When BMW introduced the idea of the SAV (Sport Activity Vehicle) with the original X5, we scoffed appropriately.

Then we drove it and were shocked that the ungainly beast was not ungainly at all. Then BMW took it a bit further and rolled out the X6. It appeared even more useless, yet it, too, was a surprisingly entertaining drive.

BMW didn't stop there, of course, as it rolled out Motorsport versions of both the X5 and the X6 earlier this year. There was no good reason for them to exist, but BMW went ahead and built them anyway. After testing the X6 M, we're glad BMW took the time.

You see, this X6 is so fast that its odd looks, big sticker and pointless existence don't really matter. You simply have to respect it for what it can do. And we're not just talking about going fast in a straight line. It stops and turns amazingly well, too. It's a triumph of engineering over design and marketing. Just take a look at the numbers if you don't believe us.

There is no such thing as warp speed, at least no ones been able to prove it. The same is true when it comes to German cars having soul or that elusive BMW magic. My best guess why people keep saying these ridiculous things is that those people are suffering from what I call the "rookie syndrome". They've never driven any fast cars in their life before. Many years back when the importscene was ruling the streets, these kids that went from a 1.5L automatic civic to an AWD Eclipse GSX were acting and talking as if the Mitsu was doing warp speed. This is of course all in their mind.

I've driven many "supercars", many of which I cannot afford, but I have the luxury of racing with many buddies that can. While I in no way am saying that my M5 is better than a Ferrari 550, F40, Carrera GT, GT3, Gallardo etc as they, depending on the driver, spank me around that evil track @ Englishtown Raceway, I can say that my M5 is the PERFECT blend of everyday drive-ability AND track-ability. Try driving a Carrera GT down 5th Avenue @ 4pm, isn't going to happen. BMW is in no way saying they are better sports cars than those mentioned(to name a few), but they have proved that they are the perfect blend of sport and every-day usability, ask Lexus, Infiniti, Audi, etc. whom try to copy that, ehm. MAGIC.

I implore you to bring a car that is able to hold 2 car seats in the back, drive every day of the year, and beat me around the track, I'll put money on it that you can't. Any time and day my friend, I'll bring the food an extra helmet and pay the track fees if you win.

Sorry America, Kablaam wins "Dumbest post ever" award for obvious reasons.

- Why would anyone want to whoop his azz for food HE brought(it could just be .99c McDonald cheese burgers, or stuff he made with dirty hands)? He's a stranger, the helmet he'd let people use is probably dirty and smelly and I could catch lice and other nasty stuff. Think about it.

- The number one reason no one wants to waste time and gas beating his ultimate compramised machine is that person who win gets NOTHING. Track fee is cheap, and what kind of bragging rights would an enthusiast get from beating a near 4000lb family sedan? What does he take us for, Rookies? Show some respect by racing for pink slips(if he really owns an M5)! If he thinks his car is all that, back it up with some substantial risk, don't be a wussy snob.

Now if Kablamm brought strippers to the track ready to give out lap dances and/or Victoria secret super models to give hugs, take photos and allowed me to spray them with champange(cause I won), I'm there in a heart beat ready to give his BMW a good beatdown. But that's not going to happen, from the way he sounds, I could tell he doesn't wear the pant in his family. Only time he gets to live out his fustrations is behind the wheel of a BMW where he acts like he's so cooler than the kids in their civics.

A little reality check for Kablaam: M5 will not beat an M3, EVO, STI, GT-R, G37 coupe, RX8, CADY CTS-V at the track. All these vehicles offer backseats and only 3 can be truly be driven year round as they are AWD. Unless one lives in non-snow belt states, it's very naive to claim M5 is a great year round vehicle. Plus anyone who can afford an M5 will not subject it to the harshness of snow and salt, if they drive it, they risk looking like they're too poor to afford a winter beater by fish tailing all over the place and putting themselves in danger. If they don't drive it, it's hard to justify forking out a $1500-2000 monthly payment on a car they can only use 6-7 months out of the year. It's a tough delima for people who blew 90K on a sedan instead of a proper sportscar.

