Test: 2007 Infiniti G35
G35 is the first BMW competitor that doesn't feel like it's targeted at the last-generation 3-series. Instead, it is neck-and-neck with the current (quite brilliant) 3-series, a truth that emerged during our spirited drive of a G35 Sport in southeast Ohio. With 306 hp and 268 lb-ft of torque from the latest version of Nissan/Infiniti's 3.5-liter DOHC V-6, the G35 had more than enough power to gobble up long, high-speed sections of Morgan County's picturesque Routes 284 and 78 with ease. They did a comparison with G35, Acura TL and Lexus IS350 and the G35 came in last place. Of course the G35 is as good or better than the 3-series. But the real question is can it keep up the IS350? the answer is "NO". The G35 came in last when compare to the Acura TL and Lexus IS350.

1st. Lexus IS350
2rd. Acura TL
3rd. Infiniti G35

Lol, the 330i (well, 335i) is easily better than the IS350.

Why do you even question that?

I like the IS's design a lot, I really do, but when it comes to the overall package, the Lexus can't touch the 3 Series.

supra is not as legendary than a Skyline nor NSX
if IS has supra engine w/ turbo , I will check again ...

Skyline GTR used to have a 4dr sedan too

I cant see a case of connecting supra with IS yet

i dont know see whats the point in the comparisons the 330i beat the is350, the is350 is no match for the 335i period, in my opinion the g35 is the closest thing to a real competitor to the 3 series and its alot less the is costs about as much and is nowhere near being as good, the other cars people make to many excuses for, but hey to these crazy lexus people on here lexus better than everything...did i say crazy didnt want to leave that out

Shouldn't you be out in your 1995 BMW 3-series, showing D-list celebrities around the tract homes and strip malls of Orange County?

Infiniti G35, just another Mercedes-Benz wannabe copy.

At least they know who to copy ;)

what i don't understand is why car companies have all these weird names for their cars, G35, IS350, 330i, why can't they simply call it a name like toyota tundra or ford fusion

Because alphanumerical designations (S450, LS, 34i)are perceived as more upscale and chic than traditional nouns and adjectives (Allure, Allante).

The question then becomes: Can Subaru deliver a dealership/ownership experience that Lexus and other upscale marquees deliver?

S4Cabriofoxone1, I would be caught driving the G35 around OC,CA.

Not enough mechanical bling for EL34.

Do you notice something about this guy, "S4cabriofoxone1"? He seems a lot like a Lexus fan. There are a few Lexus fans on this site that don't have good grammar. Could it be that "lexus1" has come back, copying my name?

ronsscooby, I would "not" be caught in the G35.

I have to have a decent car when driving my clients around OC!

Funny...I the last time I read an article up here about BMW that they have transmission problem? hmmm.... And please do not mention the name of Lexus with that crappy tint box of your C-class. I seen a Kia that look more lively than that new C350.

I actually prefer the last THREE generations of the ES cabin design to that of the new C-class.

First off, for anyone to mention the TL as better than the G35 is absurd. It is a front wheel drive car and can't come close to the handling of a rear wheel drive car. The TL shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as the 3 series, IS or G35.
Keep in mind that I have a G35 and based on my driving experience with all 3 I would choose as follows:
1) BMW 3 series - Best steering feel, top notch handling and refinement. Provides the best overall true sports sedan experience.
2)Infiniti G35 - Soulful, power whenver you need it
(low or high), reliability, alot of car for the money, unrefined.
3)IS350 - great engine, build quality and interior. Handling not up to par with 3 series, G35. Typical Lexus numbness when asked by driver to be sporty.

And the reason I chose a G35? It's alot more car for the money. Great engine, handling, reliabilty, features. A similarly equipped 3 series with equal performance is $7,000 more. And a 328i in the same price range is much too underpowered and stripped of features (Vinyl seats, c'mon!). I wish the G35 had a more refined engine (too loud at acceleration) and would add a 6th gear automatic (3400 rpm at 85mph makes for a loud highway ride.) Otherwise, it is a great car which offers a great alternative to the 3 series and is much more of a true drivers car than the Lexus. As with most Lexus products, the IS has no soul.

What about the lateral accelleration of the TL = .91g and the G35=.88g

What about the slalom speed of the TL=66.0 mph and the G35=65.5.

They all had mild understeer rated in balance for both catagories.

Is that not a factual example of handling?

No, not wrong, just a little crazy. Toy/Lex fans look to empirical data (quality, hp, mpg, ergonomics, materials, workmanship) to justify our love of the vehicles, not to made up concepts like soul and magic feel.

I'd just like to point out that everyone is now arguing because of a tiny one-paragraph little review of the new G.

Here is my 2 cents...

Life is a compromise. Is the BMW 335i worth $10K more than the Infiniti G35? I think it just comes down to what your priorities are. If it’s performance, the BMW is a no-brainer in my mind. It’s incredibly capable, and possibly comparable to the outgoing M3. It is also the flashier car of the two. For those who are more interested in family car attributes of sensibility, price consciousness, or geek attributes of excellent technology, the Infiniti would be the choice. The G35 offers more and better technology than the Bimmer at a lower price, and has performance that is more than adequate for all but a few.
