If you think gasoline prices are high here, in Europe, they're about twice as high.

Because of that, more than half of Europeans buying new cars are choosing diesel engines.

Tonight, we test drive a couple of BMW's that you can't get here in the U.S., but might like to.

Germany is known for its castles and its phenomenal cars, but all European drivers are struggling with very high gas prices.

Something that reads 1.41 Euros per liter translates into about $6.50 per gallon for regular.

Diesel on the other hand, is more than a dollar per gallon cheaper.

The reason diesel fuel is less expensive is that the government taxes it at a lower rate to encourage people to use diesel.

"Usually a diesel engine comes with 25-30 percent better fuel economy than a gasoline engine," said Wieland Bruch of BMW.

BMW loaned us two cars with diesels. First, there was the small 1 Series 120d, with a turbocharged four-cylinder that cranks out 163 horsepower.
It gets about 35 miles per gallon combined city/highway.

While the hatchback design holds tons of luggage, the 1 series will not come to the U.S. before 2008 and likely in a different configuration.

The five door hatch is not exactly the body style that meets the U.S. customer expectations.

The car that does now, in my opinion, is the 535d.
The gasoline version of the 5 series is available in the U.S., but not the twin turbo diesel we tested.