M5 or all BMW are too firm as a daily luxury driver yet too soft for track use, it's no good at anything and not bad at anything. That is NOT MAGIC, it's called "the most compramised vehicle". My regular 530IX is pretty firm and bumpsteers all over broken pavements, it's really annoying, yet doesn't handle all that, steering is too firm at low speed, but not firm enough to offer better highway tracking so you don't have to do so much correction. M5 is just a faster version with even harder suspension thing. If anything, M5 is more a 4dr muscle car.

One last thing, Kablaam seems to be a little confused about BMWs competition. AUDI is AWD, Lexus is tuned softer for a luxury ride and never feels harsh like a BMW, and Infiniti is simply too sporty to be confused with a BMW. Each make has their own flavor, they are not copying BMW, not even BMW. With each re-design

BMW really kicked Porsche dead in its ass with the X5 and X6M, you'd pay $91k for a Porsche Cayenne, thats buying you a GTS with ~400hp.

P.S.: I drive the M5 to Manhattan M-F(sometimes Sat), rain, snow, sleet or sun. Wife has an Odyssey and we have a 335i which is up for sale. Unfortunately, sales are down, business is slow, have to cut back :-(

You do know that right? You must be, somewhat, of a car enthusiast - being on this site and all.

Unless I'm crazy, when I shopped for my 335i, I looked at the G35, IS350, the C350(old model sucked, new model is MUCCH nicer), and the Audi A4(again, last model sucked, new model is much nicer).

You can get Audi with fronttrak. At the last, "pursuit to perfection" Lexus event @ Belmont, they openly stated that the 330i was Lexus' target for the IS. The IS spanked the 330i IMO, though, with the new N54, I think that changed dramatically. MB & BMW have been dueling for DECADES.

Truth of the matter on the SRT8 is mid eighty's. The SRT group says its capable of 0.9g but I dont think it was ever done.

12.6 second quarter mile that's impressive! Also 68.6 slalom is almost identical to the S4's they tested yesterday, and this is a SUV.WOW!

Yeah, that really makes sense...NOT!

The X6's sales have already started to fall off a cliff. When you factor in the fact that:

1) the regular X6 looks goofy and has no use

and then realize BMW is trying to sell:

1)A $100K SUV
2)That goes at warp speed
3)That eats more fuel than a Hummer H1
4)That looks even goofier than its regular non-M counterpart
5)That wiill not be used to drag race

you see:

1) Why the BMW brand has never recorded a monthly increase in global sales for 2009

2) The BMW Group is still not profitable for the 2009 year.

BMW, keep producing cars that no one asked for and will therefore not buy so you can claim you have the world's fastest SUV while your sales and profitability continue to stay in the red.

Its the 100K SUV that laps the ring as fast as an M3. And the M3 laps the ring faster then the 100K+ RS6. So the 100K SUV is faster then the 100k+ RS6 avant.

carcar, the $115K Audi mid-engined sports car laps the ring faster than BMW's $100K M-badged SUV...what's your point?

It doesn't matter how fast the X6 M laps the Nurburgring because less than 1% of the car's owners will ever take it to the track.

This is the simply the wrong vehicle for this economic and environmental climate. BMW will pay terribly for a BIG mistake.

The 5-series GT will also fail.

Lets be Honest the car is a great achivement if you see the engineering, and it deserve the recognition...that beast move its butt almost as an sport car and that is realy hard to reach, If not ask to the MB R63. Now we have to face some facts: The last month (sep) MB sold around 1000 cars more that BMW, the new 7 series is behind the S clas for almost 400 cars, (if you exclude the Mini Brand), Second the Sales of the X6 fall 47 percent in just one year, which means that R Class did a better job (and Still selling) in the market. 100,000.00$ buck for car like that, no way most of the people will wait for M5, which is very likely to have the same price tag, or may be less. The resale price will drop as an Startfighter trying to approach to the runway without gas, (like a rock), If you want an SAV, it won't look like a coupe over steroids and will have lot of space for you and whatever you want to take with you. The 5GT and 3GT will have the same destiny....Failure....

