Mercedes’ major new concept car for the Frankfurt Motor Show is the new F700 design study, a luxurious touring sedan showcasing a raft of new technologies that will eventually make its way to the carmaker’s production models. The most exciting feature is the new DiesOtto powerplant, a four-cylinder petrol engine with the consumption benefits of a diesel. Consumption figures for the 5.18m long concept saloon is an amazing 44.3mpg (5.3L/100km) and this equates to a correspondingly low emissions rating of just 127g of CO2/km.

The engine is mated to a new hybrid starter/generator system and a seven-speed auto, which sees the car accelerate from 0-100km/h in 7.5 seconds.
