Comparison:EVO X vs rivals
1st place - Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X
2nd place - Audi S3
3rd place - Subaru WRX STI
Meet the Mitsubishi Revolution X – sorry, Evolution X. In reality, the first version is probably the more accurate: this car isn’t simply an update of previous models – it’s all-new from the ground up.

The firm has been working on the model since before the launch of the Evo VIII in 2003, and it has plenty of innovative touches – not least a double-clutch gearbox, stiffer chassis, overhauled 4WD, more torquey engine and better handling than ever. In Mitsubishi’s own words the Evo X “takes things to a whole new level”.

So what is Subaru’s answer? A deadly rival for the last 15 years (the first Impreza Turbo and Lancer Evo I were launched within months of each other), it has taken an equally radical approach with its latest model by making a hatchback.

On paper these two are very evenly matched, but the Impreza is nearly £7,000 cheaper. Does that mean this test is over before the cars have even turned a wheel?

Not if the Audi S3 has anything to do with it. Mitsubishi is claiming to have moved the Evo upmarket, but it’ll be pushed to prove as well built and good to live with as the S3, which may just have a surprise in store for its two opponents.

All have strong rally heritage, hi-tech 4WD systems and punchy turbo engines. Is this the perfect recipe for driving fun? We took them to mid-Wales to find out...

The EvoX is a great machine. The only thing I don't like is how the grill area slants forward (also a major complaint I have with the Dodge Charger and 05+ Mustangs).

That's classic mitsu style, good for brand recognition. "Shark Nose" as they call it.

Great comparison. After all these are some of the best rally cars out there.

An R32 would have made more sense. Yet it still falls short of the HP numbers the other 2 have.

Motor Trends comparison between the Evo, STI, and the 335XI, is even more ridiculous.

"That doesn’t hold the Audi back in a straight line. At 261bhp and 350Nm, it gives away 31bhp and 57Nm to the Evo X, but at 1,455kg, it’s 135kg lighter. As a result, its power to weight ratio is virtually identical. Longer gearing meant it wasn’t quite as quick as the Mitsubishi from 0-60mph with a time of 5.6 seconds, but better aerodynamics ensured the Audi was only a tenth of a second behind when they passed 100mph, recording 13.8 seconds. So the S3 is much quicker than you might expect."

That's what it's doing here.
And don't get started on the twisties where it outpaces the 135i and can keep up with the last gen STI.

The Mazdaspeed3 is faster than the S3 to 60. Yet it lacks AWD, thus, no comparison test against the Evo/Sti will be seen.

The STI is the softy here, the S3 is harder sprung then the Impreza.

Yeah, The S3 and R32 always seems to be compared to the EVO/STI. Those cars shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as the EVO/STI IMO.

heyhuub

just wondering where you got the idea that an s3 can hang with a 135 in the twisities?? Just test drove a 135 and its hard to compare it to anything that audi produces. I have never driven the s3, but i have the S4 and it doesnt come close to offering the performance that the 135 does. please elaborate.

heyhubb ... what outpaces the 135? I drove the Subaru WRX STI & it definitely doesnt out pace the 135 on a track. I drove both back to back on the same course, an although the WRX is nice there is too much body roll compared to the 135.

but EVO X is faster on a track - not only than 135i but also M3:
evo x-152,92sec
M3-154,2sec
135i-156,34sec
c63-158sec
is-f - 158,6sec

M3 is also very fast car both have great suspension but i think evo is so fast mostly becouse of it awd - torque vectoring . and evo also have advantage becouse of twin clutch transmission , we will see when M3 also switch to twin clutch .

Seems like the S3 isn't as soft as you people say it considering it does these times with less power then the others.

Heyhuub:
this depend also on what track . on the winding road like motor trend track evo x almost hasn`t competitor . audi S3 quattro is worser AWD system than EVO that`s why it`s slower on winding road:
"For instance, you never really feel the 4WD system working. The S3’s natural stance is to understeer once the limit of grip is reached"
this i also hear from other sources . impreza sti also has natural stance to understeer but not as much as audi quattro - it`s caused mostly LSD-torsen or other LSDs . active diffs are much better .

BMW is not EVO's rival. not a chance.
don't forget EVO and STI are rally cars. i'd love to see you throw a BMW into a rally course and manage to finish before it breaks apart.

Yeah, they always seem to hand pick their "Mickey Mouse" tracks to promote their particular brands...

EVO isn't a BMW competitor. Modified Economy cars complete with budget interiors aren't BMW's competition.
