The new cruise control switch is going to be problematic for taller drivers. At one point on the highway, I inadvertently engaged the switch with my left knee without realizing. As I was coming up on traffic, I lifted off the throttle expecting to start coasting, only to realize the car was not slowing down. While this only went on a few seconds, it was enough for me to get a little excited and scramble to turn the thing off. I ended up tapping the brakes since I couldn’t locate the switch right away. As you can see in the photo, it’s in a precarious spot.

My overall impression of the new 3-series is that enough has changed for the better for me to want this car. However, I am going to wait a year, as I expect to see more engine options. And more power is just about the only thing holding me back. The added HP for the 2006 3.0 engine is a nice addition and definitely noticeable over 30MPH, however, I’m still looking for more punch off the line and more pull out of the corners. Over 300HP and more than 250 lb-ft of torque, and the competition might as well pack it in….because as it stands, there’s nothing out there that can touch this all N3W sports-sedan.

FINAL VERDICT: 2006 BMW 3-Series

The good:
Increase in size and power, handling and ride comfort all the while a marginal increase in price. New Nav system and iDrive are easy to use and the screen no longer has problems with polarized sunglasses. Steering wheel is thicker, giving a more assured feel. Sport package is a must have. New 6-Speed Steptronic really closes the gap in performance between it and its manual brethren.

The bad:
Dash quality has gone the way of the cheap plastic look and feel. Push button start is over-engineering at its worst. Non height adjustable seat belts. $45,000, while not a big increase in price is a lot of money for an optioned 3 series. Drive-by wire still has some lag to it, heel toeing near impossible still on the track. I'll still add in a short shift kit. Cupholders are WAY too shallow.

The ugly:
Still warming up to the rear styling.