CarCar in case you didn't notice: THE RS6 is a SPORTS SEDAN NOT AN SUV

The R8 V10 IS AN ALL-OUT SPORTS CAR.

People want sports-sedans and sports cars that can blast off.

People DO NOT WANT NOR WILL THEY BUY AN SUV THAT ACCELERATES LIKE A SPORTS CAR.

Face it, the X6 M maybe an engineering tour de force, but when looking at its ridiculous price tag, awkward looks, horrid fuel economy, and lack of any concern for environmental correctness, it is destined to fail just like its regular, non-M, X6 counterpart.

X6 sales are down 47% in just one year and the car was just launched last year....BMW's version of success.

really? Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Turbo S, Mercedes ML AMG ring a bell? Both of those cost more than the X5 M, by the way. How about the upcoming Q7 V12 TDI? You're Mr. AudiSuperFan, what do you have to say about that one? Guess Audi is hoping people DO want an SUV that accelerates like a sports car. Was just at BMW dealer pricing one of these out and frankly its super bang for buck when you consider what you are getting, its even cheaper than my M5. Anyhow, they said that all their allocation is sold out and if I want one I have to order it and will not be in till December. For places like Canada this and X5 ///M will be home runs! I don't care what anyone says these trucks-SAVs are going to sell like mad. Look at all the crazy people that own RR Sports or Cayenne Turbos... all the same thing and guaranteed this will add to the bottom line of BMW M division.

GermanNut: You are right but they won't see till they have to "think" to buy, Fuel, resale value, Usability (which is almost useless), At this rate the next year they will be selling less of 100 X6. What most of bimmer fans do not want to face is that the only cool cars in the BMW brand with real "SPORT PERFORMANCE" are the M5 and the M3...I exclude the M6 cause any Sl AMG is better and I do not consider them as sport cars, Just High Performance cars and same goes to the S, CL, AMG class or B7 Alpina. If I have an M3 and I want a High performace Ute, I'll pick a Cayene Turbo, Ml63 or X5M....But X6 never will be in the list. Most of the X6 will be abandoned in the very first months when the buyers decide the car have no enough space is a gasguzzler or they get bored of the uglyness, Great numbers but I am not against the car itself if not against the company, This is not the time for stupidity or trial and error. I want to see the 3 big Germans to survive and I am worry about the last decisions and trend of BMW and the current Status of MB, at least they do not have any bad useless car right (beside the SLS cockroach). Audi at least is doing better than BMW and MB.....I do not want to see just Japanesse, Korean or Chinesse cars...and that scares me...this looks like the forseen future....

I'm sorry but this thing gets comparable fuel economy to the v8 R8, and you are complaining about fuel economy? Considering the performance coming out of an suv it has amazing fuel economy. For example it has 135 more hp, the frontal area of a suv and weighs over 1700lbs heavier.

Also why you consider this car as an sport car if in fact is just an SAV full of nannies, any lady will be able to drive fast on that thing. Real M drivers use to drive hard without gadgets. Even the real M Followers will refuse to drive a car where they can not turns off the nannies. If that is the future of the Ultimate Driving machines.....BMW performance division is death man. That’s true it to bad BMW does not offer a vehicle with this performance and luggage space. Oh wait they do, the X5 M. Nobody buys these to run to the mountains for the weekend the buy them to put 24” wheels on a drive to shop on Rodeo Drive.

Welcome to the new millennium, the goal of the M division is to build the most enjoyable car that any body can drive fast and make it a daily driver.

BMW performance division is death man.

Analyze this that car is a Lexus in some way.

Show my one review, one review where they have said it feels remote, disconnected, or not fun to drive.

