Entry-level BMW? The 335i tops 50 Grand... and beyond!

It's kinda 1-step forward 1-step back with the Bimmer. They really are a "luxury good" more than a car. Luxury goods tend to price themselves at a pain-point threshhold on purpose, to keep their exclusivity up. People like me looking for BMW to "come down" are always frustrated because BMW keeps the price high on purpose. Even with the Japanese cars at BMW's heels, BMW is keeping their prices at the highest possible level to stay exclusive. The only way to really make out on BMW is to lease one of their cars because they subsidize their leases pretty generously. Of couse, you have to agree to rent the car like a hotel room and not buy it. For people who put the quality of their car over other important things in life, it won't really matter. They have set aside BMW money and will put it down on whatever's next coming out of the factory. (Wish I could be one of those people!)

It looks to me they're dropping the 325s from their lineup. Only the 325Ci is left. If they do drop them and the cheapest ones start at $38K U.S., they're going to lose a lot of customers (the pretenders who could barely afford a 325). Unless they plan on pricing the 1-series at that level (higher price on a cheaper car).

It's a bit confusing too because in Canada, we don't have the 328s anymore, they were renamed 330.

I don't know, for an extra $10K, you might as well get an M3. Or if you did, you're scratching your head now wondering why you did.

Audi A4 can top $50,000 (and its not even the new model)

Mercedes Benz C-class does top $50,000 (Again, old model)

Hell, A VW Passat now costs 40 grand (?????????)

The previous Lexus IS300 was fully loaded at $35,000......now $47,000

Word is the G35 optioned up will now go over 40 grand as well

As cars get faster, more luxurious and more techy, there prices go through the roof.

This is happening everywhere, dont single out BMW.

-you're the industry leader
-you're the most expensive
-you introduce a mid-year refresh with a price jump usually reserved for a new model intro (just the horsepower changed let's be real)

you get singled out. That's how it is, dude!

By the way potato chip, you're pushing the Passat to max-options. If we push the 335i to max options, we're looking at $60 grand. So, what's your point then? You can get a 5-series for $60 grand. You can get a Porsche for $60 grand. Is $60 grand not a lot of money anymore?

Sure, price increases are happening everywhere, but BMW--being the leader that it is--is making it happen bigger and quicker!

A 335i sedan with EVERY option is $53,655 (and that include the $2000 Active Cruise Control that no one buys). Where did you get $57.000 ?

And also, the biggest seller in the 3-series family is the 325i/328i not the 330i/335i

You aren't considering that a 328i is the entry level car not the 335i. You can get a 328i new for as little as 33k. So consider this wht do you get for you 47k on a 335i. Free paid full maintenance for 4 years or 50k miles, no one offers this on 2007 model year cars, free 4 years of BMW assist. World car of the year, Navigation with realtime traffic no extra cost. 300 horsepower and 300 pound feet of tourque at 1450 rpm. And gets 20 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. Faster better handling better brake systems, more fun to drive than any of the competition. The best sports sedan at the best value. You get what you pay for.

Chips Ahoy, I'm not going to jump on Edmunds and crack-out the Passat 3.6 4-motion Wagon and see how it reaches $40 grrrr. (You gotta make it a wagon, bro. I bet you knew that when you threw the 40 at us.) However, you threw into that Passat but a pack of air fresheners. There's this little button on that Bimmer site called accessories that gets into the wheels, car mats and what not. But we don't even have to go there because the alarm on a BMW is $795 and we didn't even include that into our little shopping list.

And where did you get that the 325/328 is now the benchmark for your knocking your German friends' price down? What is reviewed by EVERY major car mag and web site. The 325? I think not! Have you seen 1 single 328 article? Or is it trapped in paranthesis in the 335i article?

You're not an honest man, Chiparoo. You are fudging your numbers like an Enron executive. But you have passion for your brand and that's understandable. You would comb over numbers in a non-binding web site argument for the Bimmer. That's fine. A man has to love his wheels. Maybe you should go out and take a spin around the block, clear your head of all this!

