In his speech to the Economic Club of Chicago in conjunction with the Chicago Auto Show, Press called for greater cooperation and technology-sharing partnerships among automakers.
"It's clear to me that we in the industry need to make some fundamental changes in our relationships with suppliers, with government, with communities and with one another," Press said. "At Toyota, we've said for years that automakers should compete in the showroom but cooperate in the laboratory. And that need is greater every day."
Sounds great, but I’m not buying a word of Toyota's sincerity, nor are many others in the know.
Toyota is as competitive as any manufacturer gets, as witnessed by its steady march to being No. 1 in the world. Toyota cooperates only when it is to its advantage.
