Edmunds' Hybrid Sedan Comparison Test: Toyota Camry Hybrid vs. Nissan Altima Hybrid vs. Saturn Aura Green Line
Toyota proved it's got the fuel economy game wrapped up, as the Camry produced the best combined mileage of our test group with 43.2 mpg over both loops — 44.5 mpg in the city and 42.6 mpg on the highway. The Altima's fuel economy in the city actually proved marginally better than the Camry's at 47.3 mpg, but its 38.1 mpg on the highway dropped its combined rating to 40.1 mpg.

The Aura wasn't even close. Its combined fuel economy was just 26 mpg, largely as a result of its 18.9 mpg in city driving — where it doesn't benefit from true electric-only propulsion like the Camry and Altima. On the highway loop, the Aura produced 31.5 mpg.

Second, we calculated observed fuel economy over our entire time with each car, just as we do with all of our road test vehicles. Though this data isn't gathered in identical controlled conditions, it provides a useful idea of the fuel economy each car is likely to produce in the hands of the average drivers during everyday driving. The Camry again came out on top, producing 32.6 mpg. At 31.5 mpg, the Altima is a close 2nd, while the Aura lags behind at 24.5 mpg.

omg, and yet the GM dealers ask their customers to test drive a Camry that's in their show rooms as a way to compare to the Aura or other cars?

There's just no comparisons to be done there and this is YET another prove. A hybrid that produces 18.9 mpg in city? my V8 makes that already!!
What a shame I swear for GM to take an advanced technology and produce garbage out of it. Unbelievable!

It should be noted that the Altima hybrid uses the same setup the Camry hybrid does. I am curious to know how they reach the conclusion that the Altima interior is in any way better than the Camry interior? I disagree.

Posting the fuel economy that they got in two weeks of real driving, not some set up tests.

Hybrid is a fad that will die in 10 years. Diesel will take over, then the technology will move on to hydrogen, so I ask the question....

Wtf are we even comparing hybrids for? They produce more waste than the amount of gas THE EXPERTS CLAIM that they get.

As I said, Hybrid technology is a joke.

Thats exactly my point. Hybrid Tech the way it is now is a fad--it cannot stand on its own. It will be incorporated into a non-gasoline engine in 20 years.

I sounds like you work for GM man. I'm suprised you took your time to write such BullS41T to defend the very poor job that GM has done once again.

Interesting...
For comparison, a VW Passat 2.0 tdi 170 manual gets 38 US combined (using the European cycle), 30 in the city and 45 on the highway, and does 0-62 in 8.6.

Officially, a Camry hybrid gets 40 City and 38 highway, and does 0-60 in 8.6...
There doesn't appear to be much difference between the two, except that, if you drive more highway, the Passat is better, if you drive more city, the Camry is better.

The Aura is a first effort for GM and it doesn't compare well here on the basis of fuel economy alone. If you truly factor in price however, this is a great example of why hybirds are very dtrong money savers. For the 5-6K dollar premium over non-hybrid sedan in 7 years you will pay for it as long as you don't need to change the batteries.

Without question, the Toyota is a quality product. The other two aren't.

the Aura can't even compare to the NON-hybrid camry and altima. WHY is it EVEN BUILT?

ONLY gm loyalists would consider it. it'll have as much of an impact as the gm "hybrid" pickups!

not to mention the bland malibu hybrid which gets a similar estimate.
