Review: 2008 Audi A5 Test Drive
After more than fifteen years of conspicuous absence from the luxury sport coupe segment, Audi makes a grand re-entrance.

Audi abandoned the luxury sport coupe market more than fifteen years ago, but now aims to shake it up again with its new A5. In 1991, when the company discontinued its Quattro Coupe, a ground-breaking car that was among the first high-performance vehicles to include all-wheel-drive, other automakers happily and capably filled the void. The new A5 enters a much more competitive landscape than the one it left more than a decade back; it’s now filled with appealing entrants such as the BMW 3 Series Coupe, Infiniti G37 and Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class....

Audi’s interior designers must be descendants of fine watchmakers: They share an obsession for extreme precision and detail. Little touches like rubberized vent controls, satin-finished engine start button and knurled aluminum on the Multi Media Interface (MMI) control knob exemplify this engineering mentality.

The only problem is they have become too busy. You marvel at the quality but there now is simply too many buttons and knobs in the dash and console. I much prefer the simplicty of the new Jaguar XF layout.

Although I love Audi interiors I always felt that in general interiors that are too busy distract you away from the driving experience especially in a car built for sporty driving. That's just my opinion.

EVERYBODY! Read Need4Speed's comment. Notice how he didn't ramble on about his his favorite car would KILL this car, or how dumb you must be for liking it? Just an honest opinion and a reason to back it up. THATS the way you talk about cars..

mini22,

Interestingly, Jaguar designers pretty much ripped off the A8's interior layout completely for the XF. They just use different materials.

The A8's is my favorite interior under $150K, so I can't blame the Jag designers, but I just wish Audi designers would use it as THEIR template instead of using the A6's busier interior!

I certainly appreciate the build-quality of Audi interiors, but aesthetically there are far more appealing layouts available these days...

It's all becoming 'more of the same' with Audi...

Fully agree re Audi interiors. I'm totally happy with the layout of my leased A6 Quattro as well. I have to wait for the Q5 as my wife is looking for a small SUV and finds the Q7 too big. I guess the Audi corporate snout is a love-it-or-hate-it thing; I happen to love it but want the big fat horizontal center bar gone from the grille.

I have a feeling they won't let us down with the 2010 A8. It will probably have either an...

A) completely new layout with ultra-elegant surfacing and interfaces

or

B) perfected version of the current layout (A6, A5, Q7), with even better materials and less buttons. The buttons that would REMAIN there, however, would probably be made out of metal.

S4cab,

Will the 2010 A8 have side-protection strips?

Otherwise it will be another flop for Audi.

;)

I agree with the comments on the buttons. No doubt they have the best interior bits and pieces, but there are too many buttons on Audi models below the A8.

I think the S-Class has too few buttons and leaves the interior looking cold and stark many times, and the 7-Series interior is very fuctional, which leaves the A8 interior which is a perfect compromise on the two layout designs.

Who really needs this car when you can get a Toyota Solara or a Lexus SC430?

Enough about the interior already!! What about the rest of the car? Namely the engine? 268hp? How the hell is 268hp supposed to compete with the 300hp 335, and 330hp g37? Answer? It can't compete.

I like Audis but unless there's an "S" or an "RS" on the badge, the engine (and performance) isn't really going to be special.

The A5 is car that will be priced a little higher than the 335i, while offering performance (and HP) that's at the Toyota Solara level.

The A5 is a finely crafted car, that's wrapped in a sexy body, that in-the-end offers nothing more than a Camry when you press the gas. All of this for
$50K +. When I turn 60 Years-Old I might get this car but for now I need more excitement when I press the Loud pedal. Sorry Audi but the A5 is a either a senior citizen car, or a poser car imo.

You the same preformance as a 330i coupe?

You americans need to get it through your heads that the 3.2 quattro is there to compete against the 330i coupe and CLK350.

What you'r saying is the same as saying BMW needs an M car to top the S cars.

Are you saying we should compare the A5's engine with a car BMW no longer makes? The 330i is discontinued. If you're plunking down $50+ on a 2-door car, it had better have class-standard power, don't you think?

But in Europe the 330i is still in production!

We don't live in Europe. And over hear you cannot buy a 330i. We can only Compare what we have available.

"The A5 is a finely crafted car, that's wrapped in a sexy body, that in-the-end offers nothing more than a Camry when you press the gas. All of this for
$50K +."

This is completely false. Since when is 0-60mph in 5.7 seconds slow? Because that's how quick the A5 is- Audi's 6.1 second time is an underestimate.

Anyway, it's between the 335i and 328/330i in performance. It will also be between them in price-- probably not more expensive than the 335i. Unless, however, it comes loaded with the base price, which is possible.

The 330i still has 260hp in Europe, but here we get the 328i which as 230. The 328xi is the closest A5 competitor right now, and the 335xi will be the same with the S5. Both Audis have more standard features and power than their BMW counterparts and are therefore more expensive.

How about just class leading stupidity... compare...compare this with that... mine is bigger than yours... does everything has to be compared?

Yes yhey are in the same class, 4 wheels, 2 doors, a 6 cylinders engine. what if Audi did not care about going head to head with BMW?
What if they just wanted to actually compete in a different way?
I said this before;
the A5/S5 is not a direct competitor to the 3 series.
The 3er is very boyracerish, it's its reputation, specially the coupe, some might not like this, the 6er is for some a bit too big and too much of a GT cruiser, so Audi is offering an alternative, a bit bigger than the 3er, but comfortable and autobhan fast like the 6er, and in some instances a bit slower than the 3er.

This is what defines Audi most of the time, overall quality, overall value, but still being an alternative.

If someone is deciding between an Audi or a BMW then guess what? They are competitors. The only reason why some folks say that they aren't competitors is because the Audi gets its butt handed to it in areas than can be measured.

It isn't up to you to determine which car should compete with each other (or not), its up to the person spending the cash.

But I do agree that the A5/S5 are being compared to everything. Its sorta troubling if you ask me. I've seen the S5 compared to a G37, a car that will cost about $15,000 less. You will never see a BMW 6 series being compared against a G37. The A5/S5 are nice cars but they aren't special imo. In fact, I think that the A5/S5 are overpriced and under performing. But at least they have real nice interiors.

S5, under-performing? Considering you've never seen one or sat in one-- let alone driven in one --I take your sentiments with a grain of salt.

Read the reviews. It may not have the handling of the RWD 335i coupe, but it will trash the 335xi, as Audi's AWD system is superior to BMW's. It also (from videos) has an amazing exhaust note and blasts from 0-60mph in 4.6 seconds. "Under performing," my @ss. Definitely worth the $55K.

OK S4Carbriofoxone. You are right I should have said that the A5 alone is under performing. The S5 is a performer but you pay for it at the fuel pump. While the 335 gets a good 12mpg more, while providing almost the same performance. I'm into the efficiency thing, and would rather spend my money elsewhere than to give it to the oil-companies.

$55k? Base price maybe. I'll take the 335, save about $10k, and get better fuel mileage. There's nothing wrong with the S5. I personally am not going crazy over it. I used to own an Audi BTW.

indeed, people can cross-shop any car they want, I've seen people looking to buy a 991 but were thinking about a Prius...go figure, some are shopping for a Cayman but are looking at the Lotus and the Mini Cooper.
When I talk about comparing, I am taking about car magazines and car enthusiasts, not car buyers.
