Two retired United Auto Workers officials could face prison terms after losing appeals today to overturn their extortion convictions stemming from a 14-year-old strike at the General Motors Co. truck plant in Pontiac.

The U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals today affirmed the convictions of Donny G. Douglas and Jay D. Campbell but sent the case back to federal court in Detroit for resentencing.

An opinion published today said U.S. District Judge Nancy G. Edmunds erred in calculating sentences for the men. The opinion prolongs a case with roots in a different automotive era, when the UAW was allowed to strike the Detroit automaker. In 2009, the UAW agreed not to strike GM or Chrysler Group LLC until September 2015 as a condition of the automakers receiving government bailouts.
