Steve Schmitt Chevrolet Buick GMC - Highland, IL

I took my truck in after contacting the dealership explaining a problem that no one else could give me a definitive diagnosis on. The front end of my 02 Chevy Avalanche wobbled at high speeds after hitting a bump. I figured “who would know Chevy’s better than a Chevy dealer”. My previous experience at Steve Schmitt was good. I contacted the Service Rep on the phone and I explained the problem to him and he said they were familiar with the problem and to bring it in. AT NO TIME did he explain that there would be a service charge for diagnosis. I dropped the truck off on 7/6 and the Service Rep called me on 7/7 explaining to me what I found was a confusing diagnosis. He said his mechanic found that the brake master cylinder was locking up the brakes causing the wobble. He told me if they repaired it, it would fix the problem. But it didn’t make sense to me so I asked a few questions. The Service Rep became frustrated with me and hung up the phone. I tried to regain contact only to find that he went to lunch. So, I took off work early to discuss with him in person. When I arrived, the Service Rep took me back to his mechanic who seemed aggravated that I was questioning him. He had his arms folded and was on the defensive. The mechanic told me the master cylinder needed to be fixed before going any further. The Service Rep told me if I allowed them to fix it, it would fix the wobble problem, he even bet me $20. I disagreed and explained to them both that I had extensive brake work done earlier this year by a local mechanic and if there was a problem in that area, I needed to take it back to him to resolve. That was my decision. The Service Rep then became angry and told me they spent two hours on the diagnosis which I find unlikely since the truck only had 10 additional miles on it. He said I would have to pay a diagnosis charge for the two hours of $150. I told him that he didn’t explain to me beforehand that there would be a charge for looking at my truck, that the charge was unexpected and unfair. He disagreed, was adamant that he told me. I explained the situation to the Service Manager who confronted the Rep behind closed doors from me. I heard the rep tell the manager that I was “jerking him around” and decided to take my truck somewhere else after they diagnosed the problem. I explained to the manager that I am a 23 year Military veteran, I have demonstrated and live by exceptional integrity, I don’t lie. The rep did not explain the charge before hand and I think it’s unfair. The manager didn’t care, insisted on the charge and said, go ahead and take it to your other mechanic and I’ll be happy to compare what he finds to our diagnosis. I have since had the truck repaired by the other mechanic who confirmed that there was nothing wrong with the brake master cylinder. The problem ended up being a combination of the Pitman arm, gear box and tires.
I feel that since I didn’t allow the dealership to perform a repair that I didn’t agree with, they became rude and charged me unfairly. The treatment I received was not what I expected from a dealership. I lost time from work and paid an unfair charge. I can only imagine the experience had I bought the truck there.
