Motor Trend says Infiniti G37 beats the BMW 335. Does their opinion REALLY matter?
We've been getting a lot of comments about the recent article in Motor Trend that picked the Infiniti G37 Coupe over the BMW 335 Coupe.
But the bigger question is- Does their opinion REALLY matter anymore and will their review have any effect on public perception and more importantly, sales?
We say five years ago maybe, but not in today's world.
The car mags have become irrelevant in our opinion and will never return to their former luster.
There is only one opinion that really matters anymore and that is yours.
Do you agree?
We'd love to hear your thoughts.

But the G37 vs. 335i can't be compared to Lexus Rx350 vs. Hyundai Veracruz.
Since the original G Coupe the comparison have been very close. So I don't see why people are making such a big deal out of this. To me it's not surprising at all.

BMW's are such Yuppie cars. Every car in that class, is a great car, you cannot go wrong with any of them. BMW's rely just as much on marketing as Lexus does.
BTW, Motor Trend's opinion does matter, because if it didn't, the BMW would never been the king of anything.

Obviously it does.
The average person has much more exposure to car magazines then car websites.
Plus, now Infiniti has some nice quotes to provide their marketing department with.
I really can't believe all the BMW guys are getting so pissed about this. If you are so in love with the 3, what does anyone's opinion matter to you?
The whole BMW vs. Mercedes vs. Lexus is just as stupid and pointless as the Xbox vs. Wii vs. Playstation 3 debates.

You're right. Both the Infiniti and the BMW in this review did not feature a "pedal on the left", a trait they share with the Bugatti Veyron.
No longer does a car have to have a manual transmission to have performance, and no longer does a car have to have a roundel or star on the hood to be exciting.
Get over it, jackass.

right Bimmermike, because 5% of ALL BMWs sold have an actual manual transmission, meaning that 95% of all BMW owners are clueless about owning the Ultimate Driving Machine? And you're bragging about owning an M3? Gee, what a rare car, you hardly ever see those!

Ever since the 993 or 996 Porsche turbo where the 0-60 time was faster with the automatic, I figured morons like bimmermike would have gotten a clue. I guess not.
It is possible to have a performance car with an automatic transmission. In addition to gasoline powered cars from Germany and Italy, the Tesla electric roadster is proof of this.
Manual transmissions are fun, but not required for a sports car. Bimmermike, perhaps your obsession with jerking on a stick has clouded your judgement?

Agent 001 you are right, in a sense the only opinion that matters is the one that belongs to the paying customer. However there is one more thing at play here. Let us look at two different comparisons that were recently held by Motor Trend. First the one that is doubted by many BMW lovers. Motor Trend came up with the conclusion that there is very small difference between the performance of these two machines and that by being the cheaper of the two the G is the better choice for the consumer. What does this do, exactly? Well it may do nothing since people who want to buy a BMW will want buy one. It may, however, now attract people who were considering to get rid of their BMW or people who want to drive something like a BMW but not a BMW. You see a BMW fan can put down the IS, A4, C-class because it is superior in performance, but it cannot do the same to the G because they are very similar. What this comparison provides is a dignified alternative to the BMW 3 series, once again. Again I want to say is that in this comparison neither car won, but that is the thing they comparison was a draw but the G cost $8000 less.
Now the second comparison, Veracruz vs RX 350. The RX 350 is the better car and has a luxury nameplate which will get better resale values when it is finally traded or leased. Yet this one hurts a lot to the Lexus, yes people who want a Lexus and can afford a Lexus will get a Lexus, but this comparison provides the buyer with less money to spend with an alternative. A lot of buyers will buy the Hyundai because it is cheaper, and the magazine readers will start to view Hyundai in a different light. Magazine readers are enthusiasts and it is a pretty good chance that they are not going to be considering a Hyundai unless they really have to. Now they may start to see them as a company that can produce good cars and not just cheap ones. This comparison also builds the companies reputation.
In the end it is all about putting the car in people's mind as an alternative to what people want. Yes the guys at Motor Trend and Car and Driver may not have as much influence as years ago, but they still have many readers.

Take it for what it is the BMW is the better car on and off track and you pay more for it, stereotypes , bad service and all . The G is a great car and is the closest to a BMW. I respect the G but it still has along way to go.

The truth is when bMW who was known to be the leader of performance sedan category and suddenly gets dirt kicked in the face in so many comparos done by car enthusiasts..Yeah it matters. BMW makes great high performance engines, I do know that. However, when during a comparo test..the engine overheats and blows up and the test driver runs out screaming for mama..then you have problem with facts of occurance during the testing. NOT OPINION. Eitherway, every review in ever media on every subjects does have a great impact on the society.

