Is The 2007 BMW 328i Convertible The Ultimate Tanning Machine?
The first question to deal with in reviewing the BMW 328i hardtop convertible is this -- does it deliver a true coupe experience with the top up?

The short answer: yes.

We were shocked at how the car, with the top up, delivered a true no-compromise ride that is capable of making you forget you actually also have a convertible. And this is a vital question for this category of vehicle, because some folks just can't afford to own three cars -- two for the family and one, just for fun.

So right off the bat, if you're looking to drop a little under $50,000, you can indeed get 2 BMWs for the price of one.

I'm shocked it was rated marginal for frontal crash ratings.

Was it frontal or side crash?

It looks hot in red! ... but needs better rims.

Agree 100%.

3-Series still looks absolutely the best in standard coupe form, though. I'd take a coupe with a sunroof...

The 335i Sport's rims are much better than these. I'm sure my wife likes this color...

I've had mine for 3 months (sterling grey w/tan interior) and its a really great car. Only negatives are:
(1) trunk room non-existent with the top down.

(2) the top has these annoying sensors which I guess prevent kids fingers from getting chopped off - and also cause the top to not work if anyone is standing within seemingly an 8 foot radius of the car. It took the dealer two service appointments to figure that out.

(3) becuase of those sensors, there cannot be anything in the trunk if you want to put it down.

(4) Let me repeat - there is effectively no trunk if the top is down.

(5) the back seat center console is a waste of space

(6) back seat is not properly contoured to receive a child booster seat or infant seat - it just doesn't fit.

(7) skip the Nav system - as the dash looks MUCH cleaner without it.

It drives wonderfully though and if I was a childless, single, swinger person I'd like it a lot more.

I've had my 335i convertible for two months - white with saddle interior. I strongly recommend taking the Navigation/iDrive system, I love it especially since I also have the bluetooth and iPod connectivity options. I can't imagine the car being half as much fun without these options.

Hell the BMW 335i Convertible is so good it makes me want to trade in my other vehicle [Lexus LX470] and get another BMW as soon as the X7 comes to market.

I am trying to find a booster seat that works for my 335 convertible. Have you found anything that works?

I hear you and maybe my post is a bit whiny..
but my point is..

if somebody buys a Z4 or a Boxster, you expect it to have no room. But you buy a seemingly roomy 4 seater convertible like the 328 (the back seat is very big for a convertible) with a nice trunk with the top up...and it becomes very impractical with the top down. Then you put the stuff that would've been in the trunk (beach chairs, towels, beach umbrella, etc) in the back seat and it all blows around.

In retrospect, I think the Audi A4 cabrio is a better proposition, though the back seat is smaller. Perhaps I'm just a little frustrated with the packaging of the hard top?

I think BMW has made this car exactly for a person with kids.
3 series convertibles are some of the most popular convertibles in my area, which is full of yummy mummies.
There are nearly the same number of 3 series convertibles in my road as all other BMWs, 4 3 series convertibles, 5 other BMWs.
And my road is full of parents, no single people at all.

nybimmer, back seat in my S4 convertible is actually quite usable. If you're under 5'10" (or whoever sits in the back is), that person would be very comfortable with someone who is the same height at the wheel. It's not that there's a ton of knee travel room, but there is great foot room under the front seats that makes the rear seat better than most convertibles (I've attempted to sit in Jaguar XK, Lexus SC, Saab 9-3 convertible and a Merc CLK500).

There's also a nice trunk when the top is down. Although my wife will probably get a 335i convertible, there's no doubt that an A4 2.0T Cabriolet would be a more practical vehicle for her.

Wi11 -
My first mistake was that I wanted the 'first one' - I ordered it sight unseen based on the crack Autospies reporting I read this fall..guess I should've waited and bought the S4 instead.

Oh well

It's not like the 3er convertible is a bad car though...don't you dare complain or I'll swim the Atlantic and come and steal it as you don't deserve it!

And the trunk issue is the reason I do not want to buy a hardtop convertible, and why I don't like them.

nybimmer

You are right about this point, it should have been a bit roomier, or should have had a larger trunk space. But then again the coupe does not suffer from this problem, just the convertible. Does the Audi A4 cab have a larger trunk space?

Yes, the trunk in my car is larger than any hardtop convertible with the top down.

(In response to the title) No, that would be the 335i.

just wait, the A4 will be hardtop next iteration and also have little or no trunk space. I mean, the IS will have a hard top cabrio, Volvo does and now BMW (pretty much a given CLK will too). They can raise the price a few grand (new 335 only $2100 more than wife's 330i w/like options) and tout the 2-in-1 usability.

The A5 cabrio will have a cloth top, and I think the Merc will too.

Audi isn't that stupid. It will have a cloth top, and it will weigh less than the 3, go faster, get better mileage and have more trunk space. It will even look better with the top up!
