We know you want the numbers and we're not going to waste your time.

Neither is Nissan. Its 2009 GT-R hits 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, quicker than the last Dodge Viper, Corvette Z06 and Porsche 911 Turbo we tested. Keep your foot pinned, and after another tap on the upshift paddle it will clear the quarter-mile in 11.6 seconds at more than 120 mph.

We know this because we've just returned from Japan where we tested a privately owned GT-R on an airstrip outside Tokyo. The car we tested was a Japanese-spec example with 1,500 break-in kilometers on its odometer. It's owned by Japanese journalist Jun Nishikawa and packs the same hardware the U.S. car will get: a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 that generates at least 473 horsepower and 434 pound-feet of torque. It had the same six-speed dual-clutch automated manual gearbox and the same adjustable dampers which, by now, you've read plenty about.

What you likely haven't heard about is this: launch control. Despite its bold 3.5-second 0-60-mph claim, Nissan has been keeping this little bit of technological wizardry a secret. Test a GT-R in the homeland, however, and the need for confidentiality is quickly overwhelmed by the need for speed.

What are the badgewhore who have doubted Nissan could pull it off has to said now? Nissan GT-R went from 0-60 in 3.3s that is faster than the 911 turbo and Z06.

The GT-R is a epic performance car. Nobodys doubting that, most of the negative's posted about this car revolver around how it looks, which is subjective anyway. What do you want everyone to do? lexus, why would you compare a gt-r to ANY bmw. bmw doesn't even make an exotic right now. just about everything bmw makes shares a platform with a sedan. apples + oranges.

Badge Whore? For someone who's handle is LEXUS that is pretty ironic.

Why would you buy a Lexus GS vs Toyota Avalon, Lexus ES vs Toyota Camry, Lexus RX vs Toyota Highlander the list goes on, the only difference between the two(besides the obvious BADGE and Price) is cosmetic and convenience features. The powertrain, chassis etc. are ALL the same.

No one doubts that the GTR is/was going to be a great car, but no one who wants to buy a "Supercar" is going to look at the GTR. Sorry. The 911 was Nissan's benchmark, not it's demographic competition no matter what Carlos, you or Kazutoshi say.

Hey the GTR is almost as fast as the Enzo too, I can imagine an Enzo owner trading his car in for a GTR. That's a funny thought.

Actually i don't remember S4 saying anything bad about the GT-R

Only person i remember who consistently had to challenge every article on the GT-R was kaisersozedude.

Fact Check:

The LEXUS GS-Series/Toyota Aristo are based on the same Mid-Sized RWD platform as the JDM Toyota Crown-Series.

NOT Toyota's FWD platform which is used for the Camry/Highlander/Windom/Harrier/Lexus ES/Rx Series.

ok, first of all the nissan gtr, is 900 pounds heavier than a corvette z06, and has less power. good old physics rules here in this universe. this car should not be as fast as a corvette z06. and yeah i know about dual clutch and 4 wheel drive, but formula one and indy and nascar dont use 4wd so this is pretty much a moot point.

all this is, is good old manufacturer and gtr enthusiast propoganda. remember the dodge stealth and mitsu gt4000 back in the early 90's? they had 0-60 times of 4.9 secs, weighed 3900 pounds and by the mid 90's were only running 5.5 or 6 secs to 60mph. same thing with the toyota supra of that time.

and i agree with th cost of ownership, jsell. i also think this propoganda will help the dealerships achieve maximum mark-up for these cars. there is no way any one here in the U.S. will ever buy one for the $70,000 price tag. more like 100-120K...i guarantee it. this makes the Z06 pretty attractive....

by the way, has anybody seen the way all that stuff is crammed into that engine bay? RIDICULOUS! WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THOUSANDS OF BUCKS FOR SIMPLE MAINTENANCE!lol

Such ignorance is dangerous,

Formula 1 & Indy Cars have serious Downforce Apparel placed on them to force the vehicle down unto the road thus negating the need for AWD

Nascar Cars just go round in Very Large Ovals so the AWD advantade is again negated.

