The New Jaguar XF Is The Least Jaguar-ish Car Ever- Is That A Good Or A Bad Thing?
I've seen the new XF a number of times at the auto shows and now cruising the streets of SoCal and the one thing that keeps going round and round in my mind is that it really ISN'T a Jaguar anymore.

My best description is that it looks like a Lexus GS re-designed by the English with a Lincoln/Mercury interior (all the silver buttons/switchgear that make it look like a cheap Technics stereo component).

It DRIVES better than virtually every Jag EVER made but to us it's lost its soul.

But the REAL question is, does it matter?

The REAL Jag's were doing and have done NOTHING in the marketplace for years and the new one is selling well.

So common sense would say revolutionary change is in order and maybe an English Lexus isn't such a bad idea after all?

But sometimes common sense can come back to bite you in the you know where.

Has Jaguar made the right move or have they veered to far off the design course that it will effect its heritage forever?

I think the XF looks more like an Aston Martin or a Jaguar XK.

I demand Lexus discontinue lifting design cues from those car companies.

This is an untrue and stupid comment. It looks like an Aston Martin which is no surprise since it was designed by the Aston designer!

OK. The XF doesn't have the old-school (old money) look anymore. That's really ok for this historically mistreated brand. They needed the type of evolution that re-invigurated Cadillac and now flowed down to lower-GM brands to bring back profitable excitement.

Jaguar needs to re-establish the brand to be both interesting and reliable....then offer a more luxury-like flagship that would solidify its return to respectability.

997JET - the AMANTI is a Kia. Not a Mazda. If you're thinking Mazda luxury car, that's the once sold Millenia, which, looks nothing like the XF.

M35MT I can tell you just started looking into cars within the last few years because the guy in the 1st post 997JET (even though wrong about the XF looking Japanese) was right about the LUXURY brand of MAZDA being AMATI. It's european equivalent was actually quite successful in europe until Mazda lost money at home and decided to pull the plug before it's launch in the US.
This is a clip from an article
"In the early 1990s Mazda almost created a luxury marque, Amati, to challenge Acura, Infiniti, and Lexus in North America. In Europe, the equivalent Xedos marque was launched, lasting just a few years. The initial Amati products would have been the Amati 500 (which became the Mazda Millenia), and the Amati 1000 (a new rear wheel drive V12 successor to the Mazda 929). This never happened, leaving the near-luxury Millenia to the Mazda brand".

I predict an S-type situation. The car will be hot for a year or two, then disappear from the radar. In 2 years, there will be a new E-class, new 5-series & a new A6 that will make the XF seem dated. Jaguar tends to not update their cars very often. Look at how they let the X-type & S-type just fade into oblivion. If this is a different type of Jaguar, then they will need to treat it that way.

Also, I did sit in the car awhile back, and while the electronics are certainly entertaining, I would be terrified of Jaguar reliability. And the cockpit does look and feel pretty cheap for what you're paying.

we must be talking about different cars, because ive sat in the XF, and it is at this point and i can say without hesitation best in class. Before one can begin to speak on the poor reliability of a brand include the other cars that you mentioned in that mix as well....the XF is a good car in its class though its not what we are used to seeing from Jaguar(which is the point)the old retro styling it is everything a Jaguar should be and has been in previous years add in competitive, and not a cheap skate interior. In person this car doesnt look like a GS, heck a GS doesnt look like a GS it looks like a mix of other cars in the class, its odd any car that has a round roofline now looks like a Lexus GS??? im confused they didnt even start that roof line on a sedan, and neither has any GS been original so like a lexus GS NO not even close.....but hey some people live blindfolded and by perception alone

I don't care too much about heritage and all that. I like stylish and modern new designs. And i totally love new XF's design (and XK). It's very modern and stylish. Nothing old and retro (retro no doubt prevent designers from totally putting their 100% designs as they have to include the inevitable company tradmarks like grilles, profiles, interiors...etc and compromise their work/design.)

BTW it does look a lot like Lexus GS (my second favourite in the category) but they made it more sleeker and sexy. It's my new favourite.

The 5 series is unfortunate travesty, design wise, for BMW. In trying to push the envelope of car design, they ended up with an avant-garde piece of art that only blind followers of BMW would adore or a piece for people that feel like they need to be told what good design is supposed to look like. I guess that you fit both camps.

this i have to say from reading past post by this poster, enflamed ones mostly supporting cars im confused as to why the sudden hatred of the XF, it looks more stylish than the cars in its class, high grade interior nice drive, yet support such monstrosities as the FX(which for years have had the worse interior in its class along with other infinitis), and the X6....and even other cars that couldnt hold a candle to this car.....the word real Jaguar doesnt make any sense either. the say way that a Bentley Continental, or Bugatti Veyron are REAL British cars i suppose with their VW group sourced running gear and virtually everything else...OR the way Lamborghini is so Italian. This for lack of a better description sounds like a pity party post. Jaguar are bad cars, styling is bland and way to conservative, cheap interiors, and dont last long, but its not a real Jaguar if its not these things????that doesnt make sense. The XK doesnt look like a Jaguar in fact is pretty conservative compared to the original, interior and outside. Yet its a Real Jag??? But hey anything to keep negative perceptions up about anything......