Look I don’t get these uber-performing SUV, SAV, or SAC (it’s not a coupe) just read some of my post not only on the X6 but any high performing SUV, but they sell, if they didn’t every one of the car companies you mentioned wouldn’t build them. Let’s face the facts out of all of these pointless machines BMW build the best perform at this time.

If you were able to do Drifting on that, may be, but when you have to many nannies around the car is no longer fun, thats why now MB allows you to turn off all those computers and Bet my arm....you'll be able to do it in the next M5.....and that will be a true Sport Car.. And for the records I am not saying that car does not perform..It is a great engineering development....But even if you do not give the reason....the time will,....this car won't last 5 years in the market, and if it does, it will be as a very low volume car....The wrong car for this time...do not get me wrong....If I want a car 4WD to some offroading X6 could be the right choice...but again, if I want performance and usability, it is at the bottom of the wish list, and finaly, If I want to know who is the best driver I would put you in a C63 just like mine or I would buy and M3 just like yours, Nannies off. Why should I but an X6 if I am in the city or in good roads? in that case I'll take and M5 or E63....Do you know what is the only advantage of an X6 over and M5 in a city? The high point of view and the security (cause a car like that should have a very good structure (hefty weight). and don't tell me that you like the cars with so many NANNIES, that you can not decide, as a driver, what you want to do, You'll be a big liar. Let me reiterate again I don’t get uber-SUVs; they are a waste of performance parts. At these prices buy a sports sedan and a 4runner. As far as electro-nannies on the goofy bastards it’s a reality. If you take a high-performance sedan and jack it up 4 inches of the ground then it should be you need them, its physic. Do I like them? No but in reality 98% of the time it doesn’t matter. As far as the life span of the X6, I could care less. I can tell you BMW makes money on them.

guys it is designed for people like me, that want an SUV, but don't want an SUV. I want the cake and want it for myself. I have driven both the X5 M & the X6 M. They are very different in the mannerisms of the vehicles. The X6 feels like an M6 coupe just sits higher. The X5 M is definitely the family hauler, but since I dont have a family it becomes the perfect choice. What are the other options available? Range Rover Sport Supercharged ( bulky and cumbersome ), Cadillac Escalade ( too bulky and borderline ghetto with all the chrome ), Porsche Cayenne GTS ( not as fast, looks sharp, and almost as much ), Porsche Cayenne Turbo ( not worth $35k more than the X6 ), Infiniti FX50 ( that is the oddest of the bunch in regards to looks, reminds me of a catfish without whiskers ).......... The X6 is perfect for me. This one blows my mind as to the engineering involved to get it to perform at this level. It is truly amazing.

a little about me as to why I like the X6 :: I am 38 & single & successful. I have owned a 535i Sport Package with sport transmission, non-awd. I traded that in for a 2009 135 coupe. Love that little car. Had the opportunity to track it at the Autobahn Club in Joliet on the North track for 25 laps. I have owned a couple of Custom American Ironhorse Choppers, the last one which I kept for 4 years was a 2002 American Ironhorse Slammer. I like unique things, and enjoy engineering by manufacturers when they step outside of the box. It is a risk, some agree & some don't. I like the GT-R, just a vehicle has to look the part as well as perform. That is one thing the GT-R doesnt do. The X6 for me does. I will be picking mine up Next summer, when my lease on my 330 expires.

love it or hate it, you cannot deny it's an engineering marvel. who else could make a 5,000 pounds SUV that out-handles and out-accelerates many significant sport sedans.

personally, i like it. it's unique and looks MUCH better in person than in photos.

Sorry, dhkss, the R8 is supposed to be a rare sports-car that competes with the likes of Porsche's 911 Turbo, Aston Martin Vantage etc. Another words you are not supposed to see that many because they are the flagship of the brand and pretty much halo cars for their design/performance.

The X6 is a soccer-mom SUV that is designed to be seen everywhere. Unfortunately, it looks ugly and serves no purpose, which is also why it has FAILED.