AWD has an advantage at LAUNCH // CORNERING // WET & ICY Conditions

RWD had the advantage for Max Speed and ability to transfer more of the Engine Power to the Driven Wheels so less Drivetrain Loss

Also High Performance AWD has always posed a problem because of how you channell all that power to the Front Wheels which also have the job of Turning

Remember the comical turning circle of the Impreza WRC and Mitsubishi Evo FQ400, Audi RS6 turning circle was also laughable.

While I think this is a terrific car and will please all those who can find one to buy, I don't for a minute think it is an end all. Porche won't rest until it is back on top and then Nissan will update, Dodge's Viper and Chevy's Corvette team will be in the mix. No doubt that isn't a bad thing. Competition is ALWAYS good it causes improvements in all areas.

But as for hype. This car IS still overhyped. People have been making claims about this car for well over a year at least, some said it would come in w/ its current specs yet be under 3400 lbs in weight. Also I think Nissan is under rating that engine. It seems like MORE than a stretch to say that 480 hp can motivate a 3800 lb car to the times the GT-R achieves.

That being said kudos to Nissan, and like everyone here I can't wait for the TopGear episode to see the Stig beat on one and find out what times it can post on their track.

Yes, it's official. I think it well get ceramic brakes in addition to stiffer chassis/suspension, more power and lighter weight. It'll be out in Japan end of '08 if my memory serves me right.

"It's even quicker than the Porsche 911 Turbo Tiptronic, but not by much. The German hits 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and blasts through the quarter-mile in 11.6 at 118.5 mph. Due to their lack of all-wheel drive, the Dodge Viper and Corvette Z06 are held back by traction limitations. Despite its 600-hp V10, the last Viper coupe we tested reached 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and finished the quarter-mile 11.8 at 125.3 mph. The Corvette Z06 isn't even close. Once impressive, its 4.1-second 0-60-mph run and 12-second quarter-mile at 121.8 mph are now well off the pace, which is why Chevy is creating the supercharged Corvette ZR1."

O-60 is irrelevant for supercars like this. It's the 0-200 and 0-300 sprint that REALLY matters

it's pure logic that a AWD car will get much quicker off the line. But that doesn't mean the 600 hp is slower! In fact it's quicker! O-200 it's quicker. the Z06 does 0-200 in 11,7 seconds, which is quicker than the porsche.

i hate these useless reviews. 1/4 mile is fun, but a bit pointless.

besides, you can easily chiptune a 997 turbo to 530 hp without any mods. it will run over 300 kmh and it will be quicker than the nissan (which isn't tuner friendly at all --> big mistake)

in fact I love the GT-R as an engneering masterpiece, but it's no skyline like the R34, R33, R32, ..

the block is very strong, so that is good

but all the rest isn't

- turbo's integrated in exhaust manifold
- unhackable ecu
- very complex gearbox
- very complex computers everywhere

there is no deniying that this thing won't be as good as the R34, the last real skyline in my opinion

95-that's KPH, not MPH.

It would take the Bugatti 20+ seconds to reach 200 MPH.

Air Drag is very difficult to overcome.I believe there was a topgear episode which stated the bugatti needed 250 HP or so to reach 150 mph and the rest of the 700+ HP just to get past the next 100MPH for a top speed of 253.

Agreed the people @ Edmunds are morons, but I'm inclined to believe the GT-R is as capable as this test concluded. I've never questioned this cars capability at all in the performance department.

Although I don't understand what "Lexus" is talking about when he states the Nissan is once again the "king" when the 911 still clearly reigns supreme.

Yes the GT-R is maybe faster than the Turbo but is slower & much less capable than a GT2 911, not to mention we'll see a slightly updated Turbo in a few months which will quickly fix Porsches nightmare from Japan.

Not to mention the fact that the Porsche completes all track & field events with ease in a much nicer suit than GT-R's, & with a lot more refinement, comfort, & other luxuries that match & make up for it's almost doubled price tag.

this car is a freakin beast. this car has set the new benchmark. theres nothin that can touch this car for the price and performance except the trailing zo6. ive never heard so many lame excuses of y this car doesnt live up to the hype. heres a couple new ones:

you are missing the point.

edmund's article shows that the viper and corvette are slower than the gt-r but in real world they aren't. the GT-r maybe quicker to 60 but show the viper some space and the extra 120 hp + shitload of torque + lighter weight will embarras the nissan

But there is no need for you to compare it to other cars in EVERY article! That's what brings out the fanboy in me and so many other people! The GT-R is amazing... but that doesn't mean the Turbo, R8 and the rest can't be, too! Let us appreciate this car in peace for once.