I dont think it really matters which one the reviews say is better. I think what matters is that they are both very good cars and both would be a good choice. When i am shopping i would compare the competition reviews and if they are all good the test drive would decide. No magazine is going to decide where i spend my money.

The last time I remember reading J.D Power Associate, even Hyundai better quality than some German brand. So it was not a surprise that Infiniti G37 win the comparison.
When you compare the beauty of the Infiniti G37 to BMW 335i, it like comparing the G37 to a Hyudai Accent or Kia sonata or something like that.

G37 reminds me of an Altima Coupe. The G37 also screams NISSAN!! Which isn't a good trait IMO.
I think that the 335 is a better looking car on the outside, but I like the g37's interior better than the 335's interior.
Given a choice between the two, I’ll take the car that’s faster, better handling, lighter, more fuel efficient, and has better weight distribution. So it’s the 335i for me. But at $8k less than the 335, the G37 is worth a look. But you’ll get what you pay for and spending less money doesn’t equate to getting the better product.

Does Motor Trend opinion REALLY matter? In my opinion comparison test are more for bragging rights. A smart consumer will do their homework and purchase the car that fits there needs and budget. This may not be the tread for this but it's a shame that the 335i lost because of the over-heating issue. Because it appears it had won in every other category. The G37 is no slouch it's indeed a great car for the money. But at the end of the day when BMW factors in their free maintenance program the cost for the G37 and 335i are about the same. For me what makes the 335i a really great car is when chipped it will produce upwards of 400hp/385ft-lbs torque for about $1,300. So, no these comparison test does not matter to me.

not that im discrediting the G37 (because I like that car about as much as I like the 335i COUPE (sedan is butt fugly), but Motortrend always awards the "newest styled" vehicle the winner. ALWAYS. Every time a car is redesigned it wins COTY regardless. Ford F150 (how big of a piece of crap was that vehicle...u barely even see that on the road), new Chevy, new everything. New design wins. Basically, the Motortrend of the year award can be won by anyone so long as you redesign your car.

If BMW would have won, I think a lot of immature "german" car fans would have celebrated and rubbed it in the face of Japanese Car fans.
But my opinion is that it doesnt matter which way the verdict goes. Its one magazine and it means nothing.
BMW is still great, Infiniti has built a good car, and each will still sell.
BMW will still sell 90k+ per MONTH, so it doesnt matter.

As far as the article people - be willing to take the good with the bad. If a magazine votes down a car you like then don't point it out when they do it to one of their competitors. Keep it even.

I just don't see this test swaying many people, especially since the 3 outperformed the G37.

In the end it’s just one publication’s opinion out of hundreds of other possible sources….whether print, TV or Internet, agree with it or not…..file it away or soak it up.
For me at least Motor Trend's credibility is severely downgraded. They sensationalized the cover, and made it appear as if Infiniti scored a “decisive” victory on the 335i. That’s just laughable.

Since I own both an Infiniti and a BMW. I wouldn't doubt it. I love both of my cars. My Infiniti's older but it runs like a champ and has plenty of power. As for 335 vs G37..from what I know from owning the two of them...I'd really take both...I do like to look at resale value though..the Bimmer would be better. I don't normally keep cars forever, but my 99 Q45t is a keeper...how long will I keep my 645ci? I'll give it another year.

The people on this site are like little kids. Why do you take it so personally. I don't care if you like my cars or not. I like all of my cars..hell, I own an Infiniti, Bmw, Mercedes and a Chrysler (shoot me). You folks need to grow up. Stop bitching everytime someone says something negative about your favorite car. Waa waa waa!!

Its because they are angry for MT doing something that is absolutely wrong. The 335 won the comparison, but MT gave it the G just for the value--that is BS, and every enthusiast, whether they admit it or not, knows this is true---because it is.

All american car mags are garbage.
cuz nobody knows how to drive in north america.
seriously.
you can tell by the simple fact that everybody here drives automatics, upon a few years ago no car in europe even had automatic.
MT & CD & WR are all nonsense mags seriously.
they are all tools and biased by whoever gives them money.
I wouldnt buy a car because an american mag said its good, thats for sure.

Candywhite, you are a Euro-trash prima dona obviously, to say that about North American drivers. Ive seen people drive all over the world, and the worst are in Africa, and Asia. The best drivers I have seen are in Germany. American drivers fit neatly in the middle, because after all, people come from all over the world to live here after learning to drive in other countries. Thats why the drivers in Washington DC, Atlanta, Houston, NewYork, and other major immigrant cities have the highest accident rates, as well as the highest incidents of traffic citations for moving v
