Reviewer Says New Hyundai Genesis Trunk Is Finished Worse Than A $21K Chevy!
7 Series size, 5 Series performance, 3 Series price, Hyundai says.

Hyundai subsequently toned down the hyperbole, saying the Genesis (developed under codename "BH") would offer Infiniti/Lexus-like luxury and performance at a typically cut-rate Hyundai price.

The Genesis is no sport sedan.

Hyundai didn't sweat the details, though, because elsewhere they're less impressive. The hood gap is a bit too wide. The Genesis has plastic-finished gooseneck hinges (not bad, but they're not gas-filled shocks) and parcel shelf speaker and subwoofer bottoms of that high-end Lexicon system are left exposed. A $21k Chevy Malibu's trunk is finished better.

We're not going to say we told you so, we'll let our readers do that.

001 - you goof. The entire article spent countless words talking about how well done the car was overall, and while it may not be a Lexus / Infiniti beater for it's first time out, it does a lot of things well. Rather than actually talk about how they've stepped up, you've stressed the ONE thing they knock. And, truthfully, if the biggest knock is the panel gap size and the lining of the trunk -- good for them.

If they raise the bar, Honda, Toyota, et. al. will have to do the same.

I'm not in the market for this vehicle, but if I was looking for the best way to spend 30k, it'd be hard not to look in this car's direction.

Don't be a tool.

Yes, it does seem odd that the underneath of the rear speaker parcel shelf is left exposed. But because this vehicle is coming from a company most people wouldn't expect, Hyundai, it's a WINNER!

Since Hyundai made the decision to not use the familiar "H" logo grille, why is it visible on the steering wheel and trunk lid? They should remove them immediately to maintain that visual perception of car more expensive than it truly is.

Wow- Autospies zeroed in on the most critical comment of the car, which happened to be the finish of the trunk and made it headline news. As Motor Trend states, this does appear to be a nicely finished and generally attractive sedan priced at 28K +.

Don't blame Hyundai for shaving costs here and there, that's to be expected for a value leader in the segment. At least Genesis will cost thousands less and offer great value.

Don't forget, BMW does the same thing - go through each car looking to shave costs to maximize profits... that why you don't get a spare tire/dip stick/real leather etc., but their MSRP stays the same!

"that why you don't get a spare tire/dip stick/real leather etc"

Eh, they use runflats, thats why you don't get a spare. Also there's no dipstick because you can access the oil level through the iDrive or OBC. Also they do use real leather, with sun-relective technology in the new 3-series coupe ;)

"that why you don't get a spare tire/dip stick/real leather etc., but their MSRP stays the same!"

Thanks you Auto001, for reminding us that you're quickly becoming the new huu76 for idiotic comments.

There's no spare because BMW uses (more expensive)runflat tires. That allows them to give the consumer a larger trunk without having to make a larger, heavier car.

There's no dipstick because BMW integrated it into the onboard computer. More expensive than a regular metal dipstick? You bet. More convenient for the owner than having to find a rag and get under the hood? You bet.

And leather, well, that's just stupid. Leather is available on every BMW it isn't standard on.

We get that for whatever reason you hate BMW. That's fine, no car fits everyone. But if you're going to try to talk badly about them, you might try saying things that don't make you look like a moron.

Title is extremely misleading. I was almost biased when I started reading the article...
On the other hand, above-average report card for the new Hyundai Genesis. Very good effort. I agree with 001: this beats a 300C or Avalon.

Congratulations, Hyundai. Korean pride!!!! lol

Styling on the front is extremely similar to the Mercedes S-class. The rear has a touch of M45?

In short, styling is the main fault of the car. Otherwise, quality is impressive

If you've read my comments on the car I have NEVER said it was not a NICE car...

From my article in January...

"Is it a good car with a lot of value?

We're sure it will be.

Will it drive nice?

Are they giving you a lot for $30k. Yes

Their PR team assures us our opinion will change when we drive it (Can't wait).

They also tell me that even though all the hype has insinuated that it is a Lexus killer, they tried to assure me, it didn't come from them but was created by the blogosphere.