There is, indeed a lot of Jaguar in the XF, but the design elements have been modernized. The hood is a combination of the Mark X (probably my favorite Jaguar in terms of materials execution) and that of the XJ. In fact, if anyone has ever driven an XJ, the hood should look very familiar- as it appears that the inner light bungle is tucked under the exterior grille demarcation line. The interior is just a modernization as well, but with some transposed materials. So, the execution is very Jaguar

Jaguar was very modern about 40 years ago- the XJ was markedly different from the other cars at the time in terms of its proportions. I have a feeling that the next XJ will be nothing short of extreme in its proportions. I admit that there are things on the XF that I do not wish to show upon the XJ- the side window form and that particular rear end. I am not as enamored of the rear as some, and want a modernization (and I don't care if it is extreme)of the drooping rear that has been on the XJ for 40 years- and shades of which have made it onto more than one Bentley.

There is something about it which is not all that Jaguarish on the XF and that is its proportions. There was nothing particularly modern Jaguar about the proportions of the S-type either, but because of its retro elements it was recognizable. Jaguars for the past 40 or so years have been long, low, and wide. That is very difficult to execute in a mid-sized sedan- which is why the S-type was based on a design prior to that time. The design language really works better on larger vehicles.

The Xf may have an overall shape that harkens to Lexus. However you have to look more closely. When you do it is a lot more muscular with more curves and lines in it. I wish they made the front like the concept car's but the current one is not bad.So far it's modern look appeals to a lot of people based on it's current sales. It is obvious that the old retro style of Jaguars was not working on the XJ,the S type,or the X type. Both the X type and S type have horrible rear leg room in them. I know. I sat in them at an auto show last yr.To me that is the biggest flaw they have. They could not carry back seat passengers comfortably.(I'm 5ft 6 1/2). The new XF does not have the best rear leg room but it is for better then these 2 cars. In addition the dash and center consols on the S type and X type were cheap looking, even if they looked retro. The new XF looks modern and avante guard. It has enough unique features to keep drivers interested. Yes this is a different kind of Jaguar and it's one people are going to continue to buy. In addition with Tata Motors behind it Jaguar will be able to make styling updates a lot quicker then previously.

Now, now, let's don't be bitter. No need to hate because the 5 is the benchmark and best-selling in class, outperforming and outselling those boring bubble-shaped jap midsize luxo sedans combined, or because you have to move up to the more expensive, thirstier, and noisier xf-s just to get anywhere near the acceleration you get in a 550.

Really, it's ok; there's a new 5 coming soon with plenty the competition can copy in hopes of at least getting close.

Cheers!

Going fast is not what defines a good car, unless of course you were born conceived and in a trailer. In this respect, besides its trailer-park appeal, (of which it carries a massive amount, just like to Jerry Springer show and WWF) the 5 is an unholy abortion of a vehicle lacking any form of style and taste. But hey, it makes a great tow car!

The XF has a completely new chassis and body structure using 28 different types of steel including boron. The Xf has the stiffest structure in class. Least Jaguar-ish can be a good or bad thing. In a good way: well, Jaguar isn't really notorious for their excellent reliability, so that could be a plus if the XF is reliable. It could also be a bad thing because I think that Jaguars have a classy/elegant look to them that the XF definitely doesn't have. It looks good, but not like the classic Jaguar.

As a former Jag salesman I really wanted to love this car. Jag needed to put the the show car into production, the car that drew people into my office, wanting to put down money on a car they'd seen only in photos. Yes, the XF is selling well now, but all new body styles enjoy a bump in sales. When comparing past sales to current sales, the first question I ask, is, "is this a new body style?" You can't compare those numbers. The XF is nothing new, nothing original, nothing striking. When you're suffering like Jag and you're not the leader in technology, safety or design (and I hate to be cliche) and you have nothing to lose because the company is dead in every way possible, the quickest way to turn that around would be through styling. If you walk into room with the dumbest girl at a party, but she's the prettiest, at a distance no one knows she's dumb, but they all know who's with the prettiest girl in the room. The XF is bloated, it doesn't resemble an Aston, the grille and front is a mess. Yes it has a good starting price and good options. Put the C-XF next to an XF and honestly ask yourself, how much you would more would you pay for that in your driveway.

From an aesthetic standpoint, probably the most important part of the car. Love the lines and back-end but if they don't fix the front, they could be in trouble fast.

Clearly none of you OWN an XF.

I do. It's my third Jaguar.

I've never had people stop and roll their windows down, to inquire about a car, in the middle of a parking lot - until I bought an XF.

I've never had people walk across a parking lot to get a look at my ride - until I bought an XF.

I've test-driven all of the competition - and the XF blows them all away in almost every aspect. It's a great car, and if you have any doubts, go test-drive one. 30 seconds into my first test drive, I was sold. It's a fabulous car on every level.
