I take it he was very excited about the car...Especially considering Jay is old school & doesn't care for cars that marvel in the latest technology, for this car to grip him in the way it did says worlds about the GT-R.
Anyone who denies this cars capabilities is irrelevant.

Yeah, Leno would drive the car for 3 or 4 days and then he would forget about it and go back to what he likes ;-)

To label this Nissan a 'supercar' is laughable.

batman,
What is the true mark of a supercar then? Is it a badge on the bonnet? Is it the price being double through quadruple the price of this marvel? This vehicle has insane numbers and decent style, that sounds like most supercars I have known from the past and know now. Just because it's not as pricey nor does it say Porsche, Ferrari, Aston, or Lamborghini doesn't mean it's any less a supercar.

The term "Super" denotes an extreme. IMO it means Extreme Speed, Extreme Price, Extreme Beauty(although subjective) and Extreme rarity. That is the litmus test.
No one is doubting the GTR is an AWESOME vehicle, one I would be honored to own and drive but to compare it to "supercars"(classic definition) such as the Ferrari F40, F50, Lamborgini Diablo, Veryon, McLaren F1 etc. is a bit far fetched.
Fact is, no one who is in the market to purchase any of those vehicles mentioned(or present day counterparts), will purchase a GTR. Not to say they won't have a GTR in their garage, but it is certainly not cross-shopped at that time.
People purchase Ferrari's, Lamborginis etc. because of the badge - yes, but the badge's reputation and mystique was created by the vehicle it represents, not the other way around.

Either you are as Jay quoted, "part of my generation... or part of the Playstation generation..." So if indeed you are in Jay's gen. then your opinion would have some merit.
But, if you are a part of the Playstation gen. (which pretty much means: have you ever played Gran Turismo) then your opinion holds nothing. Because being a member of that gen. you were introduced to the Skyline GTR (R32). I would be safe to say that a majority of the posters on this forum know the capabilities of the R32, R33, and R34 Skyline GTR variants.
So, I ask you this: Did you just really suck at Gran Turismo and pin-balled your way around the tracks? Or, your favorite part of the series is when in GT4 they introduced the Ford Lightning SVT and that was 'yo ride'. Skyline, no way, not for you. I buy American (even in games). I won't give credit to brilliant engineering, and the tuning potential of the RB26DETT, no, not you. That wouldn't make sense.
Thats it.
I'm still trying not to choke myself though.....

No Horsepower? so how does it run 7:29 on the ring? I agree a supercar is more than numbers but this thing is just plain fast and handles like hell. there is no way anyone can say otherwise. As far as heritage, the GTR has it, maybe not as much as ferrari etc, but this isn't the first time the GTR has beat the 911 around the ring. It has done so in the past. But it doesn't have the luxury, exclusivity, or handcrafted build quality like ferrari lambo etc. in that case the Vette and Viper are not supercars either. Bottom line is this is a badass car and I'm not a japanese car fan but I am not narrow minded or brainwashed into thinking only one country makes good cars and the rest suck. I am a BMW fan myself but I am not the typical narrow minded fan boy that thinks BMW is the mecca of all cars. I think the ISF is a hell of an effort from lexus and it will reach the market it was intended for. If they wanted all of the M3 buyers it would be engineered more like the M3.

Well and AWD toyota matrix isn't exactly a spectacular breathtaking car. AWD doesn't make it the best. I like AWD by the way, it has its places and purposes just like RWD (my favorite) and FWD.

A 'supercar' can't be defined solely by performance numbers. There's a whole list of factors that propel a car into 'supercar' status. Performance, exorbitant cost, prestige, exclusivity, pedigree, racing history, etc. The Nissan, while meeting some, doesn't meet all the criteria. Therefore, its a nice performing car but not a 'supercar.'
If you define a 'supercar' just by performance, as many of you seem to be doing, than any knucklehead with a souped up civic that slams 911 turbos would be legitimately able to lay claim to the title.
I think not.

As ignorant as his previous statement seemed to be he has indeed justified saying it. I still think the GT-R is a supercar ;-)

A supercar can not be defined by numbers. It has to incorporate the design aspect as well. This GT-R is a phenomenal car but it lacks the design aspect to make it comparable to the Europeans. Then again the only Japanese supercar that had anything similar to the Euros was the NSX. The GT-R is a fun rice rocket with major mods but still maintaining that "factory" look.

Exactly. Supercar performance #'s do not give a car supercar status. Their's tons of other tuner cars that put out supercar performance numbers but their not considered supercars by any means. If you can't consider a Corvette Z06 or a Porsche GT3 a supercar then the GT-R does not qualify as well.