And all our competitors have drank the kool-aid and have been raving about it which really exposes their inexperience and lack of expertise.

So is it a Lexus LS400 for 30k?

READ MY LIPS....NOT IN A MILLION BILLION YEARS!

In fact, the best comment I heard about the exterior design was and I quote- 'Shouldn't it have been displayed downstairs?' For the uninitiated, downstairs in Cobo Hall is where they put all the Chinese/Korean clones.

Hyundai made an awful mistake here in our opinion.

Call it the best value in the $30k range and we got no issue.

Imply it's one of the elite cars for $30k, then we got a problem."

It really shows their inexperience and poor insight IMHO.

Most of these writers wouldn't know a good car if it drove over them on the street.

Lexus LS/ES Manual?
Acura RL Manual?

BMW 7 Series Manual?

Point is, someone looking at a luxury(albeit entry-level)vehicle isn't looking for a manual tranny.

what people here dont understand is that most people cant afford a bmw,mb,audi, infiniti,or a lexus. So this is a huge bargain for many people. I think overall they did a good job for being a korean company. Everyone starts from somewhere right. I wouldnt buy one but a number of my korean friends would. National loyalty I guess. Most of you do the same.

As I said million times, workforce in Korea is as expensive as in europe, research and development is as expensive as in the rest of the world, materials are as expensive as everywhere and so is marketing. So how come Hyundais are supposed to be cheaper then competition? Logical reasons: old technology reuse, cheaper material usage, copy/paste approach.

"overall they did a good job for being a Korean company"

How very short sighted that just because a company is Korean is must in some way be inferior.

Suggest you check out some of teh many Korean brands out there and surprise yourself with how wrong you are with your ill informed assumptions about Korean industry and global competitiveness.

Anyone can make a luxury car at a high price.

The difficult job is making a cheap or value focused car, and making it good. Not to forget doing all that and still making a profit...

That is where so many people underestimate Hyundai's ability.

'Copy this' 'cheap that' - yaddder yadder yadder.

ugh yea...where did you get all that from my comment? Koreans make some damn good products I know this. But I was talking about a company for the last 30+ years made nothing but cheap cars for the masses. So this being there first stab at the luxo market is a very good try. Its also known that korean car companies are below japan, europe and america as far as advancement in cars. Oh by the way Ive been to korea twice and am full aware of there capabilities.

From Agent001 "And by the way, our competitors are looking REALLY stupid right now for drinking their Kool-Aid."

This car doesn't appear to be the dismal failure you seem to want it to be, but regardless of that - your competitors don't have much to worry about when this site is publishing articles from VW discussion forums about Nissan GT-R maintenance costs and Hogan family celebrity gossip.

That is most retarded comment I've seen about a car. Toned down the hyperbole? Since when does a Lexus perform like an Infiniti? Since when is an Infiniti as refined as a Lexus?

Seems to me like these articles are written by fools who know nothing about cars.

What's with this headline and the other argumentative headlines like "Which is better...", "Who makes the best..."...etc. It's pretty sad when most of the comments are attacking an Agent and the rest is the agent defending himself.

I predict this car will do well and it will change people's view about the brand. It just takes time and of course, nice products.

all car companies start somewhere when trying to introduce new high end vehicle. im big into german luxury vehicles. infact i pretty much dont count lexus, acura, and infiniti as luxury vehicles when compared to the germans. most people i know call me a brand whore or whatever but ultimately i understand why the japanese "luxury" cars sell and thats with good marketing. hyundai has been marketing their cars quite well lately and to dismiss this car and stating its nothing more than a nex gen azera is just silly. v8 rwd platform, aside from the new pontiac, i cant really think of any other non "luxury" brand selling anything in this class. on a side note the finish on the trunk of a lexus sucks compared to an audi so does that make lexus a bad "luxury" brand? the trunk comment was just stupid.

Your socks had better be firmly affixed or the Genesis will blow them clean off; there isn't a better rear-wheel-drive sport sedan for the money.