Suddenly, the love for the 328! Ode to the little guy! The middle-manager and the executive secretary after her 2nd promotion. It brings a tear to see all the Autospies enthusiasts typing on their keyboard with their racing gloves on, their bare little fingers working the 'board as they chime in that the 328 is actually a legitimate talking point in the 3-series family. Because we all know they've been talking up the 325i to their family and friends for years! The 330i? No, it's practically the same. We always gave love to the 325. So why not use THAT as the benchmark for the 3-series price. Just like we should use the IS250 and the A4 2.0T as the benchmark for Lexus and Audi. (On second thought, go ahead and compare the IS350 and the A4 3.2 to the 328. It just looks better.) Don't use the 335i. That's not fair! (How do I get these gloves off?)

Chip, the 328/335 is hella expensive thanks to the price jumps. You gotta understand that. I know those years growing up in the BMW factory gave you a strong allegience to your captors. It's called the Stockholm Syndrome and it can be cured. Just look at Patty Hearst. I'm not taking the BMW-love away. I'm just looking at it from someone who grew up in America.

BMW raised the price a little bit because they had to. Any car company that gives one of their models a refresh so soon, has to raise the price here or there.

The reason? Simple...Say you come in a buy a 330i one day for 36 grand (I know you cant get it for exactly 36 but were talking base prices), and then the next day their selling the 335i for the same price. Well now your brand new car simply becomes outdated and devalues more than it should.

Thus the reason for the price change...so owners of the outdated models don't have a brand new car with little value sitting in their driveway.

A company like BMW doesn't make a move like this unless they know people will pay for it. They price themselves at what the market will bare, regardless of production costs. If they feel they could make more money, then they do... In theory that ultimately leads to better cars for, via extra R&D money, for the consumer.

For me the use of a turbo has turned me off to this car. BMW has had 6 cylinder motors that could make 300 horsepower for years, why use turbo now? I don't care how much turbo-lag has been reduced it still reeks of corner-cutting, especially in a car sold as a "driver’s car;" but if they’re able to charge more than ever, while cutting costs, and still keep sales up, more power to them. They’re obviously doing something right.

We talk about these ultra-expensive cars like we're the guy or gal who can absorb these crazy prices.

Meanwhile, the average drive-off price of a new car with ALL options: $27,000.

I'd love to know what you all make and how you all feel so justified in plunking down your family's money (just because you earned it doesn't mean it's yours) on the most expensive cars on the planet.

If you enthusists were just a bit less enthusiastic over paying whatever BMW is charging this week for a taste, I'd sleep a lot better at night. I'd like your kid to have a college education, not a hand-me-down tuner he can drive to the poly-tech institute.

Most people who purchase BMW, and Mercedes aren't really to worried about the price of the car. Mercedes have and will always be expensive. BMW's have gotten expensive over time. Its was that entry level luxury cars started at about 30k, mid level 40k, and premium 50-60k. Its not like that anymore and people are complaining. Entry level averages 45-50k, mid-level 55-60k, premium 70k on up. things are and will get more expensive. Lexus used to be a bargain. now they are almost expensive and BMW and Mercedes. Things have changed and compentition has gotten more agressive. BMW and Mercedes are trying to keep the wealthy and well heeled. Lexus and Infiniti and Audi are trying to steal people from BMW and Mercedes, the only ones they are stealing are the one's who are concerned about their funds and near same performance for cheap. Like Louis Vuitton and Kenneth Cole. You don't see Louis Vuitton getting cheaper. They are just for the elite. you have fake louis vuitton, but its not the same. regardless of what it holds and how it looks.