These hand assembled engines with that turbo setup are expensive problems to tweak. I think thats why they made it harder to hack the ECU. They dont want to have to replace a bunch of blown turbos/engines.

Nissan sells the GT-R for $70 grand, but they're taking a big hit on the car. The car should be at $200 grand, but they've got this point to prove that they can build a fast car for $70 grand which is bullcrap.

And last but not least the GT-R is pure 100% ugly.

Not a sexy line on it. The thing has all the styling of a suitcase.

Just as stupid as those that think they will be able to buy this car for $70,000. Unless the Nissan dealerships agreed to waive there right to dealer markup on this car you're probably going to spend north of $85,000 for this car. Remember the cardinal rule

Nice time. Never like Edmund reviews, but this car is a beast. Great to see cars pushing the envelope for others. It only makes others push their engineering to the limits. Would have liked to see a higher top end speed though. perhaps in the 200mph.

there is some logic to that, realistically no one can go as fast this car will go so if all it offered were speed it would be pointless. but regardless of the hypothetical(ive never driven one to know if all it offers is speed) this is impressive for the price, and in general, it seems like it would be generating more hp for a 0-60 in 3.3 seconds than the claimed hp. This car seems to set a new benchmark

Why is everyone on this site comparing this to the 911 turbo? The real people who are interested in purchasing this car, myself included, are comparing it to a regular 911, which is closer in price. After owning a Boxter S, Carrera S I am done with Porsche. My brother has a 997 Turbo and he is even more excited about the GT-R than I am. I guess once you own a Porsche for a few years, the exciment subsides, it's the same thing over and over. The GT-R, honestly I thought it was one ugly mfer. But when I saw it at the LA auto show, what a difference. This kind actually had a big presence. On the way home in my 911, it felt very old and outdated. To drive it on daily basis, it is torture.

Because I need AWD. At least for now.

Soon, I'll be getting some sort of Audi or BMW AWD sedan/coupe, and perhaps a C2S Cabrio will come a year later. That's what makes the most sense.

Except it doesnt even have a windshield, and you need to also get their custom helmet just to drive it. Neat car, but yeah. going 200mph without even a windshield just sounds like youd be scraping bugs off your tailor made leather jacket after ever ride.

Right now Nissan is on top of the hill. They have built a car that will out perform cars that cost double and triple what the GTR costs. It's an amazing acheivement and Nissan should be congradulated.Now doubt that Porsche will one up it soon. However even if it does there is simply no better "Bang For The Buck" on the market today. It has typically Japanese styling. You're either going to love or hate it. But if you want supercar performance at a semi reasonable price this is it.

The fastest time ever for a Porsche 911 Turbo from 0-60 was by Motortrend. They got the 911 Turbo to 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds and through the quarter mile in 11.4 seconds.

That is currently faster than the 3.3 and 11.6 seconds for the GT-R.

However, Edmunds was the test that got the GT-R from 0-60 in 3.3 and through the quarter in 11.6 seconds. Edmunds has consistently one of the slowest, if not the slowest, 0-60 times of any major publication.

Look for Car and Driver to better Edmunds time by a good 0.2 seconds, thereby reducing the GT-R's 0-60 mph time to 3.1 seconds. That means the GT-R will have a faster recorded 0-60 time than the 911 Turbo.

You may love it, you may hate it. There is one thing that can't be denied, this car has performance to match cars that cost double and even triple its price.

It is up to people to decide whether they think &70K is an appropriate amount of money to spend on a Nissan.

I think that people would tend to buy this more as a "GT-R" rather than as a "Nissan". I mean, look at the Ford GTO. Speding well over 100k for a Ford sounds kind of strange but for a GTO sounds to start a lot better.

