s like the bmw, and the audi, this beats it. Keep in mind this is the first V12 competitor from lexus, so you really cant expect them to take on a car thats almost double its price.

Yep it sure does beat the 760Li and A8L W12, but now all of sudden a Mercedes S600 isn't competition for a Lexus? Sounds like a cop-out to me. Uh..the LS600hL is a 100K car, the S600 costs like 140K, now unless I missed something that isn't nearly "double" anything.

This about whether or not testers can duplicate Lexus' numbers is bunk too for the simple reason that in most if not all cases testers exceed numbers given by German makes. That suggest to me that Lexus is giving hyped up numbers to say the least.

If Lexus can uses a V8 and batteries, then Mercedes can use turbos. Lexus said V12 performance, not "certain" V12 performance and since Mercedes is the focus with the LS model lineup the S600 is the car to beat for Lexus.

A great alternative to a loaded S550, for sure would make me think twice but compared to a S600, not even a contest.

If the the MB S600 cost up to $140K, than I might as well pay an extra 20K for the Bentley which has more prestige. With 552 hp and goe from 0-60 in 4.7-4.8 seconds.

You may as well because you'd have a better performing car with either the S600 or Continental Flying Spur. Either of them will smoke this Lexus which is supposed to have "V12" performance. The LS600hl was developed as an alternative to other V12 class automobiles. I don't think anybody from Lexus was making claims regarding superior acceleration times, only superior emission ratings. Again, these cars are for luxury, not Ferrari class performance.

Ahh...sounds like an excuse to me. Lexus said V12 performance and that means at least matching the leading V12 from their biggest rival. At best the LS600hL is an alternative to a loaded S550, not the V12 S600. If you can't perform like a S660 with superior emissions and fuel econ, then you aren't an alternative to one.

Yet another excuse making session. Lexus targets Mercedes in everything they do, now you're saying that performance isn't the goal of the LS600hL? Lexus said "V12 performance", not "some V12s" performance. The S-Class is the reason for the LS series and unless you can at least provide similar performance to the S600 then Lexus hasn't done squat. Since when does Lexus care about Audi or BMW in this class? They never have otherwise the LS460L and now LS600hL would be better handling. Quit making excuses for the car! It doesn't match all the V12 competition and it doesn't even come close to the main competitor, the bestseller in the V12 segment, the S600!

My gripe with Lexus is this.... there is no feelin, nothing special about it. Yes you can laden it with all the fancy gizmos and such like hybrids and self parking....but it doesn't feel special. Maybe this is because of its aesthetics. When I sat in an LS460, it felt plain...Yes the leather is nice, it sat well, but something was missing. Maybe the leather smell and the plastic smell of the new car reminds me of my friend's new Camry. There is still too much Toyota in here. And I am not saying Toyotas are bad, not by a long shot. They are just point a to point b cars, with excellent reliability and no frills in handling and such.
Now when I sit in a Mercedes or BMW there is a feeling. I can't explain why, there just is. Maybe because my senses don't sense it as another car. The BMW feels different. It does not feel like a MINI inside. Mercedes does not feel or smell like a Chrysler inside. It is hard to explain unless you really and truely have sat in all of these cars. I am a very open minded fanboy. I am a fanboy of all these cars, and I have a BMW 3 Series, but love the Lexus IS as well. So to all you lovers of cars out there I recommend to go to the dealer and try 'em for yourself, not go by a magazine, but by what you like. Choice is great!!!

IMO it's a beautiful car. I actually like most Lexuses more than the Mercedes competition at each level, and I've always liked the LS, but Everytime I see the S class, I realize that it's the most beautiful.

Wow, I didn't expect any more from any of the fanboys (both Lexus and German fanboys) in this blog, but it's getting old.

Nor did I expect the Edmunds test results to actually reflect many other publications- sometimes, Edmunds gets 0-60 times that are completely off-the-mark.

Yes, this car is quicker than the LS460L; however, isn't it only by about 0.1 sec?

The LS600hL is... nice. I don't see it fighting for the top of this class, as the LS460 does, though. It just doesn't seem as "ultimate" as the S600, W12 or 760Li.

The LS600's V8, on the highway, has to lug around an extra 800lbs the LS460 doesn't have (do the math).

MB V12 is a twinturbo, yet the LS600hL from real tests, is only 1/2 second slower. Autoweek could only get 5sec from the S600, MB listed it at 4.5

This is nothing special.

Mercedes, BMW, and Audi have been making fast big sedans for years.