At the same time there are brands like Target and Apple who are showing exclusivity in a design sense but losing no cache in keeping themselves less obnoxiously expensive. Let's cut the dog doo here. Giving people good value is not a sign of weakness in a brand. Some of these brands you mention are having a harder time explaining how there is any value attached to their purchases. It's all "discretionary" expenditure. Telling us that something is happening and is a trend tells us nothing, frankly. I can see the trends. I have broadband! I can stream them even. If you compare Lous Vuitton--which is only for people with more money than sense--to BMW then you are making the very point for me. So, OK. BMW is for people with more money than sense. For people dumber than a box of rocks. That will be argued by your BMW faithful, but you're the first poster to just come out and say (like ol' Mikey Bloomberg did about NYC)... we're a luxury good. It doesn't make sense. Pay more and deal with it.

i don't know why you guys complain about the entry level 325.
say hello to the 318i, with hubcaps, cloth, no climate control, single cd radio etc.

will, my opinion is changed. and you were ranting and i was bored and needed ot agree with someone.
and 50k for a bimmer? peanuts. here for a 335 coupe we're looking at 60000 dollars with no options.
we wont get the 328 here, we will get the 320, 325, 330, 335, 320d, 330d and 335d.at launch it is the 325i, 330d, 330i, 335d and 335i. the 335d has 286 hp and costs more than the 335i. leather isn't standard. the 335d i optioned came to 80000 dollars.
most people will buy the 320d, but that's not the point.
also, our 325 is actually a 2.5 rather than a 3.0 like the american version was.

Don't forget the TL Type S may even hit 50K. The TL-Aspec version up here in Canada is 46K. So Type S has to be more than that.

Most consumers go for a 325i/328i rather than a 330i/335i because they don't need that extra power. They get what they pay for in a 325i/328i. Dynamic driving in modern luxury with a car that's known for it. Only the hardcore enthusiasts or 'racer-types' go for the more powerful.

Price isn't as much of an issue as personality. A person may have the money but still choses not to buy a high end 3-series sedan/coupe. Perhaps they don't feel the need not because they're poor or they're 'wannabee's'. People who think like that are just ignorant. Wealth doesn't mean ignorance. Practicality is always in the minds of the rich as well. IMO it's very true.

335i looks stunning and i'm sure the value is there. Much like the 325i/328i/330i sedans/coupes.

TL's, G35's, A4's, are also good value as well. TL especially with fully powered/heated except navigation as standard. G35's not too shabby either. A4's sacrificing a lot less horsepower but perhaps more quality and driving dynamics w/the 2.0T model.

The A4 you configured was with red non metallic paint and beige interior. Try it with Dolphin Gray Metallic (800), Black Leather interior (1,000) and then add the S-line package. Now its over 50 grand even without the titanium package.

This post was about how much MORE the BMW 3-series is to ITSELF.

The $2,400 price increase for 45 more horsepower. And the fact that BMW 3's will be in showrooms at over $50k MSRP.

By the way Audi fan, cold weather is just heated REAR seats. Heated front seats are standard.

Will, your A there in your list "the new 3 may be expensive" is being hotly contested by micro chip and his brethren. Apparently the 3 is not expensive and I am wrong. That is Chippy's point. So your Ghandiesque gesture to make peace on that I think won't go. I have to be wrong here. That's the only way it can be settled. So,

"The new 3 is not expensive. It's in fact quite reasonable to raise the price upwards of $2,400 6 months after introducing your last new model. And there are enough level-headed people with upwards of $2,850 extra dollars burning a hole in their pocket (with all the package increases) that expensive really doesn't even factor into it. BMW raised the price a little bit because they had to. Any car company that gives one of their models a refresh so soon, has to raise the price here or there.

The reason? Simple...Say you come in a buy a 330i one day for 36 grand (I know you cant get it for exactly 36 but were talking base prices), and then the next day their selling the 335i for the same price. Well now your brand new car simply becomes outdated and devalues more than it should.

Thus the reason for the price change...so owners of the outdated models don't have a brand new car with little value sitting in their driveway.