I think Nissan has done a pretty good job with the GT-R by overcoming lot of engineering challenges.

The thing is that with an AWD you will get better traction in cornering and more *available* traction force at *all four* wheels that is spread out for better gripping while driving. If they've done their homework and it seems like they've done it, than with the proper tranny, a launch system, and an optimum loss of torque to the wheels, than AWD is better. On the other hand, RWD will put out more torque to the wheels because there are less components between the engine and the wheels. The down-side to that is that your chance of a wheel-spin are greater. So, depending on the situations, IMO, I would opt for an AWD system because it will outperform a RWD around the track and not just 0-60mph. 0-60mph gap between AWD and RWD does not tell much about the advantages/disadvantages of both systems. But it's obvious that all around, the AWD will be a better performer!

They tested it, and reported their numbers.You havent. If they got these and everyone else got 4.0 secs + in their reviews, wouldnt that COMPLETELY ruin edmunds credbility? It may already be lost to you, but im sure theyre well aware of what it would do to them.

I think top end speed is also big. ie, Mclaren F1, F40, F50, Murcielago, etc. The 0-60 times are great, especially for its time, but they are not the greatest. however, they have some of the highest top end speed.

Launch Control? Does the Porsche 911 even come with launch control? And this makes the GT-R mighty!! A good software program and it's the mighty GT-R. Well let me bring some of you down to earth for a minute. A stock Corvette Z06 has done the quarter mile in 10.98 seconds at 130 MPH...with no launch control and with only two wheels!

You are right about the traction but what bothers me is that it leaves no room for driver skill when using launch control. For example

"..The computer holds the engine at 4,500 rpm and waits for you to lift your left foot off the brake pedal..."

If that is the case then everyone will have the same 1/4 mile times if all you have to do is take your foot off the brake...actually no I'm wrong...If you weigh less than 180 then you'll beat me...I'm 210. The 40 lb difference is your advantage...where's the fun in that!

I think the GT-R is a great car and I like the looks. And 3.3 sec 0-60 has got to be as exciting as riding a motorcycle. However, the one rub is that I would like to push a car like this to the limits and it is clear that to do that, you will have to spend some extra $$$ on upgrades (new brakes, new tires, etc) and keep a parts bin and mechanic handy.

And for that reason, I prefer the 0-60 in 4.5-4.8 sec you get at the limit with an M3 with the ability to drop it off at the dealer for free scheduled service. I could care less if I didn't have the fastest car in Manhattan! I could care less if someone paid less to have the faster Japanese car in Manhattan! What I do know is that mid 4 sec 0-60 is respectable and in an M3 you can do it every day and not worry about replacement parts.

And I own a E46 M3, push it to the limit every chance I get and have never had a problem with it. It is 5 years old and drives like it did the day I got it.

From this review, all you jokers that push that GT-R to the limit, it will be in the shop more than on the street. And there are some folks, younger folks, that don't have a problem with that.

I will say though that if I had an extra $70k to blow after purchasing the new M3 I plan to get I would get a GT-R as a weekend day/track car. Because like I said in the beginning, 0-60 in 3.3 seconds has to be an amazing feeling.

I love this car and its performance, and it elicits such polarizing responses.

From a performance perspective, it tends to remind me of the 335i. Its numbers suggest to me that it has even more hp's then they're reporting. Almost 3900lbs and only 473 hp, sounds alot like a somewhat weaker M5 yet the M5 w/launch control can't come close to the performance of the GT R. And wait until the factory tweaked GT R comes out sometime later.

I just want to remind everyone up here that this is the base Nissan GT-R we are talking about. More reviewer will soon follower, the GT-R will probably go from 0-60 in 3.1s.

Just wait for the Nissan GT-R V-spec rumor to have 550+ hp under it hood, and is also lighter too. It will do over 200mph for sure, and 0-60 in 2.7s time or less.

They did a test, and it said the Nissan GT-R has 475 hp at all four wheels. It performance is Unreal for a sportcar that cost only $70k

El34, how is the real estate business going in Irvine? hope everything is fine with you bro. I definitely agree that the Nissan GT-R should be a six figure car. But for those of us who are buying it want it to stay at $70k.