The S55, S63, S65 (all AMG) all do sub 5-second 0-60 in less than 5 seconds. The S600 (non AMG) version does it in 4.5 seconds. Some are V8s, some are V12s.

Mercedes handles better and loosk better.

Why buy this Lexus over a Mercedes?

BMW has their 765 variant and Alpina B7 that go sup 5 second 0-60 as well, for about 120k. The BMW out handles the Lexus.

Why by this Lexus over a BMW?

I could go on with other large sedans like the S8.

Hybrids are a much cleaner technology, that will be Lexus's focus. Many of the other brands are trying to jump on the bandwagon, but are finding it very difficult to duplicate.

Hey! Looks like the usual suspects are back defending their purchases. Awesome.

(i) Seriously, will people stop disputing half second zero-to-sixty differentials, a Honda Accord V6 does it in six and a half.

(ii) Most of these Lexus vs. German Car brand disputes are useless posts. Lets find a common ground here. For example, the new Ford Focus is shit.

(iii) Lexus drivers can burn out their keyboards blasting german makes, however, I continue to wait for a Japanese luxury brand that offers their highest displacement in a manual transmission (save the new Lexus IS-F)

(iv) Japanese reliability is consistently tops. Lexus builds a quality car, and probably one of the most reliable. It's no mistake that Toyota is on top. Perhaps that's why I don't drive one, I want a more niche vehicle.

BMW 118 1.8L diesel 144g/km 52mpg

The Germans can make diesels for 50 years, doesn't mean they're any good.

I'm glad these numbers came out, of course. The LS600hL is not meant to appeal to value-seekers, which is why I still don't understand why people insist on claiming the LS460 is a better buy. Of course it is! Just as the 550 is a better buy than the 600.

The 'Hybrid' badge on this Lexus was placed there to function just as the 'V12' badges on the 600 were meant to function: it gives you some bragging rights. The 'V12' badge lets you claim a bigger and smoother engine. The 'Hybrid' badge lets you claim that you're friendly to the environment (regardless of whether it may actually be or not, the fact is, it IS more friendly to the environment than the V12s this car is up against).

If you say so, I don't see any difference between the Aygo/Yaris. Like you guys know anything other than small cars.
Toyota shows the Yaris is 0-60 in 11.8sec, not the pathetic number you made up. It's also about ($)3,500 pounds cheaper too.
From what I've read, the diesel is a Toyota/Peugeot job.

Settle down lad, you haven't proven anything (and likely never will).
1. Do they still stell the Lupo? Last I heard, VW couldn't make a profit on it so they killed it.
Secondly, the Yaris is just as good, so big deal. From the Peugeot site, I couldn't find a 107 w/ a diesel, only the 1007.
Eventhough I wasn't aware about the Aygo class/Peugeot thing, the Yaris is still a good enough match.

2. I don't know what you're smoking, but the GS450h only loses by 2mpg to the 525i SE (37.8 vs 35.8mpg). The GS easily outruns it, but that's a given.

Since you offer no proof and just make things up, it's far too easy to show you're wrong.
Edmonds, Motortrend, Automotive all failed to mention observed fuel economy for the 530i. Just a sample.

BMW can claim all they want. Try digging up some real world numbers.

In that case, Lexus claims 35.8mpg or 7.9L/100km in the UK. Only bested by an engine 1L smaller and the GS still runs circles around it.

Stop trying to pretend you know anything. Your links are basically advertisements, not road tests. Fool.

Lexus ALWAYS understates their 0 - 60 times by at least .5 seconds. Here are the results of the 5 Top Luxury Cars in this test which was reported in the January Issue of Car and Driver. Please note these tests were all done on the same day at about the same time and at the same altitude. The results reflect the average of 3 runs and all cars are the 2007 vintage.

Mercedes S550 5.6, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.1 (Benz show 5.4 in their specs)
BMW 750iL 5.7, 0 - 60 quarter mile in 14.2
Jag XJ Super 6.0 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.5
Lexus LS460L 6.2 0 - 60 quarter mile 14.6
Audi A8 6.8 0 - 60 quarter mile 15.2

Note that Lexus, as usual, is more than the 5.4 the manufacturer CLAIMS to get by .8 seconds.

Also note the LS430 (prior model the LS460 replaced) was rated at 295 HP and was actually 278 when Lexus corrected their rating. And there were no refunds or apologies from the so-called "quality" car company. ABC - Always Be Careful what you buy from the Lexus people.....