Nope, I had the $1,000 premium leather on mine. I guarantee you there was not one option I didn't get. It was about $47K. A lot for an A4, but I've never met somebody that got one for that much money. They'd have gotten an A6 for that.

A 335ci for sixty grand is just ridiculous. It's a lot for a 5 Series!

What I was TRYING to say was simply....YES.....the new 335i is more expensive but worth it.........and that other cars in this class are leaping up in price as well. Hence my reference to the Audi A4 and Mercedes C-class. I can absolutely guarantee that the next A4 and C-class will have lucrative new options that increase the price just as the 300hp motor in 335i took it up a notch.

S4 Cabrio.....Ok so you guarantee an A4 doesnt cost that much? I clearly printed all the options for a 2006 A4 3.2 quattro (auto) in a previous post so you can see for yourself. What would be the point of fabricating its price and options ? Im simply proving that these cars can all become expensive when every option box is checked. Its not just a 335i whose price is greatly increasing.

No 335i can cost $60,000 from the factory.The sedan is TOTALLY loaded with every single option at $53,865 and the coupe $54,690. But not 60 grand. Yes, expensive, but to some (myself included) worth it.

And this trend in rising option prices only seems to be getting worse. Get used to it.

well, i cannot see the big deal here. The comparison to the A4 3.2 is somewhat irrelevant, it has a smaller engine than the 335i and performance numbers anre not the same, therefore it will make sense for the 335i to cost more. I am not saying the A4 is not a good car, i am just basing my arguments on what the cars offer. The A4 3.2 comes close to the 335i in price when optioned out, if u were to take an S4 which has a closer engine size to the 335, then u might have a better comparo and the s4 will def cost more with all the options, the C Class, 320 will definetly and easily cost far more with all the options and accessories included. The IS will definetly cost more than all 3 of these cars, but since when have we really been able to compare Lexus on the same caliber as Benz, BMW, and Audi, it is only recently that Lexus has stepped up their engine size and performance numbers to compete with the Germans, so therefore, being it's first time around with bigger engines and better performance numbers, it is only reasonable for Lexus to price under, i do not recall any of the older lexus cars being known for their performance or driving accolades, except in reliability and comfort. btw- Camry's and Avalons are quite comfy and luxurious and do have some decent sized engines for more performance, plus thousands less than their Lexus counterparts since it is not always about performance. Anyway, Benz, Bimmers and Audi's have not always been outrageously priced till perhaps now, but new technology, better performance numbers, behind the scenes business decisions, economies and economics, material costs and etc all factor in to the final price of a car, there is far more r&d in luxury cars than ever before, so u r still gettin what u paid for. Finally, buy what you like if you can afford it, $60,000 for a 3 series might be expensive to some, but not to others, Louis hand bags are quite expensive and at the end of the day, it is still a bag, can't sae your life or make it better, but it still costs more than a regular handbag as so do their pther products

I just got a G35c last month. All it had was two things in the price. Premium package, and the 18" Performance Tire & Wheels. You pretty much get everything in the premium package for only 3gs. my msrp was 37,710. The performance is like a 330 if not better and price is like a nicely equipped 325. Best value for me.

The Sedan 335i has not been tested yet. Whats your deal anyway? Work for Lexus? Anyone who has actually driven the two cars (IS 350 and 330i sedans) will cklearly see why the BMW is better. Better handling, reposnse, stabability, and design. (that last one is just an opinion) And now with the new 335i engine, I don't undertand why someone would consider an IS as a substitute.
Also i think you are forgetting that horsepower doesn't always mean speed. It's how the horsepower gets put to the ground. I have a 1970 Eldorado with 400hp. That doesnt mean it's gonna do 0 - 60 anywhere near modern day times.

I am looking to purchase a 335i Coupe and I was shocked by the price tag, too! I have always loved the BMW's, but I am definitely considering ALL options after seeing the price increases.