But no worry, because Nissan will probably rise the lighter and more powerful GT-R V-spec to $100K. They have to to bring the price up market to compete with the like of Lexus LF-A and Honda NSX.

The GT-R V-spec will be much faster and will do 0-60 in 2.7 or less. So I'm sure many true auto ethuasist will drop $100k to get it. Heck, if I have the money I would too, this an ICON were talking here.

I hope Santa got my letter asking him for a Red Nissan GT-R and some candy..for Christmas ;-)

Good job Nissan. Goes to show you don't need 24 cylinders, 10 litres and 2mpg to blow the doors off of other cars.

Evo MR FQ400 0-60 in 3.5
GT-R now 0-60 in 3.3

Even if the NSX or LF-A beats or comes close to this number, it won't be the same since they'll be 10 cylinder engines. However, if the HT-FS does, then that would definitely rival this.

all speculation, but there may be 2 versions...one with a naturally aspirated v6 variant to compete with the Z range, then possibly a twin turbo v6. all speculation tho...but definitely great for consumers

Come on man so your saying that you let your m3 loose every chance you get and hit that limited 155 mph mark?? Please. And you live in manhattan? chances are you never drive that thing over 30.
Also, about pushing the gt-r to the limit, nobodys going to drive it at 197 or whatever the top speed is on the street. if i had the gt-r id drive it like a normal car...sure id launch it if some dude in an s4 or m3 or haha 911 turbo gave me a look at the line. There are many cars with high HP in 2009 . It does seem that Edmunds seems to LOOOOOOOVE the GTR . In fact Edmunds seems to write favorable reviews for a lot of Nissan cars .

Let's look at the list .
Audi R10
Viper
ZR1
GTR
Vantage RS

All of these cars have 500+ and as high as 650HP
and they all want to beat the 997 Turbo .

But can they keep up with the Porsche Tuners ?

Nope . They can't . In fact many Porsche dealerships even have a "motorsports" department offering enough HP and reliability all the way up to 700HP on pump fuel .

Let's see the cars . Let's drive the cars .

In the meantime I got estimated 600HP in my 997tt and the GTR may just be nice enough to replace one of my OTHER cars .

We'll see .

If anybody on this blog - through some chance of fate- found themselves on an unguarded railway crossing, a triple locomotive train bearing down on them and less than 3.4 seconds to get the hell out of there- what car would they want to be in?

Mclaren F1's don't count because they have less than 2 inches of ground clearance and even tracks embedded in concrete are at times 4" deep.

One thing that needs to be taken into consideration... Nissan dealerships have to send their GM and an ASC certified Master technician to Japan just to be trained on performing maintenance on these cars. Also, the dealerships have to install special lifts just to be able to work on these cars. With that said, that should make this car very costly to work on, with not many dealerships in the US willing to put up the kind of money it takes to work on these cars in return for the ability to sell 1 or maybe 2 of these cars, with only 1500 slated for production. Good luck with your $300 oil changes and tires, brakes, tuneups and who knows what else. Awesome figures for a 70k car by any means. Just saying that it is probably going to be a lot closer to 911 Turbo money when all is said and done for total cost of ownership.

In term of the total package, handling, performance and price wise, Nothing is even close to the GT-R. For only $70k you get a sportcar that run the famous German track in 7:38s and goes from 0-60 in 3.3s or less.

Definitely the anticipated sportcar of the Century and it definitely live up to it hype. This is truely the "Fire breathing Godzilla" from the land of the Rising Sun.

So you defend the GT-R, which I respect and completely agree with...

But why do you have to bash the Porsche?

I really don't see the point. It is agreed on this site that the Turbo is gorgeous. If you don't like it, don't write about it, because nobody will agree with you.

Stopping being such an idiot, and stop your whinnin. If you anyone up here can afford the New Nissan GT-R for $70, I think they should be able to afford $300 oil change.

@S4, stop being so offended because I said the truth about Porsche being Ugly. Make people would agree with me, that the Porsche is Ugly.

Porsche is known for making Incredible Performance super sportscar like the 911/turbo and GT3. They are NOT known for making beautiful car.
